Make no mistake, Ponting is an ar$e who does many ar$e like things, but you cant be punishing players because they accidentally broke a TV screen in the dressing room. If this is the standard they’re going to conform to going forward, then every member of every winning cricket team who spills even a drop of champagne in locker room as part of a victory celebration should be charged as well. Ponting has no business smashing TV screens in Indian stadiums. The Gujrat State cricket assn should either mend or replace the TV and send the bill to Punter’s address and get it done with. But a charging him under 2.1.2 of the ICC code that covers ''abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match'' is ridiculous and bordering childish. That law was never meant to address instances like these.

Cricketrs are supposed to behave as gentlemen at all times. Imagine if a normal person had done such a thing, he would be in jail for vandalism

According to the report in the above article, he threw his abdominal guard on his kit bag which then bounced off and hit the TV. So, his intent was not to destroy the TV, though one might argue that if you throw something hard you have little idea where it's going to end up. But then I've read at least two more conflicting accounts - one of him smashing the TV with his bat and another of him throwing his gloves on the TV screen. I find the one of smashing the TV preposterous to be honest.

That Ponting acted like a petulant kid and broke TV after getting out? He simply hid the truth by coming up with this lame excuse. I have played enough cricket and seen enough equipment to know that a guard/glove/pad thrown accidentally can't break a TV. If it were a cricket bat, ball or helmet it would be a different story.
The Outsider Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 It sounds likely that an abdominal guard can damage the screen of a TV. I've seen the LCD of my laptop crack when dropped from a mere 4-6 inches. Surely an abdominal guard flung with some frustration would have that much force.

But as per the report the guard bounced off the kit bag and hit the TV. If thrown directly at the TV I can understand some damage being caused but not after it bounces off a bag
ganeshran Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 ICC took a decent decision. There is no point in banning Ponting for this, a reprimand would do good.
gult Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I don't think Ponting is that stupid to smash the TV screen with his bat. He has had enough experience playing international cricket and must have been disappointed so many times. Surely not scoring vs Zimbabwe team in a group stage is not a big disappointment.
