In an interview to The Wall Street Journal, an American news daily, Modi said, "The middle class is more beauty-conscious than health-conscious-that is a challenge." "If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they'll have a fight-she'll tell her mother, 'I won't drink milk. I'll get fat.'" he told the daily. Modi's response came following the WSJ question that "about half of Gujarati children under five were stunted, or too short for their age, as of 2006, according to the latest available figures from the Indian government." Among the industrial states with a high per capita income in India, Gujarat ranks pretty low on health and nutrition. It also performs worse than the national average and some of the poorer states on other human development indices. According to the third National Family Health Survey over 41 percent of Gujarati children under three years of age are underweight, which is worse than the national average. Over 55 percent of Gujarati women in the 15-45 age group are anaemic. According to Gujarat state officials, the WSJ said, Modi government "ramped up spending on rural health workers who distribute food supplements to the poor to $340 million in the year ending March 31, 2013, from $37 million in the year ended in March 2007, and are working on programs to track the health and nutrition of pregnant adolescents." WSJ: Gujarat’s malnutrition rates are persistently high. What are you doing to combat this? Modi: Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian state. And secondly, Gujarat is also a middle-class state. The middle-class is more beauty conscious than health conscious – that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they’ll have a fight. She’ll tell her mother, “I won’t drink milk. I’ll get fat.” We will try to get a drastic change in this. Gujarat is going to come up as a model in this also. I can’t make any big claims, because I don’t have a survey in front of me yet.

And the response from Secular media becomes Shame, Shame. Fv ckin Nonsense as always. Did TOILeters address rest of the interview? Of course not. That would harm their narrative. Besides, considering the anti Modi stance this Congress funded media has take over the last decade, a Modi supporter will scoff at every charge (no matter how legitimate it is).

Over 55 percent of Gujarati women in the 15-45 age group are anaemic. This is indeed surprising and the worthy part of discussion, not the quote/misquote. There are some serious flaws in the very important aspect of nutrition which has so many underweight individuals, its not just the usual poverty etc but maybe a lack of a proper balanced diet.

Congress sent its hounds (CBI) after him and dug up some financial irregularities charges. Secular media goes gaga chastising him that he is on weak grounds. First of all, are they really expecting a "Baba" to be cognizant of the financial dealings? But more importantly, does a person have to be a perfectly honest man to raise an issue about dis honesty an mal-governance? You are not going to find such a man in this day and age. So does one let the rot spread unabated? Similarly, no one is claiming Modi to be perfect. Considering the cesspool that is Indian Polity, You are not going to find a Abraham Lincoln. Your only hope is to get someone incharge that will do the least damage. Modi fits that bill. He is best (or least worst) administrator this country has to offer. And if after 50 years of Gandhi dynasty people aren't tired of the corruption, lack of infrastructure, 3rd world educational system, crime, communal tensions, no security policy etc, then Congress should get another 50 years. No one will feel sorry for their troubles. As they say, you reap what you sow. Edit: Considering the 10-11% agricultural growth rate (significantly higher than the national ~3%) that Gujarat has experienced under Modi, would anyone be surprised if over the next term problem of malnutrition is corrected?
