It's a monumental achievemant, it's only ever been done twice in so many thousands of games. Which goes to show have massive it was. But Kumble as a bowler, was given far too much respect, he was made out to be more special that he actually was and this was because of the tripe that was bowling from the other end for his entire career. An average of just under 30 is not bad, but it's not the "great" record others speak of. I think he was also the type of bowler who riled opposition batsmen, great for India when they were bowling on a 5th day to win a test. Personally, I didn't like his bowling style. but often an effective one.

Spinners tend to average higher than fast bowlers in general. From the 60s and 70s onward only Warne and Murali have had a significantly better average than around 30. Well Underwood does, but he played quite a few matches on uncovered wickets.

I don't know why we're speaking of overall records here! Saeed Anwar's 194 was a very special innings and a one off until Coventry outscored him! That doesn't necessarily make Saeed Anwar a great batsman nor does it place him in top 5 of his generation!

That plays a part, but in Kumble's case it does not hold because apart from Warne and Murali who are all time greats and contenders for an all time world XI, no other spinner has averaged significantly better than 30 on covered wickets. Now if you argue that Warne and Murali have been the only great spinners in the last 40-50 years that's a different matter. Similarly, in the case of Kapil his first 250 or so wickets came at an average of 26-27 which is superb given the lack of support and the kind of tracks he bowled on. He lost a lot of sting in his bowling after his knee surgery but for his first 60 tests or so he was a genuine world class bowler. Any team would jump at the prospect of having that kind of a bowler for 60 tests, except the West Indies in the 80s.

IIRC, it was a 2 test series, Pakistan won in Chennai marginally by 16 runs and India comprehensively won in Delhi courtesy a great spell by Anil...
