The Outsider Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 122 average' date=' striking at 114 in World Cup Finals.... Let's not forget about Mahela as a great ODI batsman[/quote'] If that comment is meant towards me, I am considering WC final as a tie breaker between Richards and Tendulkar because the contest is too close to call. Mahela would not even qualify based on his overall record.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I thought the thread was about "Test Sachin" Vs "Odi Sachin" and "Odi Sachin" wins the round. How did others enter the fray :hmmm: Between if I had to pick a batsman to play an innings if my life depended on it in a one-off match, I would pick Bradman for Tests and Dhoni followed by Bevan/Richards/Glichrist in odis.

You nailed it when it comes to ODI's though for many Dhoni is out of bounds and is actually underrated in many ways. MSD is special in ODI's without a doubt.

The Outsider Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I would disagree. Richards, yes but Dhoni and Gilchrist are not at the same league as Tendulkar.
Number Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Average player massively overhyped , if he fails in the next test Sangakkara will be rated ahead of him.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I would disagree. Richards' date=' yes but Dhoni and Gilchrist are not at the same league as Tendulkar.[/quote'] Fair enough but based on what I've seen when the stakes are high likes of Dhoni, Bevan & Gilchrist always upped their games. Gilchrist may have a poor average but somehow always played a good knock in big matches, just like Richards. As for Dhoni & Bevan, when they get in you know they will get the job done more often than not.

You certainly cannot expect an opening batsman to finish games off on a regular basis. Gilchrist and Jayasuriya have more visibility because of their role in the side - to give an explosive start - anything else is a bonus as reflected in their averages. Tendulkar has a role similar to m Waugh - score briskly keeping wickets intact.
Lord Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Bevan upped game wen stakes are high?Cant remember any of his innings in WC knockouts

Actually when chips are down all the players you listed are better bets than Tendulkar, backed with facts. I have seen Gilly many a time just change the course of the game with in the few overs of the start of an innings that would invariably put the opponent out of the game (in a line up that had Ponting, Hayden, Bevan, Symo etc no less), a parallel only matched by Viv in the annals of the one day game. Amazing!!

Hussey is another one whom I always wantd to see the back of whenever India played Aus. As I mentioned earlier this is my perception/opinion. I would take Tendulkar ahead of anyone else for say a 7 match series as he will invariably put up big numbers. But if it's a one-off "winner takes it all" I would go ahead with Bradman in Tests and Dhoni/Bevan/Richards/Gilchrist in odis.

Amazing!![/quote'] Sachin has single handedly won many games for India in ODIs. He was actually the only reason why India won anything in 90s and people used to switch the tv off once Sachin got out and opposition used to celebrate like they had won the match once they got him out. The difference is Bevan, Dhoni etc are finishers and Sachin is an opening batsman. While you may think Bevan or Dhoni have won games, what they usually do is finish the game while a batsman like Sachin does bulk of his work at the start of his innings. Its very rare that an opener bats till the 50th over to finish the game. Its similar to what happened in WC Final where Gambhir played the important innings when Sachin, Sehwag got out and attacked SL and scored at a good run rate but everyone rates Dhoni's innings as the better knock because he got the side home. His innings was still a great knock but everyone forgets Gambhir's innings which was just as crucial.

In Tests Bradman is an easy pick.

In fact the MOM should have been shared and both Gambhir & Dhoni should have split the award. What hurt Gambhir was that he got out while Dhoni didn't else Gambhir would have been an easy pick to be the MOM. Also, most Indian fans rate Gambhir highly for showing up in tough situations as he was our highest scorer in both the T20 Cup final as well as the WC 2011 final.
harmuk Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 LOL @NareshK for the usual rhetoric of people switiching off TV's part once SRT is dismissed in the 90's. Did you pick it up from Cricinfo?
The Outsider Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Very true as that's my perception and I expect other people's opinions to differ. Hussey is another one whom I always wantd to see the back of whenever India played Aus. Well the argument is that setting up a chase and total should be the protocol for an opening batsman in ODIs and Tendulkar has done it very successfully. Sure he was helped by Sehwag's blistering knocks at 100+ SR like Gilchrist did for Australia. But even never in his prime was Gilchrist considered the most dangerous Australian batsman - Ponting was though he played a position lower than Tendulkar.
BeautifulGame Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Bevan upped game wen stakes are high?Cant remember any of his innings in WC knockouts 1996 Semi vs WI when he along with Law recovered Aus from 16 - 4 (i Think) 1999 Super six vs SA which was a virtual tie breaker (Excellent partnership with Waugh) and then again top scored in the semi final against SA Only time he actually failed in a knock out world cup match was in 2003 wc vs Sri Lanka. Remained not out in 1996 and 99 finals and was not needed in 2003 final(Not his fault).
