I think the problem needs to be seriously looked at, like I said a few of my female friends who went to India all told me the same thing. Using the term "eve teasing" is watering it down a lot, the real term is sexual assault or sexual harassment. I live in Australia and a lot of these Indian students who come here have no idea how to treat women, I have seen it first hand how they stare at women on trains, buses etc. I know this sounds harsh but this is Australia, and when the girl is with their husbands/boyfriends and these Indian guys keep staring at the women, despite being told to not do it they continue to do so, and hence they end up getting bashed up. These guys think they are still in India and can treat women the same way they do there. Just look at the increase in rapes etc in Delhi, most of the rapes are very brutal and it seems to be rising every year. I know rapes and assaults happen allover the world and it;s not just India, but at the moment it seems like every day there is a rape in India and that's just the reported ones. In Ozzie Australia guys get bashed up for staring :blink:

It has happened to me with my girlfriend here in Australia, some Indian guys were staring at here and she told them to stop it, they continued to do so, I had to go up to them and threaten them, only then did they stop. I am not saying all of India or Indians are like this, but I have noticed this a lot in Australia, and like I said my female friends who have been to India have told me the same thing. I think a lot of it has to do with sexual repression and the way Indian society is structured, I know things are changing slowly and will take time. But the education and interaction between boys and girls needs to start at a young age in India. I am not having a go at Indians or India, but it's a worrying trend when every day in the papers or news you hear of reports of rapes and assaults, and that is only the reported ones.

Ram Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Completely disagree. Its not that we are not exposed to enough humour/sarcasm/wit/irony etc, but our generation has a unique dilemma. We grow up speaking our respective mother tongues, but we study and eventually think in English. The resulting semantic gap affects our ability to be articulate, especially in non professional situation. And these situations are the ones that generally call for light hearted banter/jokes. I think internet or cable penetration is just a medium. Some of the funniest authors I've read, had no access to either-> Oscar Wilde, PG Wodehouse were products of the no nonsense hard nosed Victorian society. You completely lost me there. :dontknow:

I want to know how you guys feel about all this, am I being too harsh when I bring these points to attention? Is it just my imagination and that of my Aussie friends who have traveled in India?
