Pujara, Dhawan, Vijay- which of the three should be the ODI opener?

As pointed out by many' date=' the only thing that will keep Pujara away from the ODI side is his knee problem else he is probably going to make his debut in the CT.[/quote'] Will get one and half months rest from now. Can do some work on the knee.

Easier said than done. RCB and the IPL (read BCCI) would love to encash Pujara's rising stardom and any such request from him would be not allowed unless there is a medical report from the team physio. Everytime CHintu is playing an IPL match, I will be praying for him not to do any damage to his knees.

Not so sure. Let's see what happens when the IPL starts. He'll surely want to play though.

Dhawan is a sure to be tried at ODI level. I would still want Gambir to play in ODIs. Pujara, I believe should be reserved only for tests. Vijay, I believe can play the ODI game but knowing him, it will be difficult for him to change his mode of batting from one form of the game to another and hence should be kept away from LOIs.

^ Yes Im worried that the IPL will set him back to the 'airy drives outside offstump' Vijay of old. Dhawan should open he has always been a good List A player in domestics, Pujara at 3. Kohli, MSD, Raina, Jadeja...
very much

Dhawan & Pujara are the front runners. Vijay's game is not suited to shorter formats at intl level. His game is built on patience and he doesn't have too many strokes and that's why he perishes early going for that ugly hoick over deep mid wkt.

Do you watch IPL?? He gets big scores and does well with field restrictions. Can be a success in the power play overs at the start of the innings. And I do believe he has the technique to succeed overseas too, so if selected can do wonders. Or he may fail, but definitely not a hit and miss player.

Vijay has arc between widish long on to deep square leg as his "big shot" zone. He can hit 6s against IPL bowlers in that area by hoicking against the line but not at an intl level, not consistently in any case. Every time Vijay is under pressure to score quickly he goes for that swipe in that arc as that's his "pressure releasing" scoring shot. That's the reason he averages a poor 18 after nearly 15 games at intl level. In Tests Vijay doesn't have to rely on the shot. He can bide his time and wait for lose deliveries to score. Likes of Pujara, Kohli, Dhawan etc. have more shots and take less risks while trying to score fast which is what you need to do at intl level.

Actually, watch some of his innings in IPL. He has a wide range of shots. Some of his cover drives and on drives are just great to watch. He plays that mid wicket hoick once too often and he can cut down on that shot if its proving too risky. For me, whoever does well in tests can also do well in ODIs, provided they have good shots and can rotate the strike.

But at intl level he doesn't get those friendly half volleys on off for him to cover drive and that's why he has to go for his across the line swipe to score. In Tests he can bide his time for his scoring shots but in shorter formats he doesn't have the same luxury. He wil do well against lesser attacks but against better bowling attacks he won't have a scoring zone and will need to rely on that hoick.

Pujara is a fantastic batsmen and should open in Odi too or come one down, Dhawan and RAyudu should come in MUrali needs to concentrate on tests for now,Irfan needs to come in too along with Shami and no place for Ishant

In the test series, he has played shots all around the ground and its way tougher to score runs in tests than in ODIs. ODIs are basically played on flat tracks where bowlers are defensive and field placements are defensive. He just has to be lot more selective in shot making.
