Forever Indian Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 These are the Average and Strike Rate of Ishant, Zak and Praveen Kumar in Tests. Ishant - 37.87(Avg) and 66.4(SR) Zaheer - 32.06(Avg) and 58.6(SR) Praveen - 25.81(Avg) and 59.6(SR) Clearly Praveen has been performing very well (even better than Zak in terms of Average) and he was our best bowler in England and then got injured. Now that he has come back from injury, I don't know why he is off the selector's radar and Ishant is back again. We all know that Praveen can be a real asset overseas as he can swing the ball prodigiously both ways. Also he can be a good bowler in India as suggested by his First Class stats. Also he is a very handy bat and can improve in that department as well. I see no point in giving another series after 45 tests to Ishant. One cannot remain as a prospective talent for 45 tests without graduating to the next level. What do you guys think?
Cricketics Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 My favorite Indian bowler from last 3 years. Never used. He can bowl in any condition on flat tracks and stuff. He doesn't get tired. Can bowl long spells like a spinner too. I don't know how the jokers keep dropping him from the squad.
maniac Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 As much as I detest PK's bowling....I beleive he has been unfairly dumped.....The guy should have walked into the squad based on his last few performaces at the test level...
Tendulkar_Bhai Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 In ODI's last 2 yrs his average is 50+ but in tests he has been good, however when playing 2 spinners you need at least some pace with either Ishant/Yadav the 4th bowler.
Forever Indian Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 He has played just 6 tests of which 3 were in the England tour and he was the best Indian bowler there. I am sure that if Zak, Praveen and Umesh would have been there in that tour, we wouldnt have suffered a 4-0 drubbing with 3 Innings defeats. We have been carrying Ishant in the team all that while without him showing any impact.

If we want to develop a good bolwer for overseas, I don't see that in Ishant unless he can prove me wrong by taking wickets in Ranji matches or county cricket. I think a stint in County cricket should do him good, but as of now he is occupying somebody else's place. I would even consider Sreesanth ahead of Ishant. Atleast Sreesanth can can run through a side on his day (tour of South Africa and other performances though inconsistent).

Cricketics Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 but he is a spinner' date=' isn't he ? :dontknow:[/quote'] I don't term him pacer or spinner. He's a unique bowler. You can say he won't lead the attack like Zaheer, but he will surely be a great support bowler in test who wiould chip in with couple of wickets and will bowl lot of overs to and won't get tired bowling just 5 overs in a spell.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 i would pick him just for his batting. really fun to watch
CG Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 P.k is not considered for home tests due to known reasons .He was injured for the australian test tour ans In odis he has been hammered in all continents for last 2 years and in dc he has been nothing special so he has not taken his oppurtunities. His bowling has gone down even his pace has gone down.
The Outsider Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Because he is not phhaashht like unlucky Ishant.
rkt.india Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Venkat Ananth @venkatananth Praveen Kumar injured too. Will miss UP's game vs Maharashtra next week. Mohammad Kaif is uncertain too after being hit by Ishant v Delhi. He too is more injured than fit nowadays, heading towards RP's fate looks like.
saneindian Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Has lost his swing to an extent and with the control as well. Needs to play a number of FC matches before coming back to the side. Ishant too should not be the 3rd seamer. That spot should ideally go to someone who is doing well in domestic cricket say someone like Dinda or Pankaj Singh.
youngindia Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Ishant - 37.87(Avg) and 66.4(SR) Zaheer - 32.06(Avg) and 58.6(SR) Praveen - 25.81(Avg) and 59.6(SR) 1. have you heard of having a reliable sample size?i should be asking a fourth grader this. 2. The development stages of players in question differ. Ishant averaging 37 does not mean it is the highest level he may attain. hestill has time to evolve intoa better bowler. pk will struggle to average below 34 in tests. . for a sample guideline, look at previous indian pacers (apart from kapil srinath and zaheer ) In terms of vision, logically indian cricket ,going forward, should be looking for pacers better than even kapil! But since even that is proving elusive, atleast srinath or zaheer is a decent objective. i really can't see praveen matching zaheer.i really do not understand what is going to be achieved with sub 130 bowlers who will struggle to average below 35. it shows zero vision to ask for players who will struggle to match venkatesh p. Minimum requirement wouldbe around 130+.not everyone above 130 is a success. but theyshud be given a go. pk does possess some talent for internationals (unlike nohoper vinay). but he does not fit into the vision for india to be more competitive in bowling vs SA and AUS in tests.

Agreed. I know that PK started off with 130 K+ and then dropped to 120-125 K probably cos of injuries or maybe he wanted to concentrate more on swing. If he can get his pace up to that 130 again then well and good, he will become a more potent bowler. But even without the speed he is a far better bet than useless Ishant. Don't know how many more chances we are going to give him. Unless Ishant can correct his length of bowling nothing is going to change and for that he needs to go back to FC cricket as he cannot experiment in International cricket.
Sidhoni Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Agreed with OP. He will do a much better job than "unlucky" Ishant.

Pankaj Singh or some other good prospect should be the 3rd seamer instead of the tried and tested bowler.
King Tendulkar Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I rate Praveen. But I would have him as 4th seamer behind those picked already. In fact we have imo 5 bowlers competing in pace dept for tests. Zak Yadav Ishant Praveen Aaron

Dinda is just not good enough for highest level from what I have seen. Too small and too slow.
