this is the guy who got most wickets with intimidation and took maximum use of batsmen in 1970s without any protective gear. As batsman started wearing more and more protective gear his intimidation and efficiency reduced.He was all about pace and nothing much else unlike Lillee who was a master.

He was the quickest.... quicker than both lee and akhtar... His random ball in a test match was clocked at 160.45 kph in a test match and it is still among the fastest balls ever...even to this day while these days, every single is clocked and still no other ball at 160 kph in a test has been recorded since. he might have clocked at 165 kph or more...

What I read on net is in that competition they measured speeds after the ball traveled 18 yards and not from split second after the release .Thompson bowl too many full tosses in that competition so he was measured quickest.I think there are several different methods in measuring speeds .

I dont think Thomson was 37 or even 35 in 1979 and he clocked 147, so probability of him being quicker than Lee and Akhtar is very low. Because 161K (100 mph) is a barrier considered as human limit in fast bowling and people claiming to be bowling quicker than that is ridiculous. In an era of better training, diet, technique, bowlers have not breached that limit yet. Thomson bowling over 161K is very much like Ben Johnson having the fastest 100 meter time than Bolt. Other thing is that, Thommo when he was not at this best clocked at 147 and Imran and Holding were about at peak and still clocked 6-8 kph slower than Thommo which suggests that they both were not really slower than what people think of them to be.

he suffered a serious shoulder injury due to his tragic collision with greg chappel while taking a catch.... After that he lost his express pace and venomous bounce.. Most of the players who have ssen thommo still consider him the fastest of the lot including viv.. u cant deny the fact that he was clocked in only two matches and in both matches he clocked over 160.45 kph... No other bowler jas done that.... These days, spped guns check every single ball and still there's no other ball over 160 kph in a test match.... and i am not even considering his team mates' views; most of whom think that he might have touched 180 kph those days... U never really know about human limit... Once it was thought that no human would be able to break 10 second barrier for 100 m.... and now it stands at 9.5 sec..... It jst keep on getting better and better..

He had a debilitating shoulder injury and at that time, the methods of recovery were not as good as today. Just look at the footage from 1974 - 1976 and see how Marsh catches the ball. I do not recollect any of the other keepers exerting to catch the ball like that. His slinging action was purely from the shoulder and when it is gone, it is gone! Yes I think he was QUICK!!! When the 70-80s WI fast bowlers say he was quick, they know what they are talking about. Regarding Holding and Imran, yes they were fast but not express, maybe 85 - 90+ mph. A lot of bowlers have bowled at the same speed in the 90s and 2000s but they did not have the guile of these bowlers. Unless you are lighting fast like Thommo, you cannot have your way unless you mix it with seam and swing. But you have subtle movement with consistency, you do not even have to much speed. Ask Mcgrath, one of the best pace bowlers of all time. That 1979 video you are talking about is not the best way to judge a bowler's speed. They did not have that much time to warm up and it was hot as hell. You have to be pumped up and be in the rhythm of the game to bowl quick.

Oh BTW, now the radar guns measure the speed from the point of release. In the 70s when they did these tests, it was after it pitched. Huge difference. Apparently the pitch can slow the ball by 8 - 15%. So Thommo could have bowled frequently at speeds of 100 mph or more....
