In his first test he didn't really give any evidence that he was weak against short stuffs. Where he probably missed the plot is he didn't practice enough like Tendulkar or Dravid. I heard during 2001 series he hardly spent time at the nets. To be honest he could have achieved a lot more if he had paid little attention to his batting. He became mentally fragile and timid. for a period of time.

Dada had scored 7.5k runs!!! And VK, right now is struggling in WI. YEs he's has had a good start in one-dayers but, he has to prove himself in tests. And he's nowhere in the league of all the big guns you guys named.

A captain's role is never to discover new talent,this is probably applicable to a retarded cricket system like Pak where their 'great leader' spots talent in gullys.The captains role definetely though is to back and give confidence to young talent or to players not performing to their potential . Did Indian cricket system change suddenly change in a span of 6 years that we started getting mercurial talent all of a sudden?Laxman debuted in late 96,tell me how long and under who's captaincy did he become a regular member?Wasn't Dravid's usefulness in ODI's questioned in the 90's?wasn't Dravid's part-time keeping days his most unchallenged position in the ODI side ever?
