So was there no spin of recent propaganda of Modi helping meet a Nepali man, Jeet Bahadur, reunite with his family after so many years? Because it emerges now, according to CNN-IBN, Jeet Bahadur had already met his family in 2012... :giggle: Modi is doing fine... He doesn't needs to do all these... All these dramabaazi gives ammunition to opposition... All these can be avoided or need to do a better home work... Rubbish - it was discovered that he had travelled to Nepal in 2012- not necessarily met his family. And way to miss the whole point of the story, its about taking a child labourer under his wings, educating him, bringing him up to a fine young man.

The SPIN that Modi requested a Nepali businessman to trace the family, which he did within a month. Modi could've merely asked Jeet Bahadur about the location of his family, as he met them in 2012... Just saying that SPIN is involved here without doing much home work and it ultimately puts Modi in a bad light as somebody who allows his team to pull a 'fast one' if not himself...

One way of reading Modi’s actions since coming to office is to see his model of change not as one that begins with big ideas but with small actions. Modi’s allegiance is to the existing system and his focus seems to limit his active area of operation and then make things work as they were intended to. His Independence Day speech is a return to the politics of first principles- one where a leader promises change not by using the complex instruments of policy but by the simplicity of resolve. It identifies some simple building blocks of change and charts a course along dimensions that are easy to agree upon. It also seeks a reciprocal promise from the people of the country to change their mindsets and ways, something that politicians have been loath to do of late. In many of his pronouncements, including his last speech, he has somewhat surprisingly stressed on the need to look beyond his party’s majority and to try and build a consensus. And while this can potentially be discounted as rhetoric, this stated desire is not inconsistent with the model of change that he appears to be envisaging. Create a mechanism of delivery that works, focus on goals that are difficult to argue about, minimise distractions by a combination of steering clear of contentious and agonising questions of a fundamental kind, ignoring criticism as long as possible, removing people who are obstacles as well as punishing those that ‘create trouble’ visibly. In many ways, what we are seeing is a form of obedience training that the system is going through. Simple rules, stated clearly and reinforced rather than enforced using basic instruments of reward and punishment. Media in particular is being given a message that it isn’t quite as important as it imagines itself to be. In this theory of change, Modi is imagined like a headmaster, benevolent but firm who presides over a dysfunctional system and wills it into changing. The modality employed is through providing reasons from within rather than using force from without. For instance, in the Modi scheme of things, corruption is sought to be stifled by creating disincentives rather than by exposing it. Good read, I say.

Particular liked the first point, For decades, we have heard prime ministers lie to us about India’s ‘greatness’ on Independence Day. This August 15, for the first time, we heard a prime minister remind us that although we are capable of being a great country, we are not there yet. We have a long, long way to go. Narendra Modi reminded us of things we usually ignore or lie to ourselves about. We like to excuse our most obvious shortcomings on the hollow justification that as a ‘poor country’, we can hope for no better. In our hearts we know the truth, but have got used to pretending on occasions like Independence Day that our Bharat is truly ‘mahaan’.
