coffee_rules Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 No' date=' he couldn't have. The rule clearly says that in case anything hit more than 2.5 meters from the stumps, the on field umpires' decision [b']has to stand. The actual ruling is: However, in instances where the evidence shows that the ball would have hit the stumps within the demarcated area as set out above but that the point of impact is greater than 250 cm from the stumps and/or that the distance between the point of pitching and point of impact is less than 40cm, the third umpire shall notify the on-field umpire of: a) The distance from the wickets to the point of impact with the batsman b) The approximate distance from point of pitching to point of impact c) Where the ball is predicted to hit the stumps. In such a case, the on-field umpire shall have regard to the normal cricketing principles concerning the level of certainty in making his decision as to whether to change his decision. That means the third umpire can only inform the on-field umpire who in his discretion can change the decision. Tedi Ungal didn't feel like getting corrected with the data available.
asterix Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Aleem Dar, was the spoil sport..He sent back Bell who was walking off. Aleem Dar should be banned from sitting on the sidelines. And if he is stting on the side lines then he should "sit on the side lines" and shouldn't interfere with the on-field events. :hehe:
zen Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 The playing condition goes onto state that: "In such a case the on-field umpire shall have regard to the normal cricketing principles concerning the level of certainty in making his decision as to whether to change his decision." Billy obviously was not big enough to accept his mistake :moil:
achilles Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 The hypocrisy of individuals is always targeted towards India. Had the roles been reversed and had Yuvraj or Virat been in Bell's place, we know how the decision would've gone. FCS, Bell himself thought he was out. But Bowden had to go with the gori chamdi, despite viewing the damn video on the big screen. The video convinced Bell, convinced the Indian team, convinced Strauss, convinced the crowd. But Bowden was busy being matey with the gora chora. The least he can do is apologize. An Indian umpire would've.
Sachin=GOD Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 ICC advises Dhoni to read rules before complaining NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday advised India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to read the rules related to UDRS before questioning the implementation of technology during the matches. Dhoni, who is not in favour of using the Umpire Decision Review System, had yet again posed a question mark over the system following the controversy surrounding Ian Bell's decision in the tied World Cup game with England on Sunday. "Adulteration of technology with human thinking is bad. That's why we didn't get that wicket. Hopefully, next time it will be either technology or human intention," Dhoni had said after the match. ICC General Manager, Dave Richardson, said Dhoni should be aware of the rules before commenting. "There are a set of rules along with the hawkeye to assist in making the decision when UDRS is implemented...Most of the time, a player is not fully aware of all the rules," Richardson said.. "If MS Dhoni is made aware of the specifications of these rules, then I am sure that he will accept the decision that was made," Richardson said. The TV replays had showed that the ball bowled by Yuvraj Singh would have hit stumps but umpires ruled not out even after the review of the call. "If the Hawkeye says it's going to hit the stumps, then there is no reason (why an appeal should be turned down)," Dhoni had said. UDRS is being used in the World Cup for the first time. Link
akshayxyz Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Umpires need to be educated about "2.5m rule" and how to use technology. a) if the accuracy of the system reduces 2.5m onwards, it does not mean that the accuracy goes for complete toss. Benefit of doubt (tech-error), should go in fav of batsman only if the ball is just about within few inches of sides/top/bottom of stumps - or some margin specified by the technology provider. Even in case of some uncertainty from Hawk-eye, there are other technologies - as simple as slow motion from different angles. In case of Bell, simple slo-mo replays were good enough. as someone else already mentioned, what if ball had hit at about 2.45 meters? everything else remaining the same - would they have called out, just because it hit 5cm closer? What about other factors - lets say the ball pitched just outside off stump, there was slight in-swing and hawkeye shows the ball would have struck right edge of off stump - but it struck at 2.6meters - so since the ball did not hit middle stump - would they call not out? even though most likely the tech-error might be predicting it a couple of cms away from middle? once again - its unfair to say that its technology or UDRS fault (unless UDRS enforces use of only certain tech and prohibits taking help of other inputs). The problem is how they are using it. Also - Dhoni does have a point - like in tennis, why cant they completely let technology decide ( in case of challenges).

kabira Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Yes we all know rules...Just that Billy's ego is bigger than the Game.
Zap_Brannigan Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Can ICC or Billy explain what the doubt was in his mind? If i am not mistaken, umpires usually think that the ball might bounce over the stumps if the batsman is well forward. On this occasion, it looked like it was going to hit the a little lower than middle of middle stump. So what exactly was the doubt here?

IMO Dhoni should not have complained. To say that he was not aware of certain rules reflects badly on him. Yes, what happened was unfortunate and was a blunder by the umpire, but these things happen. We need to move on.
Sachinism Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Billy is a tool, he thinks people come to watch his silly antics
achilles Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Geoffery Boycott during the Eng v Ireland match- "Go read the rules. Don't do ads. Go read the rules. Don't make an issue out of it. Sachin facing Afridi... big call... 3 mtrs down. Ruled Not Out. Referred, still not out. Just get on with the game".
king2be98 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 No other country or group of fans make the fuss the Indians do abou the UDRS system. I don't hear any other team, any other board making such a huge ruckus about the UDRS, why can't the Indians just accept it and get on with the game like the rest of the world do.

If we continue to get decisions like that of Ian Bell even after having UDRS then we have every right to complain.

WeStMiDz Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Geoffery Boycott during the Eng v Ireland match- Was David Lloyd. Quite an unnecessary comment I felt.
