vvvslaxman
His batting stance will make him suspect on seaming pitches Just compare with current crop of openers around the world. Who doesn't have suspect technique on seaming pitches against new ball. Gayle? Smith? Cook.. COok is a big pokemon. It is the temperament that seperates good opener from a bad one. Compared to lot of players he has solid technique. Only problem is consistent conversion. Link to comment

I'm not saying he's a bad opener but there are technical issues that he can rectify to make his game more solid. They way his bat goes up in the air initially is a bit worrying Link to comment
rkt.india
Limited shots? No way. He can flick' date=' cut, pull, drive, square drive ., lofted drive, sweep shot on drive. Parthiv patel is the example of having limited shots. Not Vijay. His execution is very simple. All in straight line with upright stance. So it might not look like he has wide range of shots.[/quote'] They int come naturally to him apart from flick. You need a good footwork to play most of the shots and if will try to play them with his limited footwork, he wont survive long. Even domestic, he was never known for strokeplay but someone who digs in and play long. Link to comment

They way his bat goes up in the air initially is a bit worrying It's not just about having perfect technique it's more about playing in way which suits ur technique best and that is what he is doing .. Pujara is another example who if tried to play like some one else outside of his ability will fail very badly but he knows what suits him and defensively he is secure Link to comment

His feet movement is much better than Laxman who doesn't come fully forward . Tell me which stroke he is not comfortable with. From what i have seen he plays almost every shot all around the wicket. Yes his strength is through on side much like Kohli. But he has great off side play that is required for an opener. Link to comment

moniker
The only shots that I haven't seen him play are the pull and the hook, but he manages to let the short balls go pretty well. Link to comment

His footwork is optimum. He doesn't have the exaggerated feet movement like Yuvraj. Doesn't mean he has bad footwork. He uses it just enough to meet the ball under his eye. Link to comment

He still plays away from the body, but he has curbed this by not going for too many shots and the reason he has been successful recently. Link to comment
CoverDrive
The way he left balls was great to see. Its something Indian batting has missed since the seniors were past it. Kohli, ChePu and Rahane have to learn in this aspect, they sometimes play/defend a lot of balls outside off which can be easily left.. Kohli's dismissal was just  A nothing ball short outside off and he chased it Kohli and Pujara left the ball very well in SA. Early in the innings everyone is suspect. Link to comment
Vilander
He was not out, very poor decision.. Link to comment

M Vijay has taken it as a profession :cantstop: like Dravid. That is why he is able to spend more time. His only issue was he gave it away after starts. Hope he makes use of this form. Straight Drive
Good innings. At least one specialist batsman is in form very early in the series. Dhoni too seems to be in form. Time for others to spend time at crease in second innings. Link to comment

When Cook was in form England was doing well. Same with Smith now Warner for Australia. Openers play vital role in setting the tone for the rest of the players. Link to comment
