How Ashwin got right and Harbhajan struggled??

tÃÔ not often that you get an opportunity to see two similar kinds of spinners operating in tandem, for rarely a team fields two leg-spinners or two off-spinners in the playing XI. India did that with Harbhajan and Ashwin in the first Test at Chennai, both bowling parallel on a turning pitch against a batting line-up that wasnÃÕ too proficient against the turning ball. While it was only logical to assume that the senior pro Harbhajan Singh, playing his 100th Test match would steal a march on his junior, it didnÃÕ pan out that way, for Ashwin remained miles ahead. What did Ashwin do right and where did Harbhajan miss out would make for an interesting study. Bowling slow ThereÃÔ always a temptation to bowl quicker on turning pitches but if bowling quick doesnÃÕ come naturally, it backfires, for one tends to compromise on the technique. ThatÃÔ what was visible during the first Test match where Ashwin bowled a lot slower and hence extracted more off the surface. Bowling slower also meant a bit more flight and that allowed the ball to grip the surface, extracting more bounce. On the contrary, Harbhajan chose to bowl a lot quicker and flatter, which resulted in the lack of bite. The problem with bowling fast is that it leads to under-cutting the ball, which results in the ball skidding through the surface instead of gripping it. Looking for spin Ashwin, in the past, has been guilty of trying too many variations too often. Just because he possessed weapons in his armory, he felt obliged to display all of them, at times in the same over. But here, he resisted the temptation of bowling different variations and stuck to bowling regular off-spinners instead. If the normal off-spin is causing enough trouble, there isnÃÕ a need to do more. ThatÃÔ where Harbhajan has lagged behind, not just in this Test match but also in the last couple of years, for his off-spinners arenÃÕ turning as much as they used to earlier. Whether it has something to do with the over-exposure to T20 cricket or over-reliance on ÃÃ…oosra and ÃÕop-spinners is something only Harbhajan can and must figure out. Length All great spinners tell you that the moment the batsman starts playing a spinner on the back-foot, the bowler is rendered useless. A spinnerÃÔ deception lies in throwing the ball up in the air, taking it above the batsmanÃÔ eye-line and drawing him forward. AshwinÃÔ length in the first Test match was a lot fuller than HarbhajanÃÔ and hence produced the desired results. Ashwin drew the batsman forward and induced mistakes. On the contrary, HarbhajanÃÔ length was a little shorter and thus allowed the batsmen to stay on the back-foot. One Test match doesnÃÕ make Ashwin a better bowler than Harbhajan, for the senior pro has done it over a decade. Yet, it gives clear indications about HarbhajanÃÔ current form, which is a genuine concern.

Rahane is not a regular opener. He should play at Number 6. Making him play as a specialist opener will mess up his career. Dhawan could be given a chance but I dont think he will do much better.
Keeping him on bench for more matches will mess up his career EVEN MORE than playing him as an opener.

http://www.rediff.com/cricket/slide-show/slide-show-1-will-keep-batting-at-no-6-till-jadeja-gets-used-to-test-cricket-dhoni/20130226.htm#4 Jadeja has his test spot fixed for next 3 tests, hopefully not for the away series outside SC though.
Actually, Jadeja's brand of spin bowling is more suited to conditions outside SC. Due to his quick-ish action and batting skills, he can be a valuable option outside India.

Add one more factor. Working hard! Ashwin from all reports went away after the English series and worked with his coach to rectify issues with his bowling. And from what I've heard, Harbhajan and work-ethic have rarely been used in the same sentence in a positive manner.
Spot on! :agree:

I don't even understand how Harbhajan made it back into the squad. In domestic cricket, he did absolutely nothing of note. Even domestic batsmen easily negotiated him and even scored heavily off his bowling. He also was very opportune and falsely claimed he was injured at one time after team for Australia tour was announced.

Arthur says twin-spin attack ideal http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/arthur-says-twinspin-attack-ideal-20130227-2f4le.html

Australia coach Mickey Arthur says ideally he'd like to have left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty and right-arm spinner Nathan Lyon in the side to take on India in Saturday's second Test. But it's not as easy as all that, given the importance of team balance and not overloading the lineup with five specialist bowlers which would weaken the batting. One solution following Tuesday's eight-wicket defeat in the first Test in Chennai would be to drop one of Australia's three pacemen and use seam-bowling allrounder Moises Henriques to support the other two quicks and the two spinners. However the hiding Lyon received from India's batsmen makes one wonder if two spinners would receive double the punishment in Hyderabad this weekend. Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar and offspinner Graeme Swann claimed 37 wickets in England's 2-1 series win in India in December. Arthur says England's ploy was to use Panesar early and turn to the offspinner late in the match. "Ideally you want both, and I did a lot of looking at the England series and they used Panesar a lot," coach/selector Arthur says. "But when the wickets start breaking up, your offspinner to the right-handers becomes dangerous because you've got to keep playing him all the time. "Ideally, it would be nice to have the pigeon pair." Australia were bowled out for 380 and 241 by India's spinners on Chennai's crumbling red-clay pitch. The home side lost two wickets on Tuesday's fifth day of play as they chased down a target of 50 to win. Lyon took 3-215 and 1-29. In contrast to India's three-pronged spin attack led by Ravi Ashwin (12 wickets), paceman James Pattinson (six) led Australia's bowling efforts in a lineup that included three specialist quicks, a seam-bowling allrounder and one spinner. "That's going to be the million-dollar question. It's easy in hindsight having a look at how the wicket ended up," Arthur said. "You probably would have liked two spinners on there. However our quicks took most wickets (eight to pace and four to spin). "We didn't get a massive return from spin in this game. "Looking at the way it ended up probably two spinners (would have worked better). But our quicks were the most likely out there, so I am not sure which way really. "It will be interesting to see how he (Lyon) pulls up after this Test match," Arthur added. "Only he knows how he will approach things if he plays in the next Test match and how that is going to go." Captain and selector Michael Clarke says Doherty, who played two Tests in 2010, bowled well in the warm-up game against India A earlier this month when the left-armer claimed 3-108.
