cowboysfan Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/cricket-world-cup-2011/news/Australia-or-Sri-Lanka-Team-India-in-catch-22-situation/articleshow/7745736.cms NEW DELHI: Pakistan and South Africa's convincing wins over Australia and Bangladesh respectively have put India in a catch-22 situation ahead of their last league game against West Indies. Simply put, a win over the Windies on Sunday will take India to the second spot in Group B, leaving them with the daunting task of having to face Australia in their quarterfinal match in Ahmedabad on March 24, a situation they would like to avoid. If they lose on Sunday, they will have to face Sri Lanka instead. Which one will be an easier opponent in their quest for a semifinal slot? The Indians would probably have been happier meeting either New Zealand or Pakistan at home. If India beat WI, they finish second and so face Australia who are third in Group A. If WI beat India for the second spot, they will face Group A runners-up Sri Lanka. West Indies also face a similar dilemma: Who will be easier quarterfinal opponents, Pakistan or Sri Lanka? ------------------------------------------------------------ This is not a catch-22 situation.I hate it when people use this phrase without knowing its true meaning. These 2 teams are the worst opponents we can have in a QF.
Midfielder Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 rest all the players and go for SL. I think easiest would be Pakistan. You dont want to face AUS with one loss.
Zelig Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Based on current form, I'd take Australia over SL. If WI beat India for the second spot' date= they will face Group A runners-up Sri Lanka. West Indies also face a similar dilemma: Who will be easier quarterfinal opponents, Pakistan or Sri Lanka? TOI
sharma Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 i reckon you need to beat 3 teams right from the beginning aus pak/sl sa to win the world cup, you must beat these 3 else you cant win, changing the order of who you beat first and who last is not going to help does not really matter if you lose in the final or in quarters, its a loss either way
punjabi_khota Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Based on current form, I'd take Australia over SL. TOI  By 'they', TOI means India. Read the previous sentence. :giggle:
Asim Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 i reckon you need to beat 3 teams right from the beginning aus pak/sl sa to win the world cup, you must beat these 3 else you cant win, changing the order of who you beat first and who last is not going to help does not really matter if you lose in the final or in quarters, its a loss either way so no difference being in TOP2 vs TOP8 right?
Zelig Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 By 'they'' date=' TOI means India. Read the previous sentence. :giggle:[/quote'] But the following sentence is misleading: "West Indies also face a similar dilemma: Who will be easier quarterfinal opponents, Pakistan or Sri Lanka?" India will face either Australia/SL | WI: Pakistan/Australia. It's not between Pakistan/SL for both the teams. :dontknow:
The Outsider Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I see this as a pretty good draw for India. Australia in the Quarters at Ahmedabad, Pakistan/West Indies at Mohali in the Semis, and likely Sri Lanka/South Africa at Bombay in the Final. All three matches in which India would have a more than 50% chance of winning. Alternatives like Australia/South Africa at Mohali, Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad would have been much tougher games.
The Outsider Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Pak/WI in Mirpur innit? Yeah, I meant India's likely opponents and venues if they are to move ahead.
Jersey #10 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Beat OZ in the quarters as it's better we get rid of them early in the tournament.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I hope the Ahmedabad pitch takes turn as I really can't see Aussies getting the better of us on a turning pitch. If India beats WI I really do pray that the pitch curator/groundsman in Ahmedabad starts shaving all the grass and stop watering the pitch resulting in a dry wkt that should take turn Now if India loses to WI I say let's go with the flat pitch as a spin friendly pitch will suit SL better than us. But if we get Aussies on a turner in Ahmedabad I see us going all the way as WI/Pak in Mohali should suit us just fine.

rkt.india Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Mohali match will depend on toss because of heavy due factor

Jinxed !!!!  If India beat WI today India play Australia in Mirpur & not Ahmedabad which is a slow & low Pitch & quite a big turner aswell. By this If India beat AUS in QF they play SF agains winner of PAK V WI game at Colombo & not Mohali.

Sri Lanka will play in Sri Lanka unless they play India and Bangladesh will play in Bangladesh unless they are playing either Sri Lanka or India.
