Vijay.Sharma Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 ...not more than 60K. My current one is HP Pavilion dv4 with 4gig, 14 inch, 320gig, Intel Core 2 duo. Got it about 1.5 yrs back for around 46k. I am looking at buying a new one (need to give this to me bro). I like smaller displays - 12/13 would be ideal but wouldn't mind a 14. And other stuff to be better than the current one. Please Help!!! What's the deal with chips like AMD? Is the quality between AMD and Intel so hugely different that AMD's go at such low rates?

OTOH,if you are using it for heavy duty client side work apps ,I'd recommend a PC.
zen Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I don't know abt the cost in India but you can get decent 13"/14" laptops from most manufacturers for e.g. Lenevo (T-series), Sony (C or S or Z[Z is expensive]), etc. Anything less than 13" may not be comfortable enough for viewing unless you plan to connect it to an external monitor and anything more than 14" may not be great for moving around with.

I think I bought a larger RAM (4Gig) when I bought this comp 1.5 yrs back. At that time we were getting lotsa 1 and 2 Gigs but I looked for 4 Gigs. I was hoping to find 8Gigs when I was doing some web search last night but not many of them come with an 8Gig as standard. Rett, I am kinda used to smaller screens. Before the current one which is 14" I had a Sony Vaio which was 13.3". I prefer smaller displays...max about 14 or if it is really an excellent deal then I can consider a 15". Problem is the 11 - 13" lappies seem to be catering to "executives" and hence they come with less memory. I dont mind a smaller hard disk because I can buy an external one but RAM should be 4Gigs already present in the system and upgradable. PK, I was checking out the MACbooks last night on the web....man they are awesome! But again the same problem of RAM and they are a little too costly. Question about the Ipads - when they say "storage" does it mean something like RAM or like hard disk? Basically, can they be used as proper computers? The kinda applications I normally use are Minitab (stat software), the typical MS Office, Visio, Project, Imaging apps like Picasa and the one I got with the Lumix camera, there is also a guitar tablature software and a music maker, Cakewalk. The latter ones need decent amount of RAM. Also, the price difference between MAC and the others is in the order of about 20K. Is it really worth that difference. I ask this because my previous comp was a Sony VAIO which was about 10K more than Dell, HP, etc but I still bought it because of the brand and thought it would be worth it. But that comp would heat up so bad....the battery became useless within a year. So a little cautious. Guys, would a Netbook allow you to do all the complex stuff and run all those memory consuming applications (let's assume I attach an external hard disk)? Also, is there a huge difference between Intel i3, i5, and i7? My current one has Core 2 Duo Thanks in advance for your inputs
Holysmoke Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 No netbook. Go for atleast i5 or i7. I'd recommend the 13 inch macbook pro. Macs are a different species, build wise. Not comparable to any of the windows machines. And the OS is the cherry on top. Just make sure the apps/programs u use are available on the mac/there are good alternatives.
