While, it is extremely tempting to share the celebration of the joy who managed this great feat in 17 days, I can't help but feel skeptical and apprehensive of what is to come. Hoping for the best "82% are in favour stoning of women, 64% want sharia law ( 7% turkey, 16 % Iran ) and 84% favour death penalty for muslims who leave the religion. So, I can't wait to see this delicate situation stablilize."

^^ You posted this in the other Egypt thread too. 82% want to stone women? 50% of Egypt is female. They also want other females stoned? Extreme jealousy? :P Who were the respondents in this survey? All male?

Congratulations to the people of Egypt. They showed the world that peaceful Gandhian protests aka beaceful brotests can loosen the grip of even the most iron fisted dictators.

:hatsoff::hatsoff: to the people of Egypt. But now the real test starts - if the army can manage to have free and impartial elections in September then it will be very good for the country, otherwise there may still be the possibility of the Muslim Brotherhood coming to power :nervous:

Do they even count females there ? However, with the kind of precision brainwashing that is done if some women back stoning for adultery

It is the only organized party left.

Ello der sez Jinnah a.k.a "Qaid-E-Azam" :hello:
Pass my ello to Jinnah. Also tell him that the monocle adds to his overall ugliness. He needs a new fashion designer ASAP. Oh and btw, I don't get your post.

Great news. I hope Muslim brother hood comes into power and burn down the peace treaty with the illegal nation of Israel. They should also force Israel to end the Gaza bloakade or gas supply from Egypt to Israel.

Kudos to the people of Egypt so far. Lets not forget, this is just the beginning of the road to democracy and stability and the journey has just started.

BB, shall we try and stick on Egypt/Middle East and not drag our history into it please ? If you're confident on the future course of Egypt, make your claim and the rest of us shall wait for time to tell us what it is. If the following can coexist on the same square, you should be happy i hope: http://d.yimg.com/a/p/afp/20110211/capt.photo_1297425653763-2-0.jpg?x=400&y=266&q=85&sig=APg0xno_0vBrrk2op6sLMQ-- http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20110211/capt.779f6df7b3d147f692f69bbde2d75bad-779f6df7b3d147f692f69bbde2d75bad-0.jpg?x=400&y=281&q=85&sig=gd5mm1L.okuJ_3Fm562L2A--

broadly translated as ... "lets all indulge in some more mind numbing political correctness" ? :--D And to answer your question : they will continue on their course of becoming yet another Islamic state - if it already isn't - in full spirit.
You can call some of us PC lefties and i can accuse of prejudging, it doesn't really matter. What the reality is that Egypt is on the crossroads and your prediction is one possibility. I do expect some Islamic laws to have prevalence in society; the question is how much of it will be forced upon society. We're talking about the middle east after all. BTW lets not forget, there's more to the country than Islam. The people were protesting for lack of opportunities and not sharia law. Lets commend that shall we :P

Some posters here spend too much time watching Fox News. These brown losers need to realize that they are watching white man's channel and it is generally targeted to white dudes from the red states. Boy , talk about colonial slave mentality. Muslim brotherhood is hardly representative of common man there. Anyways , hope for a free secular democracy to grow in Egypt.

Now I can see theory of "urban India become excessively stupid" at work but it clearly has very little to do with football . In fact, If were you I would not apply for any jobs. To make counter arguments based on smileys devoid stats or atleast some facts as seems to be the case here. If there were no women in that survey then that should ring more alarm bells with most men holding this viewpoint and the only organized alternative at the moment being "Islamic Brotherhood" and as we all know they will always ask women for their opinion. Btw Fox is not ignorant. They are smart and focused with their propoganda. But they do form interesting theories like "Football ruining a nation's economy". 1) Who do you think is most likely to form a govt at the moment ? 2) What seperates Egypt from Iran who also has a similar revolution there ? How are women doing there ?

You never told your source or who were surveyed etc. How representative of the general opinion of Egypt that survey is etc. You kept repeating your opinion on the survey and stating it as a fact. You've put across some random numbers and claim that those are facts. Your comment on Egyptians being hardline is very off mark. So is your comment on Egypt being a place where women are not granted opportunities/opinions. On most human development indices, I think Egypt is ahead of India. Including women related ones. Should we even be pointing fingers at others shouting about inequality, when we are much worse? Here- Infant mortality rates Literacy Have a look at women's literacy rates too. Now you have your facts, tell me what makes you think that Egyptians are an oppressive, misogynist lot?? Maybe you should hold judgment on a country/ people till you know something about them. Have you been to Egypt? Have you studied Egyptian history in college? Have you talked to any Egyptians? What exactly then are the basis of your claims? Many years ago , my parents had gone to Egypt for a holiday. Their general reaction was that the place is just like India. Large poor class, growing middle class. People giving importance to education, rich few controlling a lot of business, lots of mosquitos and over all friendly people. I think I'll take their view on Egypt as the more accurate version of reality that your 'stats & facts' survey whose source you are unwilling to divulge for some reason.
1) Who do you think is most likely to form a govt at the moment ?
I don't know, couldn't reach Mubarak's cell yesterday. Don't know which chamcha he's installed. I think its only fair that if the elections are held in a truly democratic way, and the charter on human rights is held and the Egyptian constitution is not infringed, then we shouldn't complain about who gets into power. .
2) What seperates Egypt from Iran who also has a similar revolution there ? And as we all know, women have flourished there ever since.
Again, I'm no expert and unlike a few on this site, I don't make blanket generalizations on topics I have no clue about. However, you couldn't be more wrong here. Almost every 'expert' on TV says that the revolution in Iran and in Egypt are totally different. For starters, this is a peaceful revolution unlike in Iran.

Firstly, thanks for a decent reply. In the order of bold statements 1 & 2) Go through my post again. I have passed no final judgements/assertions on how Egyptians are ( hardline or otherwise ) or how they will necessarily handle this vacuum. I have merely underlined that while "sharing their joy" I have some apprehension based on above stats as to were thing will go hereon, "hoping" they will not regress. Is that really so hard to grasp ? Btw the stats are from UN agency, so I am guessing it is non partisan. I am more than happy to be proved wrong by Egyptians. It is not me against them. 3)As for the links you presented I am not sure if you get the argument. I am not projecting India as a modernist state by any stretch when I presented those stats neither am I looking at the dynamics of their current society vis a vis India. The argument is that whether the parties which come to power which reframe the constitution or apply Sharia which could very well happen will take the country forward from where Mubarak leaves it. For last 30 years, it has been a dictatorship for all practical purposes, so if you have a people's party what will it stand for what will it represent. India for all its problems still has constitution in place which "does or should protect" the right of every individual. Just to take your line or mode of argument, my entire maternal side was from Egypt and they saw genocides, genital mutilation, communal tensions, rigged elections, oppression of women etc. I ll take their word over your "stats". Do you get my point ? Hope it wasn't too subtle. 4)I am not. It would be pre requisite. And a free and fair election would be great 5)Gist:- "I have no clue. I am no expert, but you couldn't be more wrong here because I listen to experts" Okay. I also listen to experts and I never claimed to be one and neither pass someone else's experience as my argument [wink]. I guess you and I are watching from more or less the same sources. Then maybe you missed those "Experts" who also conveyed that Islamic brotherhood is the only organized opposition whose views are well know or the fact that in this vacuum there is danger of increasing radicalization in Egypt. Sure, it might not exactly be like Iran but instead of being ignorantly blissful, I would rather be hopeful with some apprehension which does not imply that I am not proud of their achievement or that I want them to fail. If this succeeds, then the repercussion on the political situation will be tremendous and great for the entire region except maybe Israel.

Ravi, but why don't you just post the link to the UN survey? Or a reference. The reason I insist, is that then we needn't speculate and can actually make a good guess based on the kind of respondents. Were they all male? Were they all religious? Were they all rural? Were they overwhelmingly illiterate? Were they all retarded aka football fans etc? All this will tell you how seriously you should take the survey and if it represents what the people of Egypt really think. I think that 82% prefer stoning of women is not representative of Egypt. How exactly was the stoning question worded? You've made this thread and a lot of what you predict is based on the numbers you put in that opening post. Shouldn't it be logical that you provide us with a way to check that data and interpret it ourselves? Its like me opening a thread about : "how cool are these names" and saying that 82 % of the people who are named Ravi are extremely ugly and have no sense of humour. 84% of them have a bath once a month and so on. Without citing a source. How fair would that be?

Fair enough. Even I was taken aback by this stat. I saw it on Anderson Cooper on CNN a week or so back. These stats were refuted by one bloke saying that it was manipulated by he regime to create some apprehensions about radicals taking over which is a fair enough argument. I ll see if I can get it. Btw here is another survey, I am not attesting it. 75% of Muslims in Egypt, Pakistan favor stoning people for adultery In a recent poll by the Pew Research Center, this and other areas of Islam in politics were examined. According to the poll, extremist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah received mixed rating from the Muslim public ranging from Jordan showing a slight majority of those polled see the organizing in a favorable light, to Turkey where neither Hamas nor Hezbollah had favorable ratings in double digits and are generally viewed as negative. All the nations in the survey view Al Qaeda negatively with only Nigeria coming close to a favorable majority at 49%. In Lebanon only 3% of those polled view Al Qaeda as favorable. As far as Islam’s role in politics, almost all nations believe the role of Islam in politics is a good thing with Egypt and Indonesia polling at 95% saying Islam should play a large role in politics. 75% of Muslims polled in Egypt and Pakistan favor the following laws in their countries: 1. stoning people who commit adultery, 2. whippings and cutting off of hands for crimes like theft and robbery and 3. the death penalty for those who leave the Muslim religion. Majorities in Jordan and Nigeria also favor such laws. Large majorities in several countries say suicide bombing and other acts of violence against civilian targets in order to defend Islam from its enemies are never justified. The following countries participated in the survey: Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. http://www.examiner.com/offbeat-news-in-national/poll-75-of-muslims-egypt-pakistan-favor-stoning-people-for-adultery
