Ram Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I can understand how this can be touchy issue, but this world is not for sensitive people. Their differing philosophies to work not withstanding, I would simply pay the person who is better at is job a slightly higher amount (not much, but slightly higher. maybe 55-45). Its nothing personal, we are not distributing our own money here. Its the organization's money and it should be distributed in the organization's best interest. And when i say better at his job, I am looking at the following things; Is he professional - comes to work on time, is prepared for meetings, sticks to deadlines/committments, work hours are not random, dresses appropriately etc Is he a team player - Does he have fun working with other people, or does simply comes to work, sit infront of his work-station and leaves. Does he want to simply do his job or add real value to the organization - You can clearly state the difference in this aspect.
Mariyam Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Lurker how come you are having a second thought on this. I mean comeon BUDHAU ke liye tumhare vichar jag jahir hai. A is a budhao how come he is still there in your company forget about bonus come on man he is occupying the place which could have been utilized by younger. Aap kya keh rahe hain? 40 yrs pe to aaj kal log VRS bhi nahi letey.:giggle: Kisi bhi soorat mein mid 40s is not a budhao (from a work point of view). I don't get your point.
Prakat Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Lets call them the tortoise and the rabbit. This is how I would think this through, the bonus will most probably lead to some visible displays of the same, more from the rabbit than the tortoise. This will encourage the behaviour that has lead to the bonus. People in the company see the rabbit driving up in a bigger car, and it programs them to modify their behaviour and working styles to what works in your department or organization. Is that what your company needs? More rabbits? A bigger bonus to the turtle, may not necessarily lead to a equally flashy display, but if it does, then it will build up more turtles in the company. What would you pick?
jairamesh Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Have there been any deliverables set by you? and What exactly are these guys suppose to be delivering? From what you say, it seems Person B has met his deliverables and has got the ball rolling with potential revenue busting ideas. Person A sounds like someone working in a communist run mining company, where good ideas are just around the corner but never arrive. Conclusion: Give more to Person B because he delivered, as you mentioned, in a fast moving economy. I am also abit suspicious how both of their behavior is perfectly stereotyped in relation to their age.

Jersey #10 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Lurker is Person A. He's just trying to find out how much he deserves in the share. Tell your boss to split it
asterix Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 This is like comparing SRT & Virat Kohli... Go with your instincts, Lurks..
Jersey #10 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 TBH, it's very simple What positions do these two employees hold? Higher the position, higher the bonus. Example, Engineer III gets higher bonus than Engineer II. If they hold the same post then split it right down to the last penny.
Yoda-esque Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Lurker is Person A. He's just trying to find out how much he deserves in the share. Tell your boss to split it :haha:

Lurker Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 PS: Is the end of year bonus taxable in the USA? Or is that dependent on the state? It is Federal taxable, as in you have to pay the Central Govt regardless. States differ on whether they charge state income tax or not. It is actually a very touchy subject because along with Central Tax you get deducted for Social Security, medicare, medicaids etc too. If you throw in 401 K(Provident fund) the deductions increase. As a thumb rule, if you get a 10K bonus you may get around 6500 or thereabouts. I'm assuming both of them have a similar job profile. How should their age/ thinking patterns etc affect the bonus at all. Why can you not just apportion the bonus in the ratio of the profits ( or what ever tangible parameter by which you've measured their performance for the past 1 yr) they've booked for your company? Shouldn't the bonus be directly a function of their output and not of their means/personality? If I were to device a bonus calculating system, I'd place more weightage for long term solutions than quick fixes and consider that while splitting up the bonus. You are quite right, I am overanalyzing this. Needless to say there are more parameters that what I have shared here for obvious reasons. But this is one of the thoughts I ran into. On one hand the youngster wins because he had his shares of successes, got us the 2 minutes of fame where needed and brought velocity of delivery. At the same time the quality of the senior chap is lot better. To go back to Sony vs Google model, Sony never released a beta product. It has proper 20 year plans and designed worlds top devices like that. Google does bunch of beta releases and doesnt have that kind of time. Still Sony is a has-been, Google is top dawg. Thats just plain fact too. I can understand how this can be touchy issue, but this world is not for sensitive people. Their differing philosophies to work not withstanding, I would simply pay the person who is better at is job a slightly higher amount (not much, but slightly higher. maybe 55-45). Does he want to simply do his job or add real value to the organization - You can clearly state the difference in this aspect I think you have summmed it up correctly Sriram. To push a question though, your barometer seems to be strictly the 2011 performance, which frankly bonuses are for. However what role does the future play in this? You may already be encountering this problem, or would be soon enough. From what you say, it seems Person B has met his deliverables and has got the ball rolling with potential revenue busting ideas. Person A sounds like someone working in a communist run mining company, where good ideas are just around the corner but never arrive. lol@Communist analogy. No it isnt quite like that Jai but I get what you are trying to say. Lurker is Person A. He's just trying to find out how much he deserves in the share. Tell your boss to split it Hum is sab se uppar hain :giggle: By the way long time no see..whats up? This is like comparing SRT & Virat Kohli... Khalpat saab ne pahle hi mere haath baandh diye bol ke about my vichaar on the Maharathi. Speaking of bonus system though, how does it work across the pond?

Desi Cartman Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 You know that Im in the same line of business, knowing today's world and market I would give uncle jee 35% and pappu chewing gum the shana man 65%. The reason is simple, Uncle will help you keep what you have but to get you more dhanda you would need Pappu chewing gum. BTW if your group is big enough then its best to change their roles a bit... PS: yes I am like pappu chewing gum PPS: I am allergic to chewing gum ... gala kharab ho jata hai
asterix Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Khalpat saab ne pahle hi mere haath baandh diye bol ke about my vichaar on the Maharathi. Speaking of bonus system though, how does it work across the pond? Yearly apprisal. One-to-one meeting with the boss. He or she will go through the apprisal process and then based on scores etc. and human elements, a bonus is decided.. Once the employee goes through the apprisal process, it leaves less chance of any disappointments..
Ponka Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 If you're a manager than you must have your company goals financially infront of you. Now For example, if you've to meet the goal of completing projects worth estimated $ 500'000 then identify How much of that estimate is achieved by projects worked upon by Person A and Person B then distribute accordingly. Whereas in those projects where they both worked together then find out a differentiating criteria such as # of hours worked upon, solution implement by whom? or whose idea was it to develop that solution (A or B). This is the most fairest way.
Brainfade Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 lol@entire bonus. Nah...havent become so much Republican CA ( :winky: ) Well, from your dilemma, it is obvious that you are not hopelessly liberal, either. If you were, you'd take a 30% cut, then find which members on your team are unionized, and split the bonus equally among them ... performance be damned :-)))))))!! FWIW, I like desi cartman's thinking. Opposite of my POV, but considers the question: who has the greater "upside/potential."?
Raghav_12 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Aap kya keh rahe hain? 40 yrs pe to aaj kal log VRS bhi nahi letey.:giggle: Kisi bhi soorat mein mid 40s is not a budhao (from a work point of view). I don't get your point. Rule no.1 for forum. If you don't understand some post or you feel some post is out of context or is very odd, then be assured that, it is some veiled jibe either against Sachin (mostly) or in favour of Sachin(sometimes). Example - 1. People comparing Wally Hammond with Rameez Raja 2. Poeple quoting Mark Boucher as if he is greatest statesman in cricket

And full marks to you for being the first man in human history to have gala kharaab by eating chilgum :whack: Well, from your dilemma, it is obvious that you are not hopelessly liberal, either. If you were, you'd take a 30% cut, then find which members on your team are unionized, and split the bonus equally among them ... performance be damned :-)))))))!! Oh I am a liberal at heart but more left to the center than a die-hard liberal. For example, I am a big critic on some liberal having a go at religious people (read Bill Maher and his diatribe in support of athiesm). And Unions are not that bad CA. Surely an academic can not complain of Unions, can he? :winky:
