rkt.india Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 First class matches 59, wickets 250, average 20.64, strike rate 46. runs scored 2455, average 27.58, best 139, 5 centuries, 9 half centuries. List A matches 61, wickets 91, average 24.58. Really, if you look at these stats alone, any player would proud to have these stats. These stats show how well he has done in First class cricket with both bat and ball and establish Joginder Sharma as one of the best alrounder Indian have ever produced and still what opportunities he got 4 ODIs and 4 T20s. These are not enough opportunities to measure his talent. His best record is in first class cricket where he has taken wickets at 20 runs per wicket and he must be given his due chances in test cricket for India. For a guy who can move the ball both ways and also can bowl at a deceptively good speed for Indian standards around 125K and can rattle the batsmen with bouncers and inswinging yorkers like he did in T20 WC to Brett Lee, he should by now have played quite a few tests for India. He took 6 wickets in the last Devdhar Trophy final against West Zone and out-bowled Ishant Sharma who is now playing test for India against England. There are quite a few instances where his talent has been overlooked for others even when he out-bowled or out-batted those guys who are picked ahead of him and who can forget his spells in 2007 T20 WC. His last over against Australia and against Pakistan which propelled India to championship win. It has been long that our selectors have not been giving importance to first class cricket for Indian selections. Likes of Irfan Pathan and RP Singh were selected straight after U19 WC in 2002 and 2004 and played tests for India and look at where they are now. Ishant was picked only after 7 FC game in his career at the age of 18 even when Joginder was out-bowling him at FC level. So selectors must look at who has performed well at First Class cricket because this gives the right idea of a players ability. We must ensure that we do not waste talented players like Joginder Sharma. If he has done so well at First Class cricket, he is capable of repleting it even in test cricket. Joginder Sharma is just one example of selectors ignorance to real performers at FC cricket. Likes of Gagandeep Singh, Ranadeb Bose, and Shib Shanakar Paul who all are FC legends and were great bowlers in their times never picked for test cricket and they all too could bowl at a heavy pace of 125K. There is one example of Doddanarasiah Ganesh who even after taking 365 wickets at first Class level could only play 4 tests for India. He should have been given more chances to prove himself when we have given so many chances to bowlers like Sreesanth who averages 35 in first class cricket, what special Sreesanth has done at international level except just a few fifers and rubbish bowling on this England tour, while Ganesh had plenty of fifers at FC. Remember Debashish Mohanty, a tall fast bowler from Orissa, who could only play 2 tests for India despite taking 417 FC wickets. This is just sheer ignorance from selectors behalf to these guys who have served Indian First Class cricket so well. So I seriously request selectors now to please look at the performance and stats at first class cricket before selecting a player, does not matter how talented one player is like in case of Ishant and Sreesanth, if he has not played enough first class cricket or done well at first class cricket, how he is going to do well at test cricket.

This way Yuvraj,Sachin, would not have been selected, and this way Varun, Umesh would not be selected. I disagree, talent can be spotted and fast tracked, it's upto the administration to groom, nurture a talent, by giving them enough FC matches when they are not reperesenting national setup. The indian players these days are full of attitude, getting millions of $, who would want to put in the hard yards, take out time to improve their flaws, but in other countries where prestige, value of playing for your country is above the Money, the returns are different. Who would have give Stuart Broad any chance after he was slaughtered for 6 sixes. But now a world beater. It's because of the Selectors/Coaching Staff/Administration player excels, playing first class, can make a player first class, but not international class. Same with Mohammad Amir, malinga, mendis. Idea is to spot an real potential and provide them with all the support to grow and sustain in the International Arena. Indians like RP, Munaf, Irfan who have been propelled into International scene, did have their moments very early in their careers, and they looked to be world beaters themselves, is some sense, but it's the constant grooming, nurturing, of the player which lacks in Indian Cricket, and the aftereffect is that the talent dies.

Hell Raiser Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Indian selectors are the worst in the world. Jogi should have played atleast 75 tests by now. He would have been better than the so called Best all rounder ever Gary sobers.

Hell Raiser Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 That is what I want to say as well.:two_thumbs_up::icflove: Yes, who need Yadav and Aaron when we have player like Jogi waiting in the wings. He along with Vinay Kumar( another super hero in Indian domestic cricket) will make a lethal combo. Deadly is the word that comes to mind.

He would have been better than the so called Best all rounder ever Gary sobers. :hysterical::hysterical: yeah right, if he were there, india would have won matches by playing only 10 players, because he fills the place for two. India could rest a player and not play him at all. Jogi would have done it all, as his stats say....

Deadly is the word that comes to mind.[/quote'] Absolutely, jogi opening the bowling, i'm already wondering how the batsman would piss in their pants, seeing him run as he did in the World Cup. The way he scared the hell out of aussies, says it all, and his intimidating body language in the final against Pakistan left them shivering till the presentation, also his awesome, blastsome, performances in IPL, which has left me flabergasted, only relates to the stats he has. india has missed a Rare quality talent which can only be seen in India, and comes at the rate of 1 in a century.

Sooda Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I am struggling to tell whether this is epic sarcasm :hmmm: Anyway I kind of agree with it. Not with the specifics of Jogi playing test cricket-, but certainly the principle that more of the domestic FC performers given a shot. I do not think it is coincidence that guys plucked from the U19s burn out after a good start, they do not know their bodies or bowling techyniques very well and test matches is no place to learn. I have posted this a few times elsewhere. Guys like Gagandeep should at least have been givena s shot. Obviously a bit oif judgement goes with it from the selectors, but its not like our current crop of pacemen are setting the world alight.

You understood it well, though I tell you Gagandeep was selected when Ganguly was the captain but team management did not find him impressive and he was never selected again. FC performances in India do not show you the right picture.
