Everyone wanted Sachin to quit after 2007 (round about same age as Strauss) England tour this was after two years 2005/6 in which Sachin scored one hundred in 14 tests and in 23 tests during three years 2005-2007 Sachin scored 3 100s and two were against Bangladesh. Dravid before this England tour last scored overseas 100 in 2006 still they did not quit and they kept fighting thru adversity. Sachin became world bestman in 2011 and Dravid was best Indian batsman in England. Strauss was a opener for team which plays in conditions which favor new ball so it is obvious his average will lower. It is not like Strauss is liability on the field and well those are my views I would like a captain who is with the team thru to tough times.

im talking abt after ashes victory he has been in really bad form he was a nice player not taking anything away form him but was in pretty shyte form lately and to fail even against india away from home is just :hysterical:

Sabby, Why are so determined to put strauss down? He averages over 40 in test matches and has been a very good servant to English cricket and on top of that is a nice guy who never seems to have a bad word to say about the opposition. No-one is saying he is an all time great but on his day he was certaintly a very good opener. I also admire the fact that he doesnt hang around when he realises he's on a downhill slope, unlike say ponting and even I hate to say it on here Laxman who both should have retired a long while ago.

LOL even when sachin and dravid were going through their slumps they avgd 50. you know why... because at tehir peaks (Srt - late 90s, dravid - mid 2000s) they were touching 60. strauss never touched 50 during his good years and is now avg 40 in his lean years.

He is actually quitting at the right time - his game has dropped down and with England in trouble there would have been the thought to sack him anyway. It will be surprising if he does retire. He is not a character who chickens out. Very much unlike English.

he was a average player his role was tough it is not easy to well against new ball in those conditions he failed against us @ england being a indian fan u must know it is not easy to play our bowler with new ball

Sorry but are you blind or something? Read the complete thread in what context that comment was made. We are welcoming Strauss decision to quit and he's accurate in his judgment. It does not mean we are putting a foot on him. If anything there is more respect for Strauss than most other people in the dressing room.

I have to be honest I dont exactly his figures series by series but when Laxman toured England I thought he looked well past his best, his reactions seemed to have gone and he looked well over the hill. Honestly no offense at all but Im suprised he didnt retire after that series, Dravid looked the best of the lot and retired first which suprised me, he seemed much fitter than VVS and sachin.

At the right time Strauss. He was really struggling with his batting. Definitely one of the most likeable English Cricketer of his generation. Not really liked his batting but he was a good batsman. Averaging overall 40+ is good for an opener.

im not he was good player.. and was going through bad form and tht doesnt seem like getting better im jsut saying he took good decision and i would like our players too learn a thing from him too :dontknow: but to say he didnt need to retire just cos guys like tendulkar,ponting are still playing i was responding to tht comment.. i think instead of saying strauss should have continued like other players even in bad form at old age other players need to look at strauss :hatsoff:

Yes I dont like to see KP batting too much and I accept your argument that a captain needs to see his team through difficult times but if you read his statements Strauss clearly says that at his age, he doesnot see himself having enough determination and motivation required to inspire him for delivering what he had been over the years let alone improve upon that and once that stage comes in a players career its usually a correct decision to quit rather than just extending your career without the right attitude for playing the game. He was in my view the best British captain over the last three decades if I may say but this was his end and it was timed just perfect. Your arguments about Dravid and Tendulkar are irrevalent as Sachin still says that he has the will to perform for his team whenever he goes to the ground and the day he wont feel like he is improving he will call it quits.
