How good was Abdur Qadir?

I have never seen this guy play, but some people seem to make him ATG. , but his away average is almost 48. WHat was so special about this guy?

He never was great big spinner of the ball like Shane Warne but had very good googly and Flipper. He just bamboozled England which was needed in those days to get notoriety.

Did very well against West Indies as well and was one of the major factors why Pakistan were perhaps the only side in the 80s to compete with West Indies. No other team in the world had a top class spin bowler at the time, specially wrist spin.

He was ok ok bowler who bamboozled English and West Indians mostly. But then even Hirwani bamboozled them. Realistically he was a bowler ,a lone leg spinner bowler in those days and thats why he is considered ATG by neighbors only.

I vaguely remember him bowling in 87. Not sure how Gower played him, who was the best English player of spin in the 80s. He normally picked spinners pretty well, as did Gooch,.

Lubo averaged 112 in the series in 1984. Was too young to watch cricket in that era, but I remember him scoring 157* against the Indians in 1990. Don't think Hirwani caused him too many problems in that game.

Gower's 157 came off both Hirwani and Kumble who played at the Oval. Gower mastered Qadir in the 1984 series in Pakistan where he knocked up 58, 74, 152, 173*. (Off the top of my head, may be wrong by couple of runs). And then Gatting completely dominated him in 1987. Still the rest of the Englishmen were clueless in 1982 and 1987.

Kumble played in the 2nd test but not at the Oval. I saw Gower live in 92 at Old Trafford when he scored 73 against Waqar and Wasim. Even at 35, well past his peak, he was a marvellous player to watch. I presume Mushtaq played in that game although I can't remember Gower facing him, just the odd shot off the two Ws. From what I remember he often played the spinners off the back foot. Picked up the length incredibly early and would hammer anything remotely short.

twww, Nice memory there :) I'm surprised why they didnt play Kumble at Oval, although 3 spinners would be too much there. That would have made no difference given the fact that this was almost like the 'runniest' English summer in a century, with the controversy over the Duke/Reader balls. I pretty much persuaded Robelinda to upload a lot of Gower innings but forgot that 73. Did you watch it at the stadium? He crossed Boycott's 8114 during that innings if i remmeber correct.

Yeah I remember Kumble making his debut in 1990. Sticks in the memory, unusual to see two leggies playing in England. That England side was one of the better ones at playing spin. Atherton, Gooch and Gower were all pretty good- which is why Gower was left at home and Atherton didn''t play much in 92-93...... Yes indeed, first test match I ever saw live. Odd how things stick in the memory- Ian Salisbury scored a 50 I think. Lets bot mention his bowling though..... fair to say it set the tone for the rest of his career.
