G_B_ Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 In the T20 match v Mumbai it took Johnson three balls to work Raina over. Raina kept hopping on his feet expecting a bouncer and was caught out badly when the ball was angling in at the stumps. This was on a pitch with a something in it for the seamers. Not even an out and out green belt. Traditionally pitches in England do seam and swing quite a bit in May and June (i should know as i have played grade school cricket in england) before it flattens out (rain permitting) in July August Sept. Now Raina does have a decent ODI average in England. But this was playing a bilateral series in September on flattish pitches. If he can be worked out in 3 balls by Johnson, what hope does he have against the likes of Steyn Morkel (or even that Pakistani bowlers) of scoring even at 6? Raina has been fantastic for India in the subcontinent. no questions about it. I fear we will become a walking wicket in England. Thus he should not be picked. 200 internationals is enough time for him to have corrected his flaws. What are your thoughts?

He was decent in England during the ODIs. read the first post that series was played in september. Huge difference in England between June and September. When India played the T20 world cup in England in June 2009 he flopped badly.

You wont get a ready made Dravid and Sachin from our first class circuit.

Have you actually been to england to experience the swing in conditions through the course of the English spring/summer?

You wont get a ready made Dravid and Sachin from our first class circuit. not in england. Both the 1999 odi world cup and the t20 2009 were mostly bowler friendly. Both played in May-June In england the pitches dont matter much. Its the overcast conditions and weather which does matter. You can prepare the flattest pitch in the world but if the conditions overhead are overcast that means the ball will swing through the air. May and June are always the hardest in the english season due to a constant flux between high and low pressure. Before the summer fully arrives in July August September.

Exactly the time when a number 6 batsman might be at the crease.....So he will probably be better off batting at number 4 and assume that the top 3 can see off the new ball. secondly i do believe the number of bouncers per over have also increased in the LOI.

The question itself doesn't make any sense. If you are basing this on a single ball in IPL or what he did in T20 in 2009, then why not ask for the team itself to be withdrawn from the tourney? As for going to England, are you assuming a few things?
JourneyMan Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I support the idea of adapting the team to the conditions. The main issue is that (obviously) most Indian players are better in familiar subcontinental conditions than in places like SA/England/Australia. Whether Raina plays or not may depend more on the competition than on his own performance. He clearly has issues (not only technical, but also mental) with the short ball. It comes down to seeing if there are better batsmen for such conditions available.
