ravishingravi Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Are you supposed to sit duck when an other country attacks you? Pls see the chronology of events. This was entirely provoked by Israel and timing the conflict quite conveniently after US elections and before Israeli elections.
ravishingravi Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Yea, you deny them water, food, gasoline, keep them as slaves in a small strip of land with no prospects and you expect them to shower flower garlands. Hamas is no angel, but IMO Israel isn't helping the situation at all with their settlements and iron-handedness. I am also disappointed in the US, which shells out billions of aid to Israel every year, yet has zero control over what happens there. Cornell called Obama a republican president with black face. I quite agree ith that.

Am not supporting Israel here but what's with everyone putting the blame on them? Look at both sides of the story. Aren't Hamas hiding behind human shield? Pointless war this. At this age, these sort of war can be sorted out with few meetings which I assume Israel isn't ready for.

Yea OK but on the larger issue: - Hamas makes no distinction but civilians and combatants. Since everyone in Israel has to complete mandatory service in the armed forces, EVERYONE is fair game. - Israel targets combatants in which civilians are killed by collateral damage.

Sachin=GOD Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 I don't know much about this conflict but now I want to read something about it - can anyone suggest a good book on the topic.
EnterTheVoid Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 I don't know much about this conflict but now I want to read something about it - can anyone suggest a good book on the topic. The conflict explained, in simple English; - After Hitler's genocide of Jews in WW2, jews started looking for a country they could call their own (till that point, they were dispersed all over the world). - Zionism was a political ideology that tried to establish a jewish homeland in Palestine on the basis of that area once being the biblical homeland of the jews. - The British decided to split Palestine into two separate states, Israel for the Jews and the remainder for the Palestinians. - The Palestinian Muslims feared they would be ethnically cleansed from their homeland as more and more jews from Europe came to settle in Palestine. - Over the years, the area that was allocated to the Palestinians decreased as Israel built settlements for jews and jews only on arab land. - The Palestinians claimed Israel planned to take over all of the land and leave them nowhere to go. An Islamist organisation was elected in one area (Gaza strip) whilst a pro Israeli puppet was put in power in another area (West Bank). - Because the Islamist government took hold of the Gaza strip, Israel feared they would smuggle guns/rockets from other militant countries in the region and use them against Israeli civilians - As a response, the initiated land, sea and air blockades that controlled what came in/came out of the Gaza strip - The Islamist organisation claimed that due to the blockade, there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza; They use rocket attacks to fight oppression, Israel than uses those rocket attacks as justification for the ongoing blockade.
EnterTheVoid Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Bomb goes off in a bus in Tel-Aviv. 20 ppl injured. Uh oh, back to the suicide attack days of the second intifada. This has the potential to break into an all out war.

Thanks for the primer. The origins of the story sounds a India-Pakistan with Kashmir in the middle east!
EnterTheVoid Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Thanks for the primer. The origins of the story sounds a India-Pakistan with Kashmir in the middle east! They (Pak) say India is sympathetic to Israel as the oppression of Palestinians is analogous to India's *supposed* oppression of Kashmiris.
Sooda Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Thanks for the primer. The origins of the story sounds a India-Pakistan with Kashmir in the middle east! The common f.ack.tor being the fact that both were ruled by the British. No coincidence... I have been wondering why Hamas would launch these rockets into Southern Israel- theyre nuts but not idiots- and would know that the American Weaponry that Israel get would smash Gaza into rubble. For all the talk that Hamas can not live side by side with Israel and that they refuse Israels right to exist there have been extended and relatively successful periods of ceasfire- in practice Hamas would settle for the two state solution. Also the idea that somehow they were suddenly emboldened by a lreatively large stockpile of rockets and the muslim brotherhood being in power. Anyway the answer lies here http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/nov/20/palestinians-have-right-defend-themselves In fact, an examination of the sequence of events over the last month shows that Israel played the decisive role in the military escalation: from its attack on a Khartoum arms factory reportedly supplying arms to Hamas and the killing of 15 Palestinian fighters in late October, to the shooting of a mentally disabled Palestinian in early November, the killing of a 13 year-old in an Israeli incursion and, crucially, the assassination of the Hamas commander Ahmed Jabari last Wednesday during negotiations over a temporary truce. Israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, had plenty of motivation to unleash a new round of bloodletting. There was the imminence of Israeli elections (military attacks on the Palestinians are par for the course before Israeli polls); the need to test Egypt's new Muslim Brotherhood president, Mohamed Morsi, and pressure Hamas to bring other Palestinian guerrilla groups to heel; and the chance to destroy missile caches before any confrontation with Iran, and test Israel's new Iron Dome anti-missile system. ... to portray Israel as some kind of victim with every right to "defend itself" from attack from "outside its borders" is a grotesque inversion of reality. Israel has after all been in illegal occupation of both the West Bank and Gaza, where most of the population are the families of refugees who were driven out of what is now Israel in 1948, for the past 45 years. Despite Israel's withdrawal of settlements and bases in 2005, the Gaza Strip remains occupied, both effectively and legally – and is recognised as such by the UN. Israel is in control of Gaza's land and sea borders, territorial waters and natural resources, airspace, power supply and telecommunications. It has blockaded the strip since Hamas took over in 2006-7, preventing the movement of people, materials, and food supplies in and out of the territory – even calculating the 2,279 calories per person that would keep Gazans on an exemplary "diet". And it continues to invade the strip at will.
EnterTheVoid Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 ^ I don't think suicide bombings/rocket attacks are the answer; They just give Israel more impetus to pound Gaza. I think Palestinians could do with a Gandhi/Nelson Mandela like figure.

EnterTheVoid Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 ^ Yea but rocket attacks/suicide bombings haven't worked either! What choice do they have? They could use more of people of this type: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Said
Sooda Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 No of course it wont, sadly Hamas are not totally in control of Gaza and thats where their fault lies. Even if they do maintain peace, or try to, Islamic Jihad and the likes do keep firing rockets over, Hamas turn a blind eye knowing that these guys are popular with the people

Israel on the other hand says - "Hey! I don't care about Hamas or any other organization we do not want rockets to be fired on our side. It's your problem to control them." Phew! Anyone remember Taliban? The more I think about it the more it seems like Indo-Pak (with escalated weapons). :nervous:
