1983-2011 Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Play 50-over games at NCA to prove fitness: Selectors fiat Learning from the experience of watching seemingly fit players breakdown during crucial tours, the national selectors have asked those in line to be picked for the tri-series in Australia to report to the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore, and prove their fitness by playing two 50-over games. After realising that fitness tests, during which players only batted and bowled in the nets, werenÃÕ an indicator of match fitness, the selectors, in consultation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, have decided to hold two games the first on Thursday ahead of the team selection on Sunday. The selectors have also been guilty of including players in squads only to realise that they were actually unfit at the time of selection and were then forced to name a replacement. West Zone selector Surendra Bhave will watch ThursdayÃÔ game, while North ZoneÃÔ Mohindra Amarnath, who is currently at the Mumbai versus Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy semi-final at Wankhede Stadium, will join his colleague on Friday. Yuvraj Singh, who has recovered from non-malignant lung tumour-related complications, Harbhajan Singh, who had to miss the last three rounds of the Ranji Trophy due to a shin injury, medium-pacer Praveen Kumar (fractured rib), S Sreesanth (toe injury) and Munaf Patel (twisted ankle) have been asked to play the two games at the NCA. Those players without fitness-related issues Suresh Raina, Rahul Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel and Piyush Chawla but who didnÃÕ feature in the knock-out stages of the Ranji Trophy have also been asked to report for these games. Ÿe donÃÕ want to go by the players word because they arenÃÕ always a good judge of their own fitness levels. We have had embarrassing experiences in the past. These players will participate in two 50-over games. They will be divided into two teams, which will also contain Karnataka State Cricket Association Under-25 boys, a top BCCI official told The Indian Express. One of the embarrassing episodes the BCCI official is referring to occurred at LordÃÔ when Zaheer Khan limped out on the first day of the first Test. Virender Sehwag too didnÃÕ last the full tour and pulled out after playing in the third, fourth Tests in England. The case of medium-pacer Praveen Kumar, who was picked for the ODI series against the West Indies and the Test squad for the tour of Australia, highlights that the selectors havenÃÕ always done their homework. The selectors werenÃÕ aware that Kumar was carrying a rib injury and he had to be withdrawn from both the squads. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/play-50over-games-at-nca-to-prove-fitness-selectors-fiat/898699/0

rkt.india Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Eyeing a comeback to India’s one-day team, Yuvraj Singh took the field for a practice match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is Yuvraj’s first game since November last year. He has been recovering from a non-malignant lung tumour on his left lung. With India’s squad for the tri-series in Australia slated to be announced on Sunday, national selector Raja Venkat was watching the game to assess Yuvraj’s fitness. His comeback of sorts lasted 14 balls as he scored just eight. Suresh Raina (the opposition skipper), Praveen Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan, Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, Rahul Sharma and Parthiv Patel, all training at the National Cricket Academy, were part of the practice match against Karnataka’s under-25 cricketers. Venkat will stay back till Friday to watch another match where Harbhajan Singh is likely to play. Leading the team, Yuvraj bowled four overs conceding 26 runs. He came in to bat, with his side at 70 for two, chasing 286. Yuvraj started cautiously, playing out the first six balls, before hitting two boundaries off the next three. However, he couldn’t carry on for long. He was caught behind by wicketkeeper KC Avinash in trying to pull a Ronit More delivery. Irfan Pathan made 42. Praveen Kumar excelled with both bat and ball. He took two wickets for 51 and followed it up by scoring 39 off 24 balls. http://www.dnaindia.com/sport/report_yuvraj-scores-8-in-practice-match-at-nca_1636950

saneindian Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 I hope this doesn't mean Sachin being picked for the ODIs. Let the Rahanes and Tiwary's get their chances now.
Texy Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 This is bullsh!t ...he gave interview few days ago saying he is fit and ready to go. There is some serious political bullsh!t going on in the selection process
