There are a few emotion as strong for some kids than to visit a Bajrang Bali temple, put ye lamba tikka of sindoor and walk chest puffed out! Good on your parents to let you be and have you develop your own path. By the way I completely get the discipline thing about not eating certain things on certain days.

We are both probably Hindu, not that either of us has ever cared about it on MBs, but isnt that where the similarities end? Durga Puja for you is perhaps the Mysore variety, but for me it is a great splendor for India but the true Durga Puja remains the one that Bengalis do. Similarly what does Makar Sankranti mean for you? Dont know. But for me it means dahi-chuda and til ki mithai. Growing up my favorite festivals were Chath and Basant Panchmi (Saraswati Puja), again something you may not be too much into. The difference applies in thoughts as well. I was not offended by Goddess Lakshmi naked. You were. Why does it make you religious and me not so much? :cheer::cheer: I am not religious by any measure. I have also gone through similar upbriging as you, going through cultural rituals/traditions, but I have to force myself to go to a temple now. But at that time I was offended by MFH's paintings, just because how we are brought up worshiping the gods he had denigrated. Now I realize freedom of expression is as important as having the right to reject/criticise those works. He can paint whatever he wants, I can yell at him as much as I like or not accept what he does. But I feel a religious person will accept it this way. I agree in sentiment that religion is tightly laced into our culture/DNA.

Does it mean we are progressing as a society since its become very common these days for most Hindus describing themselves as Non-religious (FaceBook Profiles) like the enlightened western societies that disavow god, dogma etc. Disclosure: I am Agnostic.

Throughout that period i talk cricket, football, politics...... Honestly speaking, Religious intitutions are institutions of power. Its the weakness/mismanagement on part of those institution(atleast in case of Hindus or any other declining religion) that so many Hindus consider themselves non-religious.

Reminds me of Al Pacino's monologue in [i']Scent of the Woman I mean yeah me and you may not be religious but is it perhaps also because if one is truly religious, not the hating kind, the path is so damn hard?? Of course it is hard. Its far easier to be greedy than be generous, to remain ignorant than pursue knowledge endlessly, to give in to societal expectations than to take a stand, to carry on with illegal/immoral activities than to function based on the aspect of karma. Hell, its easier to bribe god by making temples than to get people together and build/run a school.

I am not religious. I am, however deeply spiritual. I still went to Tirumala when I went home this time. And, it was immensely refreshing. Because, this was the very first time, I was looking at a God, a reflection of my Origin, a mirror to my own inner Self and not a genie I had three wishes for. thats some statement! well put :hatsoff:

Internet Forum world does not reflect what Indian society looks like or where it is progressing.It gives you very false impression of society as it is mostly dominated by few highly educated indians working in MNC's and NRI's.It is mostly on forum you find people which are mainly non religious,Atheists ,agnostic who talk like as if we are living in an ideal world with no discrimination based on anything on the other hand you find totally opposite in real world.Don't know people either pretend to be so good on forums or actually good people just comment on forums
