England's plans against SRT

The ploy to draw tendulkar outside his off-stump was the result of a computer simulator plan, created by team analyst Nathan Leamon London: A mathametician's plan and modern technology have helped England keep Sachin Tendulkar's bat quiet in the ongoing Test series against the Indian cricket team, a reports here claimed. England has relied on drawing Tendulkar outside his offstump in the early part of his innings rather than let him get his runs on the onside and this ploy is the result of a computer simulator plan, created by team analyst Nathan Leamon. "We feed into the simulator information about pitches and the 22 players who might play, and it plays the game a number of times and tells us likely outcomes." Leamon was quoted as saying in a British newspaper. England believe Tendulkar largely gets his runs on the onside until he has made 50 and they have denied him the advantage completely. Of the 261 balls bowled to Tendulkar by England's fast bowlers till the Edgbaston Test, 254 have pitched outside his off-stump, six have been in the line of the stump and just one beyond leg-stump. Tendulkar, world's greatest run-maker ever and on the cusp of his 100th international hundred, has so far got 34,12, 16, 56, 1, 40 and 23 from seven innings for a combined total of 182 from the series at an average of 26.00. England took mathematician's help to trouble Sachin Leamon, nicknamed "Numbers" by England players, breaks down the target area of the pitch into 20 blocks, each 100cm x15cm, in his software and bowlers begin to get a better idea of where to aim against a particular opponent. According to an insider in the Indian team, Tendulkar did work out what England were doing to him by the time the third Test match was played at Edgbaston. Tendulkar realised that he was being made to reach out to deliveries, that the strokes he was attempting were going on the left of the cover fielder?an indication that he was playing beyond his body. He was getting out to catches in the slip cordon as well as leg before because his head was falling outside the line of off-stump. In order to counter this tactics, England took a middle and leg stump guard in the second innings of the Edgbaston Test and stood outside his crease. He thus became surer of his off-stump and his off-side strokes were now going to the right of the cover fielder. England then tried to desist Tendulkar from following his change in batting tactics and Matt Prior immediately came up to the stumps to James Anderson to force the little master back into his crease. Leamon, 39, was recruited by Flower shortly after he became England's coach in 2009. He is also a qualified cricket coach. http://sports.in.msn.com/cricket/ind-eng/article.aspx?cp-documentid=5381480&page=2

This is the kind of shiznitz we should be doing. Richest board in the world but the thinking is just not there.
most of that money goes into the pockets of the guys running BCCI. But ya wow....england really prepared well for this series.

BCCI is busy creating injury 'database' along with Infosys.. :haha::haha: The list is too big too handle for BCCI babus

That "shiznitz" needs disciplined "executers" of the plan. The kind of dipsheets we have as our bowlers, some of the best plans can go down the gutter.. On top of that we have been dropping catches in the close in like never before.. And on top of everything you need a smart captain and not an ultra-defencive passive captain..

This is typical analysis that goes in before any series. I know that our team used it to look at all the past dismissals of their opponents along with their favorite scoring areas. There's already an analyst with the team who helps them with such an analysis and hands them their own stats from previous innings so that they could work on their weaknesses and focus on their strengths. In fact I heard and read about it as far back as 2003-04 when India toured Aus under Ganguly.

Even the FC teams in India have these video analysts. Plus, hardly anything new about pitching outside the off to Sachin early on...It's more about the implementation by the bowlers that is the key :dontknow:

There is a difference between an analyst and a freaking simulator.

Over the last few years everyone has seen Tendulkar favoring the leg side. In fact that's why get gets LBW or bowled more often as he tends to fall over and plays more across these days. Nothing new there. Hell, making plans are easy - I can do so which will work for almost all batsmen, i.e. bowl in the channel just outside off on a good length with the ball hitting top of off. And occasionally bring the ball in, or take it away with an occasional bouncer thrown in. But it's implementation that's tough as hitting that good length continuously is not as easy as it seems. Just ask Sreesanth and other Indian bowlers :--D

Not much. Analyst makes use of simulation or uses a simulator. The analyst I was talking about used a simulator along with data from previous matches and series. Plus there's no consistent way of simulating a human opponent especially high quality batsmen like Dravid and Tendulkar. E.g., remember Tendulkar's 241 in Sydney. He simply left everything outside off to make bowlers bowl to his strength. No simulation can predict that. Also, do you think they didn't try the same thing with Dravid? After all they claim they value Dravid's wkt more than Tendulkar's. Why didn't this "simulation" work in case of Dravid? The simple truth is that this has been a horrid series for our batsmen and the batsmen are simply out of touch which makes all these fancy theories sound like some sort of futuristic science.

++ nothing special about the mathematical analysis mentioned in OP.

you have to give credit to ingerlund. their preparation for a series is meticulous. no stone left un turned. they deserve all the success they are getting right now. good team, supported by a terrific backroom staff.

Correction ** "good team up against an disinterested unit" Dravid has shown if we had been up for the series we would have made a series of it. Hell when we didn't even play 11 fit players in any match what do you expect? We carried Zaheer in the 1st Test, Harbhajan in the 2nd thus going in with 3 bowlers effectively. in the 3rd and 4th Test we had an unfit Sehwag replacing Zaheer along with injured Gambhir :haha: It was our lack of effort and general ineptitude which has made England much much better than what they really are.

i agree. the 4-0 is a consequence of india massively under performing rather than england playing mind-bogglingly exceptional cricket. but i was commenting on their approach and their prep. their team goes beyond the coaching staff, they have guys crunching numbers and running all kinds of analysis at universities to dissect a batsman's weaknesses. their deliveries are monitored, their workloads are managed cautiously, diets, fitness, everything about this team is like a finely tuned, elaborate military operation. their backroom staff gets the BEST out of their players. thats the kind of thing india can learn from. winging it can only get you so far. when the team can no longer rely on tendulkar, dravid and laxman's years of experience, they will need to get these systems in place. indian cricket is way behind the times. england have got it right, and their professionalism is on a different level.

These numbers and things were done back in 2006 too when the got whooped in Australia 5-0. This is nothing new in Engilsh Cricket. They have trainers and tutors for every damn thing. Just that they have had success in this series, it's going to be published and published big since their daddy hasn't scored much runs in this series.
