messi2511.jpg Kolkata: In December 2008, legendary Diego Maradona had set foot in this football-crazy city. Come September 2, another Argentine stalwart Lionel Messi is set to arrive with his national team. If everything goes as per the plan, it will be a double bonanza of sorts for football lovers here, as Argentina will play against either Spain or Portugal in the one-lakh capacity Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The Barcelona star forward who won the Fifa Ballon d'Or award recently is likely to be part of the side that is scheduled to visit the city. "We have signed an agreement for bringing the star-studded Argentine team to Kolkata," an official of a sports management company told PTI. Confirming this, IFA general secretary Utpal Ganguli said, "The Argentina team are scheduled to play an exhibition match either against Spain or Portugal on September 2 here. The IFA is organising the event, however another firm is bringing the Argentina national side". In the recent past, a host of star footballers have come to Kolkata. They include Diego Forlan, Romario, Branco, Lothar Matthaus, Karl Heinz Rumminege, Oliver Kahn, Gerd Mueller, Mark van Bommel and Ze Roberto. I would fly to Kolkata to watch this match!!! India will get to see crazy soccer fans of Kolkata :icflove: ------ Mariyam :hehe: you have NO idea how passionate some of these fans are having never visited Argentina or Brazil and yet die-hard, high five-ing, chest bumping, trash talking, testosterone flaring avid supporters

Portugal is coming to India? :woot:
The combined jealousy of the Portuguese people ( towards the laid back life people in their ex colony Goa lead) caused the great tectonic shift of 2011, and Portugal is well on its way to rejoin Goa. The new state will be called PortuGoa.
Texy, its obvious that the strikingly ( no pun intended) passionate people of Kolkata will root for their own Mara-dada, Pele-da and Cristina-di. After all, these players are as Bengali as Tagore. I have to admit, the stadium that you posted of pics of looks just marvelous. Especially that google earth image. :two_thumbs_up: PS: The guy in the first pic is wearing a jersey with UNICEF as a sponsor? From when did UNICEF start diverting funds from social causes and invest in football teams.
