The start of EnglandÃÔ tour to India was marked by a debating storm over the Indian selectors decision to deny England practice against spin bowling and quality opposition. After a 1-2 series loss in the Tests against England and a One-Day International series loss against Pakistan that has every chance of turning into a clean sweep, there were few selectoral googlies for EnglandÃÔ warm-up matches before their own ODI series against India. The India A squad chosen for EnglandÃÔ first warm-up match at the Palam Cricket Ground in the Air Force Sports Complex in New Delhi on Sunday (January 6) was picked keeping two things broadly in mind: that several players would be unavailable due to the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals being played, and that the best of the lot who were available would be picked. Three of the members Abhinav Mukund, the captain, M Vijay and S Sreesanth have international experience, and several of the others have lit up the Ranji league phase with their individual performances. Among the younger prospects who have caught observers eyes are Ishwar Pandey and Mohit Sharma, the new ball bowlers, and Parvez Rassol, the all-rounder. Pandey, 23, who saw Madhya Pradesh finish just short of a quarterfinal berth, was the leading wicket-taker in the Ranji league phase with 48 scalps at 21.06. Mohit, 24, was not far behind, taking 37 wickets at 23.24 for Haryana. Rassol, 23, set several imaginations alight with his story as much as his performance, being the first cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to be picked for an Indian side that will play an international team; He topped both batting and bowling charts for Jammu & Kashmir. All three were only briefly part of India AÃÔ training session on the eve of the first warm-up match, leaving Palam to train with the Indian team at the Feroze Shah Kotla. While India A take on England, India will be playing the third ODI against Pakistan, and given the problems the national team has had against PakistanÃÔ bowlers, all three were called up to give the batsmen additional practice. Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, said that this would help the bowlers too, and categorically stated that both Pandey and Mohit were sure to play against England. Ūt was planned that they would leave early, said Rajput. ŵhe selectors called me yesterday and said they would like to have a look at these boys. ItÃÔ always good for them also to bowl at the Indian batsmen too. The move was undoubtedly a good one for the young trio, but it did mean that India A will go into the match without a proper nets session with the whole team. Several members hadnÃÕ made it to the training session on Friday, with flights delayed due to the fog in Delhi. Rajput explained that this was why the whole squad made the journey to Palam first before some of the members left for the Kotla. Ÿe also needed to see them, so they came here first, he said. Å´ome of those guys hadnÃÕ arrived on time yesterday or played. ItÃÔ always better to come together as a team for a while before a match. The Indian selectors will be picking the team for the ODI series against England on the night of Sunday, giving the India A men extra motivation to do well. Ordinarily, a single performance would not have been enough to merit national selection, but because the Indian team is at a low phase and the fact that the players in India A have had good domestic seasons, a good show in the first match might just be the tipping point to pitchfork them into the national squad. My 11- Abhinav Mukund, Murali Vijay, Jalaj Saxena, Paras Dogra, Kedar Jadhav, Rohit Motwani, Rishi Dhawan, Pervez Rasool, Ishwar Pandey, Sreesanth, Mohit Sharma Bist and Darekar miss out Jadhav, Dhawan, Rasool, Ishwar and Mohit must be given their chance.

He wasn't alone. Ian Chappell was so madly in love with Sunil Joshi. I lost count of the number of times he said that Joshi "was a very good flight bowler". Maninder Singh was obviously stoned when he called Murali Kartik as the best spinner he had seen in his life. :facepalm: Pras loved Sarandeep Singh and said funny **** about him.

Murali Vijay's scores in ODIs he has played so far - 25, 11, 14, 21, 15, 29, 33, 30, 1, 16, 1. Average 17.8 and many of those games are against Zimbabwe, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Yet selectors think he is a prospect for ODI national side. :facepalm:
