Feds shut down Megaupload, arrest executives WTH? SOPA/PIPA not even in the picture and this happens? MU was just a file-sharing website. Amongst others, it also carried a lot of legitimate content. Also, Anonymous responded back in their own style. #OpMegaupload is currently trending. Can't help but think what would've happened if SOPA/PIPA were in place. Brace yourselves, folks. The worst is yet to come.

Oh what the hell. This is big big news. But let's be honest, file sharing sites like megaupload and rapidshare thrive and make money through premium subscriptions. A majority of these subscribers are involved in piracy. SOPA/PIPA if it comes to fruition, will certainly kick a lot of ass. Nothing free over the internet is going to stay afloat much longer. It's just a matter of time... tick tock tick tock... No more HD/1080p porn, sad day for internet users.

Back in the days, used to upload lots of videos over here and rapidshare. Sad to hear about all of this. But I guess no choice. Piracy needs to be stopped to in order for people to make some money.

The whole indictment is here : http://www.scribd.com/doc/78786408/Mega-Indictment Lots of email conversations have been recorded, and looks like the MU staff were also supporting some illegal links amongst others. Anonymous(via @YourAnonNews) claims that the attacks were co-ordinated using LOIC.

The Largest Attack Ever by Anonymous - 5,635 People Confirmed Using #LOIC to Bring Down Sites! #Anonymous
Oh, and LOIC is from the 4chan stables. Gizmodo article - What is LOIC?

Hah, all the hundreds of people who have told me to ditch youtube and upload all my videos on megaupload will now be a little quiet. I doubt youtube will be getting shut down any time soon.

To be honest, Megaupload was openly and blatantly infringing copyrights. So, not a surprise. I do not think they even heeded to DMCA takedown requests as I could find people using Megaupload for copyrighted shows and movies for all these years wherever I saw. All other links used to be pulled down including rapidshare etc. on DMCA but Megaupload never seemed to pull down the copyrighted videos etc. as I could find copyrighted shows even years later. They were supporting piracy openly and so, it is not wrong. SOPA and PIPA are different things. In simple words to give an example of SOPA and PIPA, if say any of you used an image from a US news website and provide it with the article with a proper linkback to the site, then the news site would be able to pull down ICF servers and arresting Ravi, Rajiv etc. without proper warnings. It gives sweeping powers to the big corporations to pull down anything that they "perceive" as infringing their copyrights. And it also allows them to put the owners of the site including user sharing websites (such as forums or video or any other sites) upto 5 years of prison just because someone else uploaded anything they perceived as copyright infringement. It is not just that and even linking to a site which "might" have some copyrighted content allows the company to pull down the linking site. And it bypass all legal process which is crucial in SOPA and PIPA and no notice or takedown request is allowed. This would mean all of the big sites including Youtube, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter or Wikipedia can be pulled down by big companies. Even if someone posts a link to some site in the blog comments of a blog you own still your website can be pulled down and you can be sentenced. Forums and other user content sites would anyways have been affected. It defies all logic and SOPA and PIPA will change all the freedom of the internet forever. In the Megavideo case, there is DMCA which should have been used and I suppose it was being used by MPAA constituents but Megaupload rejected DMCAs and hence, the problem. Even Hong Kong based file sharing sites such as Filesonic and Wupload comply with DMCA. So, it was a severe blunder for a US based company such as Megaupload group not to comply with DMCA.

The funny thing is, recently they associated themselves with all these artists such as Kanye West, Alicia Keys among others. Swizz Beats was supposedly the CEO of the company Some real WTF shii BTW what's the point of SOPA if they can take down the domain name anyway. Just like with SOPA you can still access the site via the IP
