So where is Akhilesh Yadav post the cancellation of his much touted Harvard address on Kumbh Mela? More importantly, who financed the trip for the whole team? The Uttar Pradesh chief minister who had boycotted his presentation after the brief detention of his cabinet colleague Azam Khan at the Boston airport, was scheduled to return on 29 April along with chief secretary Javed Usmani and Azam Khan. The CM and the chief secretary are now expected to return to Lucknow on 2 May, while Azam Khan returned to UP yesterday. While the Samajwadi Party defended their leader by claiming that the “CM by his mature conduct in the USA, brought glory and honour to the people of UP and the country,” critics argue that the trip was financed by the tax payers of UP and was a mere PR exercise aimed at enhancing the political stature of the CM, who is struggling to carve out a place for himself in a party and government with multiple power centers. A section of the Samajwadi party has also questioned the move of the CM to visit USA, without any substantial agenda for the people of the state. “The foreign jaunt of the CM along with a minister and dozen officials cost over Rs 60 lakh to the state exchequer. The amount could be even more, as we are told that the CM has stayed back in London along with his wife and children, which has delayed his return to India to 2 May,” said a minister. “There is absolutely no justification for this US junket. In any case he is scheduled to visit USA by the end of June for meeting investors and addressing an investor’s conference there. His uncle Shiv Pal Yadav and father Mulayam Singh Yadav, both were against the idea but ultimately the wish of the CM prevailed,” said a SP leader who has recently been appointed as the head of a government organisation with the rank of cabinet minister. “There is no justification for spending the hard earned money of the people for just an 18 minute presentation at the Harvard University. There were a total of 26 speakers at the two day symposium, where during a 90 minute discussion on Kumbh Mela on 26 April, UP chief secretary Javed Usmani got only 18 minutes to speak,” said the SP leader. Vivek Kumar, associate professor, sociology, JNU, raises a more fundamental question. “Let’s be clear on the hype created on the UP chief minister’s visit to Harvard—he was not invited by the President of the Harvard University—he was not invited by the Harvard Business School—he was also not invited by the Harvard Law School. Then who invited him? “The CM had gone to participate in the two day symposium organised annually by the South Asian Institute of Harvard University and was supposed to present a paper on a session on Kumbh mela, like any other academician or activist. We came to know that about 50 students, mostly south Asians and Indians, had attended the Kumbh Mela in UP and one of the CM’s close associates, said to be a minister of state, knew someone at Harvard. So he contacted them and managed the show So this was a PR or image building exercise. The UP CM and his team were not state guests; neither were they official guests of the University. They were on a private trip and spent the money of the tax payers. Harvard did not sponsor their trip,” he added. So what did the people of UP gain by their chief minister’s trip to the USA? Far from creating any positive environment for potential foreign investors, it created more animosity and bad blood for the state, which is clubbed among the BIMARU states. “UP has never witnessed a situation when the CM, chief secretary, Assembly Speaker and two senior cabinet ministers are abroad at the same time. This has happened in a government where the CM has himself ordered that the district magistrate and district police chief will never be allowed leave at the same time,” said Ashok Mishra, a senior CPI leader. Meanwhile, the SP continues to heap praise on its chief minister and his leadership style. “Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, by boycotting the presentation, presented a shining example of competent leadership,” said Food and Civil Supplies Minister and the SP’s spokesman Rajendra Chowdhary. He added that “no self respecting leader of the country can tolerate the humiliation of the senior leader of the minority community like Azam Khan. The CM, by staying away from the symposium enhanced the prestige of the state, Constitution and the party”.

Okay this is a very old discussion issue. But I don't know, I still hate this smug guy. Still think he is an arrogant fellow. Still think that he is a salesman who tries to sell himself off. Do you young kids hate him or adore him? Or just pay no attention to him? How do you view his character? Thanks ka..ka..ka..ka..kiran!

Hating SRK for promoting himself is like hating Sachin for practicing hard before games. Duh, news flash – The guy’s in the promotional/entertainment biz. What do you want to him to do? Stay anonymous and act from behind a spider-man mask? Having said that, SRK is not entirely faultless either. He’s an incredibly talented actor who under-sells himself by making mass-movies geared more towards the box office success than critical acclaim (Honorable exceptions – Chak de, Swades). But hey, it is his choice to decide what kind of movies he wants to make. He bought an IPL franchise for the sole purpose of expanding his market in Pakistan and B’desh, made a concerted effort to buy mediocre players from those countries in the first auction and ended up making KKR one of the laughing stocks of the IPL world (Again, its his money and he can decide who he wants to buy). Finally, he makes some questionable endorsement choices like appearing in cringe worthy fairness cream commercials, especially when you consider the fact that there probably millions of fans out there who worship and follow every word of what he says (But then again, it is his choice to decided which product he wants to endorse and which not to). But the straight answer to the question – Of course I don’t HATE SRK. Why would I? He’s an Indian success story who’s managed to attain global fame thru years of years of hard work, perfecting his craft. Unlike so many of his peers, he has not gotten into trouble with the law and looks like a committed family man. To sum it up, 99/100 of people who proclaim to have some sort of hatred for SRK will happily swap places with him.

Mr Ram, I actually read ALL what you wrote. But I don't think being successful should be equated with being good. He is a selfish person who cares about himself. He is a smug. If you remember, he hit a guard at Mumbai stadium and abused other staffs there when his children were asked to get out of the stadium after an IPL match was over. Apparently, it was just a rule not to allow anyone on the ground after the mid-night of the IPL match. This is just one of the case. Btw, this is an opinion poll.

How can you conclude that he is selfish? Not that I condone any violence, but SRK was called a Pakistani by the ground staff at the Wankhede. This was heard by him, his children and the friends of his children. Being called a Pakistani is not exactly a very pleasing platitude, you see.
