root is a fantastic player and he was never really out of form. even in his "low" days, he was scoring 50s for fun. and now he's converting them to 100s for fun. I expect to see him score daddy 100s for fun too. Smith is Smith, they will never be anyone like him. Although Williamson has the better technique, I personally would now rate root higher than any one else barring smith.

Until he does well in Australia he will never be the best like Smith. But he is a clear number 2. What a player he is though. 

Kohli even at his peak is no where near this guy. Not even close.

Root by the end will end up as clear no 1.  Smith is struggling big time to his standards...  Still better than Kolli Kane though.

that assumes root can sustain his form for several years and that smith continues to struggle. right now, the gap between them in avg is still around 8 (used to be over 10 at one point).
