Have to say I am surprised that this is a concern.
Its the mapping that is the concern and the formats. When I moved from sony ericsson to htc 3 yes back I used csv format. But then I was only moving phone numbers. But now I want to have a common address book of sorts where the superset is available. I have Outlook, I have Windows Contacts, I have a Gmail account and I am planning to buy an iphone. So first I need to get all my contacts in one place....and although it seems stupid I am resigned to the fact that I will need to do it manually. At least once that is done when I buy a new phone I jusr wanna synchronize. I dont use Yahoo

IPhone can sync with your google contacts. Not only iphone' date=' it works with symbian, blackberry and Windows Phone too[/quote']So you suggest that I have all my contacts - both phone book and email - in gmail. And then when I buy the iphone or whichever phone I finally decide to buy, then I synchronize it with google contact. Cool thanks! Anymore suggestions are welcome. As I understand, keep the base contacts format as the Google format and not Outlook or Windows, right?

Folks, also is vCard a good format to store your contacts in? I am assuming vCard is what the default Windows Contacts thingy in Win 7 uses. Is it a good enough format to sync contacts with other formats like Outlook, Gmail, Apple, etc?

I have a PhD in this. My initial consulting fee is $15 and then 45$ per hour after that. Send me a PM with the payment arrangement and I'll get you the "Best program for maintaining contacts". You have come to the right place.
