Indian Domestic Cricket Season 2012-2013: Players to keep an eye on

With a new batch of selectors to take over from Cheeka and Co, mostly poor decisions and poor planning living a path of unclear future and no new talent to take over from our ageing stars,8-0 loss being forgotten and no lessons learn't, India -NZ series will give a false feeling that all is well with Indian cricket which is entirely false. With Zaheer half the bowler he was 2 seasons back no backup or support bowlers to talk of,not enough bowlers who have talent being tried for in two years our bowling cup board is bare to say the least, our bowling right now except for Ashwin would be probably the worse among most test playing nations. Stubborn and stupid erratic selections by Dhoni in the playing 11 and selectors have left us searching for the next gen players to take over from the stalwarts, Rohit, Pujara, Rahane, should have been given a lot more chances in test's a year or two ago and now we don't have replacements, especially when we tour away from home in a year. Zaheer has served the country fantastically but now he seems to be a liability in the field, Ishant, Aaron, Umesh, Shami, Anwar Ahmed, Gony, Tyagi, Suyal, Sreesanth, VRV, have to be seriously looked at, in his present form Irfan is a better option and better bowler then Zaheer. We need seperate teams, captains for all three forms, Manish Pandey, Mandeep, Tiwary, rookie fast bowlers need to be quickly tested and whetted in ODI'S AND T20'S and if good enough find some good test bowlers and odi batters. My pool of bowlers and batters I will be keenly watching this season are VRV, Tyagi, Suyal, Anwar, Shami, Gony, Unmukt, Harmeet, Manish Pandey, Mandeep, Surya Yadav, Rahul Sharma, Sreesanth, Bhuvnesh Kumar,Veer Pratap. What I am hoping for if we have to get better as a test team, New captain as not only his batting abroad but selections and defensive captain is hurting the team, we need a captain with a vision and Dhoni has none, selectors with plans and who can make the correct and bold decisions,we need a good left arm fast bowler as Zaheer to me is on his last leg , RP when in full flow can be one but he is worse then Sreesanth because of his fitness and in consistency, Suyal, Anwar Ahmed can be looked at, Shami needs to be picked up for test squad, he cannot be worse then Zaheer and Umesh the way theu are bowling currently, NZ have 23 year olds who bowled many time better then our experienced bowlers. We cannot afford to pick up players like VK, PK, Mithun, Raina's, Unadkats, Badrinath , Dinda for test's, let us pick up players who might be maybe raw but have some chance of being successful,Murali Vijay, Saha should be in our test squad along with Rohit, Irfan.

The test squad I wanna see by the end of this season Murali Vijay no denying his talent and ease with which he plays good bowlers, yes he has to work on discipline. Gambhir well he needs to re learn to play test innings. Rohit he could be as good as any one is test's, Rahane cannot deny his stats. Sehwag down the order. Virat he might go on to be among the worlds best batsmen this year with his talent and form. Pujara is calm and composed and will be a good test bat. Yuvraj hmm a punt. Unmukt lol maybe we have our next g8. Sachin of old only Irfan many times a btter batsmen then most people batting for India in test's against fast bowlers and fast wickets. Ashwin the only good bowler we have currently. Ojha R Sharma has the talent and could be our next Kumble. Aaron if fit. Ishant as we have invested enough in him and he could find form thsi season, also he is experienced and needs good guidance,he could be very successful in test's. Suyal/Anwar whoever has a good season. Shami might be the spark our bowling needs. VRV, TYAGI,Gony are three bowlers coming back from injury and if fully fit and whoever bowls well could be our more experienced bowler who can be prepared for test's. Saha as keeper this guy can keep a lot better then Dhoni and is a very good technically correct and talented batsmen and a fighter too.

Where is Umesh?:omg: No Yuvi in tests.There is Mandeep,Surya,Bist,Manoj & one of them should be selected.Plus they deserve more than Unmukt.No doubt in his talent but he should play more FC cricket & can be another Virat in 2-3 years time.

The likes of VRV and Gony are past their date...don't think the selectors will be looking at them especially VRV unless they do something extraordinary in FC in consecturive FC seasons. Tyagi is injured more times than he plays. He had potential but too injury prone...needs to string together some strong performances to be considered again.

Umesh looked completely out of sync, no doubt he is very promising but needs to play county or domestic for a season, work out his bowling plan, he is either bowling half volleys or really short also with important tours coming up next year he should be told to do exactly what is required, work with Dawes and play some county or domestic cricket, Awana yes definitely worth a look in odi's.

The manner in which Kris Srikkanth and his co-selectors dispensed with their last official selection left a lot to desire. You can never ask questions off them. Well you can ask them, they will never be answered. Especially since the BCCI itself acts as a spoilt brat who refuses to accept responsibility for his actions. The ICC World Twenty20 matters only for an instant. As much as the IPL is the dominant league in the world, Twenty20 cricket as a whole doesn't have that standing on an international scale just yet. It doesn't really matter where India ranks in the top Twenty20 playing nations, for the odd match here and there will never reflect the proper strength of any side. Moreover, it doesn't allow for proper planning or team development either. The only advantage these few Twenty20 matches on any home or away tour grant is TRP gain and cash inflow. If India doesn't win in Sri Lanka, questions will be asked, as always. There is already suspicion over the selection of L Balaji, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh. Are they in on performance or experience or just for good luck as might be in Chawla's case, we will never know. However, the intensity of probing will increase around skipper MS Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher that much. In two years, they will have nothing to show for and the latter might be on thin ice, if not the skipper. And that, ahead of an important winter of Test cricket, is not a comforting thought. But this is about the selectors, particularly the incoming ones. We don't know yet who they might be. Such is the Indian board's inconsistency that Mohinder Amarnath, having been 'groomed' for the chief selector job for a year, might find himself without a chair when the music stops. And the new name in the ring is that of Roger Binny, though still not a surety. However, the bottom line here being that it doesn't matter who the five wise men are revealed to be. It's what they do, eventually. The problem with India's Test performances today is that they will now be rated on unequal terms. Eight straight overseas defeats have done that damage and it will be telling for a long time to come. Each time the team wins at home, people will only wonder how the players will perform abroad. Beating teams like New Zealand will only add to this conjecture. A small example would be the varying degree of indifference to the performances of Cheteshwara Pujara and R Ashwin in the first Test inHyderabad. With England and Australia coming, it will quite possibly enter the boundaries of hyperbole. If you take the New Zealand series as an exhibit, the task in front of the new selectors is definitely cut out. India have won the series 2-0 but there are glaring deficiencies that cannot go overlooked. Mostly they pertain to batting, although bowling cannot be overlooked. Ishant Sharma is back from injury, but hasn't bowled a ball in anger. There is no back-up for the spin bowlers. Harbhajan is a long way off from a Test comeback. Umesh Yadav is not ready to be the spearhead yet and it will be a miracle if Zaheer Khan goes the entire winter without breaking down. The summation of this is singularly representative of the fact that India's bowling cupboard is bare. This is perhaps the new selection committee's biggest challenge and in that light, the team's next foreign tour isn't that far off. Meanwhile, at home the team will scrape though on its batting on friendly tracks, like it did in the 2011 World Cup where India triumphed with a second-rate bowling attack. But that is no reason to be joyous. Even one defeat to either England or Australia will be reason enough for world cricket to mock the Indian establishment. And without enough runs on the board, it is a distinct possibility. Pujara may have settled in but New Zealand have found a small chink in his armour. He is a compulsive hooker/puller and doesn't roll his wrists enough to keep the ball down. Rest assured, both the future visiting teams will already have noticed it. India's No. 6, Suresh Raina, is afflicted with the same problem. The opening pair is a bigger puzzle though. In 12 innings, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag have put up fifty runs only once. They looked good whilst doing so in Bangalore, not so good when they both fell shortly thereafter - Sehwag in his usual berserk manner and Gambhir with his habit of jabbing at the ball. They have to put their hand up and be counted if the batting has to click otherwise Ajinkya Rahane has been waiting too long for a chance. Gambhir especially has been going through a bad patch. Yes, the implication being that you have to take hard decisions, not only at the level of team management but higher up. The new selection panel cannot auto-select 15 players and delegate all responsibility to Dhoni and team think-tank. Whether Binny leads them or someone else, the selection panel needs to be pragmatic. Talk to the players, talk to the captain, talk to the coach, talk to the Board about what needs to be done. And, if need be - that is, if he (a mighty if!) continues to get bowled in haphazard manner and not score runs - even talk to Sachin Tendulkar about his future plans. Indian cricket has scraped through without a concrete plan for too long. Enough is enough. When they come into power, the new selection panel - instead of taking the easier short-term approach - ought to have a specific target in their mind. South Africa next December is an easy one
