seedhi Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Compared to people having lost their lives and homes in one of the most gruesome riots of Indian history, they are just some artifacts. I am sorry if I put murder, rape, and riots above statues in my value chain. Why don't you tell us about the grand coverage in the Australian media? You are delusional if you think this incident in some other country warrants the same level of coverage in the Indian media as the Gujarat riots, which would rank among the top 10 most important events of modern Indian history. It's like expecting the New York Times to give as much coverage to this incident as 9/11.:hysterical:Ask yourself, is this wanton destruction of Hindu/Buddhist artifacts in Maldives any less important than a court case for banning Gita in a remote town in Russia? I would suggest that this destruction of artifacts is partially related to some of the extremism on the rise in south India, in that the source of money and ideology in both cases is the Gulf. Indian media hyperventilated on the Gita issue and simply buried this equally (if not more) important event. PS: I am not much concerned about coverage by NYT etc.
The Outsider Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Ask yourself, is this wanton destruction of Hindu/Buddhist artifacts in Maldives any less important than a court case for banning Gita in a remote town in Russia? Personally, I felt that the Gita incident was blown way out of proportion, but there could be several reasons for it: 1. Russia is infinitely more important than Maldives in the Indian context. 2. The number of Hindus in India is infinitely more than Buddhists. 3. It was an official government/judicial action in Russia rather than an act of outlaws and vandals. But why don't you tell us what should be the "right" amount of coverage for the two incidents since you haven't even given us a media house which you consider a benchmark?
seedhi Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Personally, I felt that the Gita incident was blown way out of proportion, but there could be several reasons for it: 1. Russia is infinitely more important than Maldives in the Indian context. 2. The number of Hindus in India is infinitely more than Buddhists. There were images of Hindu Gods which were also smashed. I can think of several eye catching titles to a news report highlighting this fact. 3. It was an official government/judicial action in Russia rather than an act of outlaws and vandals. Indian media and the government do not utter a peep at the treatment of Indians (especially non-muslims) in the gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia where I think all non-muslim religious texts are completely banned. So the hypocrisy of Indian media/govt in this case is nauseating to me. But why don't you tell us what should be the "right" amount of coverage for the two incidents since you haven't even given us a media house which you consider a benchmark?I dont have any Indian media outlet as a benchmark, though some are better than others. On the incident of destruction of artifacts, I would have expected more coverage (and analysis) indicating to the obvious correlation with the rising extremism on the shores of south India. Perhaps more coverage could have elicited a response from the Indian govt as well and encourage Indian involvement of conservation of remaining such treasures. India is playing a similar role in Afghanistan too. Frankly, I did not even see one photo in the media's coverage of the incident.
mishra Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Sau baat ki ek baat...Jab tak kuyeen mein tel rahegaa....Tab tak raani ka Shingaar chalegaa... The day oil finishes, I am certain that democratic States will force all the religious (specially Islamic) institutions to striike out violence inciting texts and publicly denounce it else face closure. Big religious leaders will be asked to answer certain questions..... Till then, Media will behave as puppets and keep on ignoring violent acts. And certain Smart Asses will think that it communal act to ask questions , criticize peaceful religion or close the religious institutions

Australian media has no business covering Gujarat riots/destructing of artifacts as it is not relevant to the matters going on within the country. In India, the destruction of those artifacts is extremely relevant - As are forced conversions and destruction of temples. So where is the front page headlines this story deserves?
ViruRulez Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Pathetic. I thought Maldives to be fun place with beaches and babes. Their tourism is a lot more open I suppose as it is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. And I seriously hope atheism takes over the world soon. After seeing all the sh!t around the world, I seriously hope everyone around the world turns into atheists in the long run. In a way I have grown respect towards some communist countries in recent times due to their forcing of atheism. At least, atheism reduces a lot of the problems especially of religion.
Mariyam Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Pathetic. I thought Maldives to be fun place with beaches and babes. Their tourism is a lot more open I suppose as it is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. Not sure what you mean by open. It isn't as 'open' as Goa. Its more of a honeymooner's paradise. The way the atolls/resorts are set up, you're not likely to be disturbed or come across others. Only rarely do you meet other couples. Remember the 'foreigner only' spots in Goa, which we all vehemently oppose. There are entire atolls in Maldives on which are completely off limits to the regular Maldivians (apart from those who work in the tourist industry) . For Indians its just as good as home. Their supermarkets and grocery stores have everything that you get in India. I noticed even Haldiram aloo bhujia and boomer chewing gum :D And I seriously hope atheism takes over the world soon. You respect those countries who force an ideology ( in this case a non ideology) on their subjects? :((
Clarke Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 communist countries in recent times due to their forcing of atheism. Communist countries in essence create their own r3l1gi0n. Would you like Pol Pot as your virtual g0d ?

EnterTheVoid Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 And Indian media should make it a priority to discuss artifacts being destroyed in some other country when there are a multitude of more important issues within in India? That "some other country" is on India's doorstep. If one of Australia's surrounding countries was run by a totalitarian Jihadist government, than yea, the Australian media will give coverage if they go destroying artifacts/churches/synagogues etc Non - Muslims can't be citizens? LOL. Why don't they check whether their tourists are Muslims are not since they eat off their hands. Their whole freaking country is dependent on tourist dollars. :king:

Please let me know how many articles and news opinions are published in Australian newspapers about the pathetic conditions in Papua New Guinea?
EnterTheVoid Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Please let me know how many articles and news opinions are published in Australian newspapers about the pathetic conditions in Papua New Guinea? Err, a lot. Australia has vested interests in Papa New Guinea since a lot of troops are there for peace - keeping purposes. Mind you, they don't have to be there in the first place; they can pretty much sit back and watch the country tear itself apart since they are "some other country" that is largely irrelevant and no real value to Australia's economic interests. However, they rather not -- They are on Australia's doorstep just as the Maldives is on India's. If the "**** hits the fan" as the saying goes, the regional power comes in to put out the fire and calm things down. If Papa New Guinea has a Jihadist government and people flee the place in droves, you think Australia will just accept all the refugees with open arms? I don't think so.
The Outsider Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 What has it got to do with Jihaad? Papua New Guinea is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world where such artifacts you are crying about get destroyed by the dime and dozen by the tribals. Point me to 6 independent articles in the Australian press about the destruction of such artifacts over the last 6 years. And even India covers Maldives to a great extent as witnessed by the lnk Mariyam provided.

I don't see what that has to do with the Maldives unless you're suggesting the destruction in Maldives is no big deal since it happens everywhere else - In that case, congratulations on downplaying the vandalism of history :wtg:
The Outsider Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 ^ Just accept it that you've lost any semblance of reasoning you ever pretended to have. Here is a summary: 1. Sree_India with his knickers in a twist - Oh man the jihaadis have destroyed so many of somethings and Indian media is covering Gujarat. 2. Outsider - Sree, it's okay Gujarat riots are one of the biggest events in modern Indian history and to compare them with the destruction of some artifacts in another country in lunacy. 3. Sree_Oz - No, but Australia always does it! 4. Outsider - Can you give some instances of how Australia has covered the pathetic conditions in Papua New Guinea? 5. Sree_Oz - No, No, I can't they are under developed so we don't need to cover them! :hysterical: Enjoy and don't expect a reply.
EnterTheVoid Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Like I and many others have said, this is what's called putting words in other people's mouth and than accusing them of saying it. Accept it as a logic/comprehension fail on your part. I didn't say those words, definitely not in that context. You say Papa New Guinea is an under developed country - That much is factually correct, the rest is pure bung. You may as well have brought in Sudan/Ethiopia and accused me why Australia doesn't do anything when they go destroying anything that is non Islamic. Anywhere, where did I say that these news should get the same coverage as the Gujarat riots? I don't recall saying it anywhere, perhaps you imagined it.
Malcolm Merlyn Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 well i have lot of Maldiveans as my frienda from medical college and not even one of them came up as an extremist.they are dedicated to their religion but dont sort of behave that in a fundamenalistic way.most of them speak flawless hindi watch hindi movies and serials.i have friends who work in male and addu in govt hospitals and never faced any issue. this extremism is related to ousted president Gayoom who is trying to make a come back on theback of extremism.Maldiveans whom i have met are moderate people and this on the basis of knowing them for over five years.also most of these rioters are drug addicts who can be found in plenty in maldives. But i also throughly disagree with Mariyam and Shwetabh that Islamic fundamentalism isnt a problem.its a problem in every country which has muslim population. In the west they migrate to a certain country and after they have a significant population start demanding things and if denied say its islamophobia.etc etc etc. Then in the name of Islam they start killing people.so yes extremism in islam is a problem.but thay doesnt mean every muslim is the same.but also a significant no. is involved in these extremist activities. EnterTheVoid Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 "Some artifacts" ! Well done Shwetabh, you do Goebbels proud. The Taliban may as well be justified in blowing up the Buddha statues in Afghanistan on them being "some stupid statues made of cement".
Mariyam Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 But i also throughly disagree with Mariyam and Shwetabh that Islamic fundamentalism isnt a problem Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk Sunnyji, I NEVER said that Islamic fundamentalism isn't a problem. My comments on this thread were to do with Maldives as a tourist spot and my experience there. Can't understand why you're attributing that statement to me? Islamic fundamentalism is definitely a problem that we Indians face today. Mentalism is another issue that plagues the contemporary Indian society.
mishra Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 "Some artifacts" ! Well done Shwetabh, you do Goebbels proud. The Taliban may as well be justified in blowing up the Buddha statues in Afghanistan on them being "some stupid statues made of cement". what ideology drives the destruction of artifacts? How many people are following the ideology? Problem is level of threat. Is destruction of artifacts a repetitive of some occurrence from past?. Is there something in history to indicate what happened after that? Just ask the Egyptian Christian population who participated to gain democracy? How do they feel now??? I regarded Bengali Muslims that they are probably Bengali first but still Taslima Nasreen had to flee for Lajja. Some people know calculus(Logic can not prove every fact) and still think winning a argument can make them right......
