And although, Pakistanis tried to adopt a fake arabic/persian culture after independence and tried to neglect their mother language- Punjabi (coz they were such dumb asss-holes). But, still if you visit Pakistani Punjab, you will find lots of similarities between the areas close to Indian Punjab border. And when you r saying, that Muslims are non-existent in Punjab, thats not true at all. Yes, they are a minority literally but there are still good no of muslims in Punjab. ViruRulez Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 It is probably due to their common culture and language. Moreover, Bangladesh is a bit anti-Pakistan in a way and so, that also helps. And they are a lot more secular compared to Pakistan which is one of the main reasons why Indian Bengalis somewhat support Bangladeshi Bengalis whereas Pakistani Punjab are not that liked that much by Indian Punjabis (though there are perhaps some Pakistani Punjabi artists and singers who are revered in Indian Punjab too perhaps). Moreover, Bangladesh as a whole is quite secular and open and to be honest, even more open than India in some case. For example, their govt. is courageous enough to have legalized prostitution too long ago whereas even after 60 years after independence, Indian govt. even after being a diverse and secular nation never dared to move above the hypocrisies. Lastly, if I am not incorrect Bangladeshis are pro-India to some extent especially the secular ones (their country is also divided based on religious and secular lines if I am not incorrect) in contrast to the Pakis who are almost anti-India in most cases. So, that also helps. Even Chunky Pandey was their superstar when he went to act there for many years. :cantstop: Having said that, it is not that only some Indian Bengalis are somewhat supportive of Bangladeshis and vice versa but it is also similar with other regions. Indian Tamils are also somewhat supportive of Lankan Tamils and Indian Gorkhas/Nepali origin people are somewhat supportive of Nepalis etc. Even in history, you had Parsis who had brought many Iranis to India by providing them financial and other support once they became rich in the British Era though they were living here for thousands of years. So, yes the country is also divided on regional and linguistic lines which also matter in many cases and they often see as a group even if they are of different countries. Having said that, that is only support and empathy I suppose and their national loyalties and top priorities lie for their respective countries rather than their linguistic or cultural ties.

Not comparable to what happened on the western border in 1947, still a significant number.

ShebbySB Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I'm a Bengali & It's true that we've a soft corner for Bangladeshis coz our food,language,culture everything is quite similar.But there is 2 kind of bengalis in West Bengal Bangal(35%) & Ghoti(65%).Ghotis are the native people of west-bengal & Bangals are of Bangladeshi origin hindus who crossed the border during partition or were forced to move out of Bangladesh by the Bangladeshi muslims.My grandfather was forced to move out of Bangladesh who was a landlord & eventually he did.He still have that scar & he hates bangladeshis.I've no problem with them though as I've been there & they are very friendly people & I felt at home there.My mom is a punjabi though & her family used to live in Lahore before the partition.I gotta tell u that they hate Pakistan like hell.

There is nothing wrong with that statement, and in my humble opinion there is a lesson to be learnt from here. Yes an average Punjabi does not exactly love Pakistan, nor does an average Bengali love Bangladesh. However a Punjabi Sikh/Hindu certainly develops a proximity with a Punjabi Pakistani when they meet abroad, or when they travel to other country. Same with Indian Bengali vs BD Bengalis. This has as much to do with culture and traditions, as it has to do simply with the language. Nothing bonds two people quickly than the ability to converse in a common language. Forget Punjabis, often it is easier for someone like me to relate to a Pakistani because we converse in Hindi/Urdu much easier than say when I am with a Tamilian when often I have to switch to English. The lesson here that I was talking about earlier is how Urdu got slaughtered because of it being tied to partition - different people, different religion, different language theory. Long after partition Urdu was made to carry the stigma that it was language of Muslims, and it has slowly but steadily died in its own nation of birth. Had Punjabi, or Bengali, been associated with partition I suspect they would have died in atleast one of the two nation. It survives, and bonds people, because it is well beyond religious ownership....and rightfully so too. xxx

When one talks of Pakistan, then it becomes a contest of India vs Pakistan. However, let's change it to East/West Punjabis and the dynamics change. The language, poetry, music, culture keep the two Punjabs connected albeit at a very superficial level. There are Punjabi language conferences where people from both sides come and talk with some being held in East/West Punjab as well in foreign countries. There have been a lot of musical influences on both sides i.e the likes of Surinder Kaur/Prakash/Narinder Kaur's folk songs being 're-sung' after decades via Musarrat Nazir who would then popularize these folk songs into Pakistan. The Indian Punjab has been more liberal as the works of Bulleh Shah, Sultan Bahoo, Waris Shah are still taught in Punjabi textbooks where as in the 1980, all non-muslim literature was removed from the books in Pakistan as it underwent fundamental rule. Furthermore, the Pakistani Punjabis are still fighting for the rights of their mother tongue Punjabi to be taught in schools and at higher levels of education. There is a lot of historical places for both Hindus/Sikhs in modern day Pakistani Punjab. Infact, the birthplace of Guru Nanak I believe lies in modern day Pakistan and many Sikhs pay their respect and visit Nankana Sahib each year. Many pakistanis would not know that it was written by Amrita Pritam and that it is sung at Waris Shah's memorial in Pakistan. Mohammad Rafi, who's originally from Amritsar decided to stay in India would have been a Pakistani had he just crossed over to Lahore in 1947. Something to think about.
