The government will amend the Constitution, if need be, to provide reservation in job promotions to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. This was announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday at the conclusion of an all-party meeting here, at which most parties called for legally sustainable legislation in the backdrop of the Supreme Court striking down such a measure. While no time frame was given as to when the constitution amendment Bill would be introduced, it was clear that the governmentÃÔ proposal to bring it in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday was deferred. Briefing reporters at the end of the three-hour meeting, V. Narayanasamy, Minister of State in the Prime MinisterÃÔ Office, said: űrime Minister Manmohan Singh said the government is in favour of bringing an amendment in this regard and would bring an amended Bill soon after legally examining all aspects. The government would help the States which found it difficult to provide reservation in the wake of the court verdict. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) did not oppose the move but said they would like to study the Bill first. Ramgopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said the Bill, as proposed, would do injustice to the OBCs, adding the party would oppose it if it did not include the OBCs and minorities. D. Raja of the Communist Party of India said the Left parties supported the government move unconditionally. Few people have asked me 'is caste system still there in India?' and I used to say it is there in villages and among uneducated people.. i was so wrong.. it is alive and kicking all over the place.. and it is supported/promoted by our government...

My father, all my uncles worked in national banks and I'm glad that they are all retired now. I dont know how my dad would have been able to cope up with someone else getting promoted instead of him because of the caste.

My dad was super pissed when his junior got promoted ahead of him just based on her caste. My dad retired this year while that female is already two places above him and still has 15 years of service left. What's worse, my dad has a Masters degree while she did only Bachelors. It's so unfair to people like my dad. :((

^ Happened to my Dad too, some guy actually changed his name & got new caste certificate to get promoted. Heard he suffered from depression later.

A cousin of mine worked harder and got better grades and lived in Govt apartments and had many friends who were SC/ST. All these families are well to do but still they got into good colleges with worse grades and rankings than him. The roles have been reversed and now people belonging to higher caste are being targeted.

Surprisingly it is Samajwadi party that is opposing the move. BJP as usual is quiet and sitting on the fence.
Samajwadi Party is not opposing the move. They just want their vote bank (OBC's and Minorities) to be included in that list.

The problem is that all haf decent employees will gradually leave and the system will be left with almost all reservation walay employees. Of course there will be people who are qualified, good in the remaining lot but majority will do jack shyt. The system will crumble even more and sarkari offices will work even slower (if thats possible)

My view on the topic of Muslim reservation is that if the Muslims are converted Dalits, then it makes sense ( or could make sense on the basis of past principles). Else, this entire reservation thing for all Muslims ( job reservation/ educational reservation etc in AP and a few other states) does more harm than good. It is just a carrot that is kept dangling every time there is an election. It also, unfortunately, instills a sense of entitlement among the recipients where there should be none. People should have the will to excel. And makes others more resentful when they see someone less talented or educated ahead of them simply because of being born in another community (and in this case, one which by and large, wasn't even historically disadvantaged). Don't want to take this discussion on a tangent, but IMO best for the Muslim community and the nation as a whole in India to see through this ploy and try and compete with the rest on level terms.
