The disclosure by Channel 4 has triggered brouhaha over the alleged brutality, with many pro-Tamil groups condemning the killing. The pictures showed Balachandran in a military bunker. According to the channel, the snaps, taken ÅÉours before the boyÃÔ death during the closing stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in May 2009, will feature in a sequel to a 2012 documentary film that ÅÔhowed Balachandran lying dead on the ground with five gunshot wounds on his chest. The pictures, published on Tuesday in a national daily, portrays a definitive sense of innocence, hope and expectation in Balachandran, hours before he fell prey to the Lankan army. The article titled Ŭilling of a Young Boy by Callum Macrae in ŵhe Hindu quoted the director of the documentary saying that ÅÕhe three pictures of PrabahakaranÃÔ son were taken by the same camera and indicate he was killed in custody. If anything, the pictures seem to reinforce allegations of sudden disappearances, summary executions and killing of innocent civilians by the Sri Lankan Army during the final stages of the civil war, raising the spectre of ÅØar crimes against the Mahinda Rajapakse government. The Sri Lankan government strongly denied such killings and termed the expose as a ploy to Ã…Ã…iscredit the army ahead of a UNHRC meeting in Geneva. The Rajapakse government had claimed that PrabhakaranÃÔ family was killed during the fighting. Previous exposes by Channel 4 had also been rejected by Sri Lanka as ÅÇake. Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister G L Peris recently said there was Ã…Ão consistency whatsoever and commitment to principle on the part of the UN Human Rights Council in adverting to the US resolution passed against Sri Lanka last year. RajapakseÃÔ recent visit to both Bodh Gaya in Bihar and the Sri Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati had triggered widespread protests by political parties in Tamil Nadu. Ÿhy was he visiting a temple here when his government was razing temples in Tamil areas in Sri Lanka, they had questioned. Almost all political parties in Tamil NaduÃÂ¥MK, MDMK, PMK and VCK denounced the Rajapakse regime. ŵhis is yet another proof that Rajapakse is guilty of war crimes and should be made to stand before the International Court of Law, said DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan in a statement here. Needless to say his opinion was less compassionate. His question was where was this outrage for the Kashmiri Pandits ( Indians ) who have been slaughtered and displaced from their homes.

Ram Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 This news has been doing the rounds for a while. Nevertheless, it still produces the same chilling sensation everytime. It is quite clear that the boy was captured and killed using a military style execution in cold blood. It seems like war and conflict force men who are otherwise humane and decent to do grotesque things.

It almost feels like the Indian govt. and the Lankan govt. got into a clandestine agreement where we pretty much let the Lankan govt. do whatever they want towards the end of the armed conflict. I am guessing their argument went something along the lines of - 'Look, you have to let our military have a free reign. We have these guys by the jugular. We can either go for the kill now and end the LTTE as we know it (or) be sensitive to humanitarian consideration and tone down our military operations, which may give the LTTE enough time to flee, re-organize and mount further attacks in the future. Option A will probably result in the death several 1000 LTTE fighters and a few 1000 innocent civilians, but at least we can put an end to the conflict and at least start the long road towards rebuilding. Option 2 may not guarantee an end to the conflict, we may still see an ongoing insurgency that continues kill innocent civilians, drains our resources and hurts our economy and prevents our collective population from reaching prosperity' We probably weighed the two hypotheticasl against each other and told those guys to have a free reign. This is sad because it shows the primacy (or the lack of it) placed on human rights by the Indian govt. They obviously could not care less about civilians in a foreign country. If this is their attitude towards the right of life for non-citizens, then you can be sure their yardstick cannot be that much different for Indians as well. Just for the record, as much as It is grotesque to see innocent civilians killed anywhere, my heart does not weep too much for the plight of Tamil people in Lanka (even though I am from T.N). Bottom line is - They may be Tamil, but they are not Indian. I worry about Indians first, does not matter which language, color, caste, creed they are part of. Everyone else comes later.

I am not aware of too many details of the operation, can you elaborate on the role of the Indian government? As far as I know hasn't India pretty much washed it's hands off the entire thing over the last 15-20 years or so.

Outside the military sphere, we could have put a lot of pressure on the Lankan govt to tone their operations towards the end to limit civilian casualties, but we did not.
