He played purely as a batsman and is preferred ahead Yagnik as a batsman. Yagnik is an experienced cricketer. He played last match as WK and did very well in both aspects. At 18, he is going to be perfect but he can always improve if he lacks something. FYI, Dishant Yagnik is a better Wk than even Dhoni, might be best WK in India, but it does not mean he will play ahead of Dhoni in Indian team and Samson certainly is a better batsman than Yagnik. Even ABDV was Wk in his early days but rarely kept for SA until now and played as specialist batsman. For the moment lets consider batting as more important parameter to a wicket keeping batsman's selection. Following wicket keepers have scored more runs than Samson this Ranji season. (1)Gautham: 9 innings, 943 runs, Avg 118 (2)Parthiv: 13 inn, 895 runs , Avg 69 (3)Dinesh Karthik: 11 inn, 577 runs, Avg 64 (4)Tare:17 inn, 842 runs, Avg 66 (5)Uday Kaul: 15 inn, 652 runs, Avg 65 (6)Arun Karthik: 7 inn, 361 runs, Avg 60 (7)Ubarhande: 6 inn, 304 runs, Avg 51 (8)Saha: 15 inn, 558 runs, Avg 47 (9)Rawat: 12 inn , 501 runs, Avg 46 (10)Samson: 10 inn, 377 runs, Avg 42 So there is a long list of more deserving prospects and he is far behind in the pecking order even if batting is given more weightage while selecting a wicket keeper batsman.Although he is a prospect as every cricketer is, it is going to take few years for him to merit selection above others.

Lets see if he will break into the India A team or Challengers trophy team or the zonal team of Deodhar.

He was once a 19th year old boy and scored a hundred at IPL in SA. Everyone though he was the real thing and wanted him instantly in Indian National squad. Yet, today he is basically nowhere to be seen. (Pune bench) Let's not start to be too overly optimistic. One more thing that India needs to do is if it gives any youngsters a chance, it has to be for the playing XI not the squad.

He can play some textbook, so develop on it. no county team is going to sign him because county season starts couple of weeks before IPL, if he plays IPL then he would be missing first 8-10 weeks of the season plus BCCI doesn't allow indian players to play in foreign t20 leagues so a county team would not sign a player who would miss first 2 months of the season because of IPL and also not play in their domestic t20 tournament

Agree with this but he should be in odi team regardless of that as he is obviously too good for domestic tournament in that format Should carry on playing ranji on side when our team plays test or is resting like pujara does when we play limited over cricket
flamy Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I'm backing this guy to make it big. I like what I see. Whoever was comparing him to Pandey needs to look closer at the way Sanju plays. He is at a different octave. Now, just need to see how he does in foreign conditions. I like what I see so far.

shortbread Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I hope BCCI dont let Samson fall by the wayside, rather than a wait and watch approach the board needs to be proactive in managing the development of such prospects. He is very matured in the way he approaches his innings and shoulders his responsibility well. He's also grounded compared to the previous Kerala superstar to play for India. Over the next few years its highly likely that Dhoni will announce his retirement. For all his shortcomings he is by far the best keeper/batsman India has had. Lets not go back to the period where we kept replacing keepers every 5-6 months!! Karthik who covers during Dhoni's absence is a bloody tool and the only positive he has is that he comes from Sreenivasan's state!! High time they start thinking of an alternative Dhoni replacement.
express bowling Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Samson has not looked bad. I have not seen him much, so won't comment with any certainty... but he did not look like a natural puller. While that is not a huge problem it definitely puts a batsman at a disadvantage while playing quicks.
