carnish Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Difference is that we don't make blanket statements like Sehwag should retire. Why should he? He has a great Test record' date=' an amazing odi record and in T20 we expect him to make a difference in T20 Cup later this year. There's a world of diffrence in someone asking a player to be dropped from a particular format and asking for his retirement across all formats.[/quote'] He is saying that he should giving a reason ... Its not a statement made for trolling. Even some Indians said KP should retire during the ongoing saga. People will say why should he.. but its just about making our views. We say Sachin should retire ... Why should he actually?? He is 40 yes .. but who says 40 year olds cant play ?? You are not setting the yardstick right. Had Panther made a statement without saying why he wants sehwag to retire I would have understood you calling him a troll.
Spiderguy252 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 If Gambit fails in all 4 innings this series, there should be questions about his place for the upcoming 8 tests against tougher opposition. Rahane should get a look-in IMO. Sehwag I think is relatively safer.
Stuge Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Sehwag is Sehwag .. if you still don't understand this then you've just started watching cricket yesterday .
The Outsider Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Sehwag is Sehwag .. if you still don't understand this then you've just started watching cricket yesterday . That's not true at all. I can list so many innings of Sehwag from before 2008 where he showed a very tight game at the start of his innings and also during difficult passages of play - his debut century, his first century as opener at Nottingham, 80 odd he scored in the same series at Lords, the 155 at Chennai against McGrath and Gillespie, of course the 195 at MCG, double hundred at Galle, 150 at Adelaide. In none of these innings did he start hitting brainlessly as he has been doing over the last couple of years.
vvvslaxman Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Viru is not going to change. Worked for him thus far bar last few series. His offensive batting is his best defense .It is a high risk game. Suddenly expecting him to play like Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar is out of question. Either you keep him and let him play the way he wants or drop him. Don't expect him to change.

Spiderguy252 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Even B McCullum or Gayle are way more secure at the top of the order than Sehwag. I wish the fanboys quit giving excuses. Can't remember the last time Sehwag played a useful innings. Must have been against the Kiwis in the last tour. And that was two years ago!

He has no hundreds outside the subcontinent since the start of 2009 whereas he had 5 before that when he was scoring slower.

They are not exceptions. His game was much tighter during that time. His strike rate since 2009 is 92 and before that it was 78. That's a general trend and can't be explained by a few exceptions.

Can't remember the last time Sehwag played a useful innings. Must have been against the Kiwis in the last tour. And that was two years ago! He has a career strike rate of 82 or something.. Not many have such a strike rate in ODIs. This has spanned over 8000 runs. Rain or shine he is like that. Sure he has played few sensible knocks. But those were rare. Even in those innings he would eventually pick up the pace and go for shots. If he is overcautious then also he gets out by edging while defending.
saneindian Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 those are exceptions and can be classified as UNlike Sehwag .I still remember how he got in that MCG test match and later India lost the match . In that very innings, Sehwag had scored just 25-30 runs till lunch leaving so many deliveries and playing with extreme caution. These days he hardly seems to have a plan B. Its trying to hit everything for a 4 despite knowing his reflexes have slowed down and that he hasn't scored runs.
The Outsider Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Sehwag averaged 43 outside the subcontinent till 2008, which is pretty good for an opener batting in alien conditions and has averaged 23 since then which is shambolic. The reason is that he used to leave deliveries and play a much tighter game and now bats like a slightly better version of Afridi.
panther Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 sehwag relies on the cut and scoring runs down to third man if you don't give him width he will throw his wicket away. against spin he doesn't have much weakness apart from brainfats against spin.
vvvslaxman Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 They are better prepared for Viru nowadays. The employ a third man straight away. They also found few chinks. Everything at the body. Either bouncer or good length into body giving no room then throw a wide one. Also he has regressed overall regardless of the surface. His defense is also not precise these days. OVerall we are witnessing a guy who has lost his touch. We have to see whether it is temporary or permanent.

His record in the subcontinent has been phenomenal during the same time: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/35263.html?class=1;filter=advanced;host=6;host=7;host=8;orderby=start;spanmin1=01+Jan+2009;spanval1=span;template=results;type=batting;view=innings Average of 74 and strike rate of 97. Sachinism Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Wish Rahane and GG had opened' date=' this is an ideal series to try that .. Sehwag has to bat at 5 going forward he does not have the hand eye coordination to open anymore, particularly overseas[/quote'] Doubt he's lost that much hand-eye co-ordination. Got off to a good start, possibly carried away? But yeh, I'd prefer Rahane opening and Sehwag in the middle order, Raina needs to sit out.

Against Australia he did struggle in India. I remember they had a short leg and peppered him with short balls. It worked actually. Despite all those scores he didn't make that much of an impression against West Indies as well. Never went on to make a big one. Last big innings was the one that came against NZ. By his own standards he has regressed battingwise. Hope he rediscovers his touch.
Ultimate_Game Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Sehwag's downfall in Tests has coincided with advent of IPL. I don't think Sehwag cares about anymore. He just goes out and plays like it's a odi game not even bothering to get his eye in nowadays.
Trichromatic Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Sehwag was aggressive before 2008 and he used to play high risk game, but his shot selection was much better than what he is doing now. He didn't used to go after everything earlier.
The Dark Horse Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 One of these two needs to be dropped, its time they put a price on their wicket.
