Although your focus was on Anita Raj, CA saab, I will focus on the song since its one of my favorites. a) The song has been written by Gulzar and one of the few occassions when Gulzar teamed up with Laxmi Pyaare. This was the first movie of JP Dutta and the desert footage drew rave reviews. Although the movie was a star studded affair it was Mithun who ran away with most accolodates with his Koi Shaq. b) The song itself draws a lot from the original composition by Amir Khusro Jihaal-e-Miskin. Jihaale-e-Muskin mukon tagaaful doraaye nainaa bataaye batiyaan. The first line is Persian, the second is Brijbhaasa. If that does not explain the Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb I dont know what does? On an aside note as fascinating it is to folks like Gulzar keep alive a song that was written say 700-800 years ago, what does it say of us as a nation that we have not kept alive Amir Khusro? A doyen by any yardstick?? Wow. Thanks for sharing this. Neither had I heard of this song, nor heard of this movie before I visited this thread. Rule of thumb: I avoid Mithun like plague. Just can't stand the guy. I listened to the opening stanza a few times and I couldn't make much of it. Zihal e muskin, maikun baranjish bahaar e hejira, hamara dil hai Zihal = no idea what this means. muskin = means poor. Very rarely used. Only if someone wants to showoff his/her Urdu vocab. :D maikun= no idea. baranjish = ba ranjish. The prefix ba means 'with'. for eg baizzat means with honour. ba ranjish means with hate/anger. bahaar = spring hejira= journey/flight/emigration ( of Prophet Mohammad S.A.W from Mecca to Medina) The whole stanza doesn't make any sense together. What does it mean? I agree with you about the lamentable state of Amir Khusrao's legacy today. An Urdu prof. from Mumbai University had once said that its not because of apathy, but because many 'purists' find it difficult to categorize Khusrao as an Urdu great and include him in their syllabus. Mainly because he wrote in Farsi and Brij Bhasha. IMO, this is an acceptable arguement, as Khusrao arguably predates the Urdu language. I've seen the syllabus. Its centered around the works of Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Sahir, Ghalib, Premchand & Firaq Gorakhpuri.
