But one gotta understand that just 10 years ago, India and Indians were lot conservative.. Just in these last 10 years, PART of India jumped 20-25 years of progress/modernity. These Gurus and Politicians are still living in 70s-80s world and their views are from that era. If you ask your grandpa or grandma.. they will say the same thing.. If a girl in early 20s go out the door in mini skirt just see what her grandpa/grandma say to her. Why would they say no cuz they fear for the worst.. In other words, they mean that these clothing style will attract wrong-do'ers. Dont jump on me for saying this.. but I understand why so many people are saying 'skirt' is the problem. Couple of years back I said India is dividing into two.. one with 'India rising' and another with 'Old India'.. and these two India will collide again n again. Quite true. And yet it is not only Old India pitted against New India. It is also New India pitted against New India. There is a certain tendency, not you, to show how far New India has come along. Not true. For example, a common sight in Delhi NCR area (probably holds true for other metros too), is that a modern family travelling in a car looks like this - husband and wife in the front, two kids in the back and a maid servant (generally a teen and slightly older lady). The maid is pretty much responsible for taking care of the kids at home, and when the family travels outside. If you wanna see how she is treated wait till the family goes to a Haldiram and the dinner order is given. There is a good chance the maid gets to order the absolute cheapest thing on the menu, and dont be surprised if the wifey (and yes it is generally the wife who does this) waves her husband saying "Dont worry, wo mere plate se khaa legi". There are lot of areas to improve for India, even New India today.

Just in morning I observed that 2 out of top 3 private banks in India are run by females - ICICI Bank and Axis bank, if you include HSBC's Naina Kidwai that makes it 3 among top banks. This is in total contrast of my perception of US Banking industry which I believed to be highly male dominated. Quick google search has confirmed my perception. Compare this with the scene in Indian north belt which is accussed of being most patriachal, each state has had a very strong female chief minister in each one of these states, barring Bihar, within last 10 years itself - MP (Uma Bharti), UP (Mayawati), Bengal (Mamta Banerjee), Rajasthan (Vasundhara Raje) and Delhi of course (Shiela Dixit). More impotantly I admire the fact that these female rose through the ranks instead of being wives or daughters of some powerful male politician (that's why I kept Rabri Devi out and for same reason I don't take Hillary Clinton as a symbol of female empowerment in US) I admit having females at top positions doesn't make females on street any safer but at the same time physically safer atmoshphere for females doesn't really mean that overall society atmoshphere is condusive for real empowerment of women. Different societies and cultures look at female empowerment differently. It is a mistake when people equate overall conservatism or liberalism (which is in general equally applicable to both male and female population) with female empowerment. Now, I am ready to be branded as regressive for defending India and Indian society in relative comparison of western societies :P

That is a perfectly legitimate question to ask - What has Indian woman done with the rights already granted to them. There is no reason why that question should be deemed as sexist. Like everything else, if there has been a change in policy it should also be revisited to rationalize the results. It can not, and should not, be open ended. For example, it is often mentioned how Bollywood is a male dominated industry and rarely makes woman oriented movies, and yet if you see most of the woman oriented movies (right from Mother India to Mandi) they have been made by male directors. There are a lot of talented female directors but they tend to not make as many female activism movies. Look at Ekta Kapoor. Nobody made more money thanks to the cable revolution in India. And yet she kept churning out cr@p like Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, Pavitra Rishta, kasauti zindagi ki etc. Is it too much to let her make some half decent female oriented soaps that maybe closer to reality than a large family with woman laden with gold and marrying 3 times :giggle:
