I for one has never been convinced with Anna and felt him to be a bit dodgy character. Normally a patriotic Indian who is really interested about the nation would instantly ring my inner chords but even after all the hype Anna never ever make me feel that he is that genuine.

Just because I posted that, does not mean I endorse it fully. Its always good to see both sides of the coin w/o being judgmental. And that is how I am - I always like to see different sides of same argument. This comment has an interesting point - what is the guarantee of the integrity of the additional layer?

So he doesn't want random regional parties crashing into Maharashtra state politics and that he wants to express his unhappiness about that without resorting to violence. Don't see any problem with that. National level corruption needs any voice and if he had kept his protests just to Maharashtra it is the rest of the country which would have been left out. Not sure why the biatching when you got someone who is helping us with this monster called corruption.
++ i second that..

A comment from one of my colleagues: Exactly what the Lok Pal bill is doing is to add layers of Government to watch others in Government. We need less Government, not more. What is required is a simplified Government with lesser discretionary powers, not Lok Pal.
Not 100% correct. The Jan Lokpal committee will comprise of various public servants : Rajya Sabha MPs + ret. supreme court judges + select few from the LS etc. Like the election commission, this too will ( at least on paper) be an independent body. In fact, the initial Lokpal bill drafted by the govt had provisions for more MPs in the Lokpal commission than what was mentioned in the draft Jan Lokpal. That was a point of friction between Anna Hazare and the govt.

The point is that in India, anyone is free to go to any state (except J&K) and do pretty much whatever they want. His attitude reeks of double standards. The political parties he referred to can also claim to be doing work of national importance, so what he is doing in Delhi is moot. He is in Delhi, which is not his state, and he could have very well protested in Mumbai :dontknow:, going by his logic.

^ of course it is better than original proposal, but not full proof. Anyway I am not against it, just that - when it comes to death threats ( to self/family) majority (not all) of people break down - thats how it works in real world.

Normally I can know a person in a few glances and by listening to a few of his words. That instinct of mine has been quite accurate till now ever since my childhood and hardly does it go wrong. I was just referring to that inner instinct of judgment by listening to a person. His speeches did not reverberate inside me as a genuine person though I gave him some benefit of doubt. Comparing him to Gandhiji is ridiculous to say the least and that was just a media movement rather than a mass movement though for a fair enough cause. Gandhiji would have never hogged media limelight 24/7 like he did.

I think Mumbai should be made an union territory as it belongs to the whole nation. People from all over have made it what Mumbai is today :nice: For Lokpal bill to help reduce the corruption, we need geniune and clean ppl in the committee because if we get corrupt people into Lokpal committee, they will only ask for their share from the poiliticans and thereby increase the corruption :P

Isnt corruption a nationwide issue? Hazare might not be a saint.. but if he is 80% type saint then i would back him against bunch of out and out chors..

People have to say such things to be politically correct in a given situation. For example, When your support base consists predominantly of marathis, as in this case !

Normally a patriotic Indian who is really interested about the nation would instantly ring my inner chords but even after all the hype Anna never ever make me feel that he is that genuine. I support his campaign overall but I always felt him to be a dodgy character. The first comparison to Gandhiji by the so called intellectuals was ridiculous. Gandhiji would never take the whole media and hog national limelight with all cameras focused on him. His movement was more like a media movement than the mass movement which it was mentioned as. I still doubt he is genuine and feel that he is more interested in some limelight rather than a Gandhian movement. If he is not ready to accept North Indians as part of Maharastra as mentioned in the above post then I have every reason to doubt his patriotic chords. He should not be sitting in North India and hogging limelight if he feels Indians are not one.
That is a superb piece of character assassination there. How well do you know Anna Hazare apart from random clips you've seen on the TV? How well do you know Gandhi apart from what you've seen on tv/movie clips or books? I am not claiming to know him either.. but what you have said is quite ridiculous to be honest. Anna Hazare has done more for others in one lifetime than most can ever do so. Also I am not sure which part of his speech says that he doesn't want non-Maharastrians to be part of Maharastra. From what I read in the article, he doesn't approve of people from UP coming to Maharastra and having a political rally based on UP people's power ... I can fully understand his sentiments.

You are comparing Anna to Gandhiji. :hatsoff: NB: I am not character assassinating Anna but he is too controversial and tries to hog media limelight for a genuine person. I also do not like Arundhati Roy, Medha Patkar, Mallika Sarabhai and all those so called elite social workers who hog media limelight all the time. I personally never felt them to be genuine and nor do I feel Anna to be genuine social thinkers. His movement has always been a media movement and I still stay by my words. However, I support the Jan Lokpal Bill for sure but not a media-savvy limelight hogger like Anna Hazare.

Where did I say Anna is like Gandhi? I admire the guy for what he has done for others in his life. From what he has achieved so far he seems to be a genuine person. What about him do you feel is controversial? It is not his fault that the movement has grabbed the media headlines. However, I am glad that it has to be honest. Most people were too busy bleeding blue before that. How many people have genuinely heard about the guy before this? What makes you say he is a limelight hogger?

You support the bill, but not the guy who was instrumental in forcing the govt to adopt the bill. :winky: What is media-savvy about his efforts to get the bill (which you support) pass? If media exposure adds pressure on the govt to get the bill moving, what's wrong in using the media to push it?

I am not against the bill as I said earlier too but this character Anna is using this as a tool for hogging media limelight it seems. His movement itself was a media movement and nothing else. Whom did you see supporting him? Were there any representation from the bulk of India which is poor and resides in villages? I would have to say NO. The people who supported him were the so called elite class who were doing a few candle-lit processions, so called "hunger-strike" and some rock concerts at the support venues. Not to mention that the media were focusing on them 24/7 in Peepli Live style. All the support he got got was driven by media rather than genuine support. It was a media movement with him being used a stooge and nothing else and he was making as many statement as possible every few hours to remain in the media spotlight. The movement was no way effective without media and the supporters too were hardly from all over India to be called a "mass movement". Similar campaigns I remember was the "Pink Chaddi Campaign" which was also a "media movement" rather than a people movement as it was projected to be. I was not against these campaigns and it is fun for a good enough cause but to call them "mass movement" instead of "media movement" and to compare them with Gandhian movement is just ridiculous. Gandhian movements are where every villages in every remote part of India comes out to support and not a bunch of educated elite going on fast or burning a few candles. Calling such media movements Gandhian movements is an insult to the Indian Freedom Movement taken by Gandhiji and the works of Gandhiji. I support the Jan Lokpal Bill but this movement was a media movement and Anna Hazare is a limelight hogger IMO. He is too media-savvy and makes too many statements for the media which is quite unlike Gandhiji.

It was a very successful movement and achieved quite a lot in a very short time span, ofcourse with the help of Media. People from all over India supported Hazare's cause and protested in small groups in their own cities and towns, in whatever way possible. In all these hoopola of WC2011 and IPL, the guy managed to get his way out from a traditionally adamant government like UPA. It took 4 months of Parliament boycott by opposition to get the JPC probe going and getting Raja booked for 2G scam. Still people like Kalmadi are roaming free. The less we say about super corrupt Pawar, the better. The day he dies, will be a great day for India and will be bit corruption free (now Pawar is reduced to giving clarifications about the latest Radia revelations). Anna Hazare has survived 2 unsuccessful assasination attempts on him. And you say he is Media hogger? Then what are your views about present politicians like Digvijay Singh etc.?

And calling Anna Hazare as a media savvy elite social activist? Seriously? Wonder how much you know about him. In fact Anna hasn't got the recognition he deserves. As for rural folks fasting and joining him, if ever you seriously watched the media coverage, at least 90% of the people at Jantar Mantar for the first 2-3 days of the protest were from rural areas!! read some of the local dailies from across India to get a sense of what was going on in different parts of India related to this protest. The elite joined in only after it gathered storm. And in case you did not know, there were concurrent protests and fasts in nearly every city of India. if that for you isn't a mass movement, please define a mass movement. Anna Hazare or none of his supporters have ever compared him with Gandhiji. But he is a "Gandhian", I hope you can differentiate between the two. I wouldn't even get into the details of this movement as you have got absolutely no idea about how it started and what the team have been doing so far before they decided to sit on this protest in Delhi.
