Should Raina play instead of Kohli to give a part time bowling option ?

Last I checked the World Cup was being played in the subcontinent. Moreover, since his comeback Raina has also been averaging around the 40 mark with a much better strike rate than Duminy. That should be the number under consideration - recent form - when picking a player than a misleading career average. A straightforward question - do you really believe Duminy is a better ODI batsman than Raina in subcontinent conditions - flat and/or turning tracks? Duminy does not bat in the top 4 either and with Botha, Peterson, and Tahir in the team what bowling option is Duminy providing South Africa?
Let me put it this way - if I were trying to form a franchise (not IPL and thus more focused on Indian players) and both Raina and Duminy were available when my turn came at the draft pick, I would pick Duminy. As for SA bowling, don't think SA will play Tahir, Botha and Peterson against stronger teams. Right now SA are figuring out which are their best spin bowlers and most probably will drop one of the three - most probably Peterson. Even if they don't there can never be too many bowling options and an additional bowler to go to always comes in handy and Duminy does have a knack of picking wickets.

Is this franchise going to be playing in India and the subcontinent? If yes, then I would say you would have made the wrong choice. Duminy has been exposed against spinners time and again on turning tracks and on flat pitches Raina is a brute. On both kinds of tracks to be expected in the subcontinent Raina outscores Duminy by a fair bit.

When a team already has 2-3 front line spin bowling options, the part time spinner will be seldom used. You can follow the World Cup and see for yourself how many overs Duminy will end up bowling or how effective he will be on these tracks.

Forget Duminy for the time being. I am sure Raina is better than Faf Du Plesis and can easily replace him in the SA top 6 (Smith, Amla, Kallis, ABDV, Duminy and Raina). :--D In Australia he can replace David Hussey/White, in Sri Lanka Chamara Silva, in England Collingwood, in Pakistan everyone, in NZ everyone. Raina can play in the top order of all other top sides.

I think he will get a free reign this world cup. No point in moving away from him now after investing so much of time and effort in him. I don't see Yuvraj being dropped' date=' unless he's injured, during the world cup.[/quote'] Gosh ! I didn't realize India's whole WC campaign was depending entirely on Yuvraj.... to the extent that India would rather lose the WC than drop Yuvraj:omg: Actually, I agree with your last statement...... that the only way Dhoni would drop him is if he gets injured ! Well, let's hope that the other 10 players perform well enough to win the WC ; I suppose we can afford to carry a little extra baggage !

Wonder what you are talking about. The guy in his last innings scored 58 off 50 balls and you call him a baggage!! I am speechless.

Let us quit the topic of whether Raina can walk into other teams. In my view. you bet he can. But that is not the problem. Should Raina be selected in place of Kohli because of Raina's supposed "bowling prowess". The answer is a resounding No.

Raina and Kohli should not be compared - both play different roles at different positions. coming back, if Raina should be part of the XI atm, its a resounding yes from me. He is our best No.6 and he should play. If it means dropping anyone out of Kohli or Yusuf, so be it. Raina merits his selection as a pure batsman, his bowling is a bonus

Quite a good headache to have for any team.
Wish we have such headaches in our fast bowling department :cantstop: We are waiting on Nehra to recover and he is still in the dressing room carrying an injury.

What sort of thread is this ? Some here expect Raina's bowling to save the day when all the other bowlers struggle just because he provides 'variety' with his pause :wall:

Kohli = Sachin (of new era) Raina = Sehwag --- I know that there is no comparison between the newbies and the legends as they are in a whole different league but just for instance you had to chose between Sachin and Sehwag for only one spot to spare...:haha: It's a good headache to have

we have the same headache in bowling too - its just that in batting all options are really good while in bowling all options are really bad :haha:

I think we should forget the argument on who is better, Virat or Suresh and concentrate on getting a good decent bowling attack. Also i had a question is Virat Kohli on facebook? There are two profiles under his name, does anyone know which one is genuine . . . . .. . . Thanks Hkbanz...
