saneindian Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Was reading this article about the recent meeting of domestic captains with Kumble and board officials. Found this part interesting DRS for Ranji? No way While the BCCI is averse to having DRS in international matches, there were suggestions that the system be in place at the domestic level. Srinivasan, the chief antagonist of the system allowing players to refer on-field umpires decisions to third umpire, explained the BCCIÃÔ stand, questioning the efficacy of the technology. He revealed that the board has gone by the word of S Venkataraghavan, a former ICC Elite panel umpire, who, apparently, has studied the system thoroughly. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/59/2013030620130306073229281152624a3/Mind-the-gap.html Did some further web searches to find further connection of Srini and Venkat on the DRS and came across this Former ICC Elite Panel umpire, Srinivas Venkataraghavan has backed BCCIÃÔ stand against the use of Umpire Decision Review System(UDRS) and said that technology should be one hundred percent foolproof. "I am against the DRS. When you desire technology you want to make certain that you don't leave any uncertainty. It's got to be one hundred per cent foolproof," Venkataraghavan said. "Whatever is the stand of the BCCI is also my stand," he added. Venkataraghavan, who is the director of the BCCI umpires sub-committee, is not satisfied with the ball tracking technology like BCCI. "You can see the fallout of the ball tracking technology in the recent World Cup. If you have seen the World Cup matches you would yourself know. I don't have to say anything," he said. http://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/news/item/174785-venkataraghavan-against-drs Venkat also accompanied Srini to Australia during last Ashes to check accuracy of the technology and wasn't satisfied. And the line of arugment about technology being foolproof has been parroted by both Srini and Dhoni as well. Wasn't aware of the role Venkat has played in this stubborn refusal to accept DRS in any form. So far I always wondered how Srini could be so sure on such cricketing matters, now I know why. Message for the companies engaged with DRS, win over Venkat and you will see a sudden acceptance for the DRS.
Trichromatic Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 What does he think about the catches which are referred to third umpires?
Sachin=GOD Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Can Sachin's name be cleared now? Can this be sent to foreign media that BCCI is not following DRS on the advice of S Venkataraghavan' date=' not Tendulkar![/quote'] Of course not - Venkatraghvan might be following his advise in secret
Crookbond Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Can Sachin's name be cleared now? Can this be sent to foreign media that BCCI is not following DRS on the advice of S Venkataraghavan' date=' not Tendulkar![/quote'] I think his name is already "cleared".
The Outsider Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Can Sachin's name be cleared now? Can this be sent to foreign media that BCCI is not following DRS on the advice of S Venkataraghavan' date=' not Tendulkar![/quote'] Where does it say that BCCI is not following DRS only because of Venkat. Tendulkar and Dhoni have also opposed it's use for years now.
G_B_ Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 hmm So was Venkat, that influential under Shashank Manohar?
cricketpitch Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Venkat was India's last best umpire and one of the best in the Elite panel during his time. Please give him some respect. The fact that he is coming from a particular state or city should not be held against him. He was asked and he has given his opinion. If BCCI wants to take it then it is not Venkat's fault.

Chandan Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Didn't read even one quote by BCCI official saying that they are not following DRS because Sachin or Dhoni advised them to.
The Outsider Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Here they've admitted it. Anywhere they've taken Sachin or Dhoni's name? Tendulkar is on record saying he does not want DRS without Snicko and Hot Spot. Snicko is not possible at all and Hot Spot is also limited due to the number of cameras.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 If we're waiting for a "100% accurate" system we may as well ive up. Nothing, I repeat no system you implement will ever be 100% accurate. Maybe folks should use some common sense and go with a system which is the best at the momnt and helps reduce the no. of incorrect decisions and howlers. Instead of focusing on "snicko" or "hot spot" etc. go with the simplest system of all - have the 3rd umpire let the on-field umpires know in case of an incorrect decision by looking at replays. If enough evidence s there to over-rule the decision, over-rule it esle stick with the on-field decision. Intent of the DRS system was never to over-rule line decisions but eliminate howlers which can easily be done by using regular replays without all the gizmos.
asterix Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Dhobi can't stand the embarrassment of him getting most of his DRS decisions wrong. He feels pretty strongly that his brand value will reduce if he's seen as a stupid captain (which he is generally). Hence his foster father Srini and his foster uncle, Venkat got this issue sorted for him.

Where does it say that BCCI does not follow DRS because Sachin has told/advised them to?
yoda Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 So? Even Kallis doesn't like DRS. Where does it say that BCCI does not follow DRS because Sachin has told/advised them to? Doesn't matter. He opposes it for the same stupid reason the BCCI doesn't want to use it. So he is as dumb as the BCCI for opposing it, whether he is the sole reason or not. What are you trying to absolve Tendulkar of here? He surely hasn't helped the cause of bringing DRS into play. Ok, so he isn't THE reason for the BCCI opposing it. No one said he was THE reason in the first place. We all knew that Dhoni was not favor of it, now we learn that Venkat had recommended against it. So what? Doesn't change anything regarding Sachin.
The Outsider Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 So? Even Kallis doesn't like DRS. Where does it say that BCCI does not follow DRS because Sachin has told/advised them to? It will be naive to think that the views of Tendulkar and Dhoni on DRS has had no impact on the decision of the BCCI not to use it.
saneindian Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 For the England tour we did agree for a watered down version of DRS. So the players and even the board was partially convinced. It was in the ICC meeting after the England tour that BCCI flatly refused to support DRS and thats when both Srini and Venkat went to Aus during the Ashes to see the DRS working. It was around the same time Dhoni came with the life jacket analogy similar to the technology to be 100% correct line given by Venkat. Dhoni hasn't talked about it publicly since then. The only comments we have heard on DRS has been from BCCI (Srini).
