Pakistan has placed an advertisement in the US media to reach out to America on 9/11. "Which country can do more for your peace", asks the advertisement in the Wall Street Journal . "Since 2001, a nation of 180 million has been fighting for the future of the world's 7 billion." Dawn reported that Islamabad had initially given this advertisement to The New York Times but they refused to carry it. The ad says that since Sept 11, 2001, 21,672 Pakistani civilians have lost their lives. The army also has lost 2,795 soldiers. The country has lost $68 billion. The ad noted that despite sacrifices the country was still engaged in "the war for world peace". "Can any other country do so? Only Pakistan," it maintained. Pak-ad.jpg

Is this for real???? :cantstop: Have they completely given over to the lunatics? What kind of management okays douchebaggery of this magnitude? They got one thing right though.... Given that they've done so little, they are definitely in a position to do more.

Pathetic of Pakistani PR agencies to run this on September 11th. Pakistanis have a lost of lot of innocent lives - no doubt about that. However, there has been considerable support for terrorist groups by the establishment for strategic objectives and lot of violence is a direct result of these groups being allowed to set up shop in the state and access cash, weapons and recruits.

Its not just any random US smallville paper that had this 'ad'. It was the WSJ. What a sellout. Serious time for introspection by that paper and US media in general?

Kinda surprised by the reaction to this. Pakistan, for all its fault, has done one thing very well historically. And that is use the lobbying prevalent within US quarters. Why else do you guys think it took US this long to understand the reality of extremism?? India was shouting hoarse for 2 decades and over. Most independent observers admit Pakistani lobbyists are way better than India's. The ad goes in WSJ because WSJ has become the bastion of disgruntled right wing money makers who loath Obama and essentially Republican lovers. This may be a way to reach out to them in case Obama falters in the next election. Or it could very well just be a lobbying act.

^^ I don't think it was about lobbying. Why would US care about Indian interests ? The first U2 spy plane shot down over USSR actually flew from Northern Pak, and the program was initiated before Ayub Khan took control. Pak was an important cold war ally & that's what mattered. Russia dealt with a lot of condemnation over the handling of Chechnya conflict pre-9/11, western attitudes just took a u-turn overnight.

Indian Americans out number Pakistani Americans by a good 8-1 ratio ( or so says wiki). Indians are one of the most highly educated groups in the USA and exert an economic presence much greater than their proportion to the population. I don't know what most Americans think about giving aid to Pakistan, but its clear to almost everyone here where the money actually goes. In spite of the considerable economic clout of the Indians in USA, Indian Americans have hardly been able to lobby and cause any change in foreign policy. And neither has the Indian government used the clout of the Indian Americans (and NRIs) in this regard. Does it not weigh on the average Indian American's conscience that his tax dollars could be used by a Pakistani government that funds terrorists to kill his erstwhile countrymen?

For the same reason why they should realize how their policies have hurt them in the past. Two of the biggest blunders, in my opinion, of United States foreign policy in past quater or so century, are also what many within US claim to be their biggest: a) Support to mujahideen in Afganistan. b) Support to China to grow. Both was done to contain Russia essentially and both these are seriously hurting them today. India's foreign policy would be one that would be quite suitable for United States. when you see experts talk about these two countries as natural allies what with democracy, pluralistic society etc they are not overselling it. xxx

I will cut Indian-Americans some slack here. If anything they have created a quite positive image of India what with Silicon valley entreprenurs, Doctors and IT geeks. And knowing my penchant for criticism of NRIs in general you can rest assured its not just talking points. Pakistan has been historically better in lobbying in USA because they understood US better than India did. It is no different than India understanding Russia much better. There is political and strategic history here. What makes it unfortunate, from both India and US point of view, is that Pakistan milked US using its (US's) policies and they (US) never realized it. So Pakistan does not sign Nuclear first attack treaty (against India) because well US didnt do so either when Russia offered to do so in Europe. And US gets frustrated without admitting it is their very own cards dealt against them. Point being Pakistan understand how US works. Their powers that be, read Army, have been trained and retain key contacts in Pakistan. And end up using American aid money to lobby in US to further their interest. The returns are diminishing fast and an average American, or American media is not sympathetic to them at all these days. On the other hand the same set looks at India very favorably. And now you can try addressing the point raised about Islam :--D:--D xxx
