1983-2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 An Indian summary Which countries match the GDP and population of India's states and territories? How big is Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state? One way of answering the question is to take its total area: 95,000 square miles (246,000 sq km). Another way is to think of it as a country. If Uttar Pradesh were to declare independence, it would be the world’s fifth most populous country (as the map below shows, it has about the same number of residents as Brazil). Yet its economy would only be the size of Qatar, a tiny oil-rich state of fewer than 2m people. That makes it poor on a per person basis. Despite India’s two decades of rapid growth, Uttar Pradesh’s GDP per head is close to that of Kenya. The map below presents country equivalents for India’s states and territories in terms of GDP, GDP per person (in PPP terms) and population. Please play around with it and tell us what you think. http://www.economist.com/content/indian-summary

akshayxyz Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 If Uttar Pradesh was a country, Noida would be the capital :woot: And no S=G, the capital wont be lucknow :beee: No chance for Noida - until we have Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad. Noida has some identity crisis issues.. some like to associate it with Delhi, but Delhi people would reject it as it has more UP touch ( and politically also is part of UP). Whereas the above three are pure unadulterated UP cities. For the moment lets imagine we have nations defined at current state boundaries, why would you want to keep your capital on the border sharing with most powerful state (Delhi) in the neighborhood!
1983-2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 imagine if all the states were to have their own independence. Maharastra would be like Singapore in terms of GDP, Sri Lanka in terms of GDP Per Person and Mexico n terms of Population. Maharastra = Singapore + Sri Lanka + Mexico :hysterical:
Sidhoni Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Such economically poor countries in GDP per person section. :((

zen Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Ecomomy wise, I am not surprised to see Indian states being closer to countries in Africa than in Europe .... and in terms of cleanliness, I won't be surprised if African countries do a better job One could tell by the amount of dirt and garbage on the street as to how much people care for their country. If one has the senses to clean his house, then why throw that garbage on the streets .... And it puts me off when I see temples (place of worship) dirty
nikred Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 So much hate against Noida :headshake: I don't hate Noida.....I just don't care. :icflove:
