Dhoni - Greatest Indian captain

Dhnoi is a great LOI captain, coz he has players who are very good LOI players... Am not sure of his strategies, but I am glad he is our Captain and that we have him at No. 5/6... he is gun of a player there... As for the test matches, he does not have bowlers who can take 20 wickets overseas and his batsman did not put up 300 in Eng and Aus for him to draw the series.... You might as well have had Ganguly leading us in Eng and Aus with not much of a difference in results... Having said that I dont think Dhoni himself is a good player at no. 6 in tests when the 2nd new ball is around, he looks like a walking wicket to me.....

imran? his record was a joke outside SC in tests
One or two overseas test wins and the WC win was very lucky... Rain helped him in the England tie but he gave the mighty WI a real scare

Did we loose any tournament after 2007 wc ?
The year after 2007 WC was not a good one for India .. We won marginally against Pakistan, We drew against SAF in India and then lost test series in Australia.
Dhoni is clearly the best limited overs captain we've had. Ganguly, in my time is clearly the best Test format captain ( people older than me say Pataudi or Wadekar were the best but I've not seen them). As for Ganguly not being a matchwinner...:haha::haha::haha: For most of his career (read: prior to 2005 or so) he was toe-to-toe with Goddy for being our go-to batsman, matchwinner and one of the top 5 ODI bats of the decade. Man also had a golden arm, where he took key middle over wickets with his wobblers. IIRC, he is still the *only* opener in ODI cricket to've averaged 40+ against South Africa ( 50.50 actually). We don't have to sell Dada short to glorify Dhoni. IMO, Dhoni is a better manager of a younger team but Ganguly was slightly better in managing the titans of the team (who come with titanic sized egos) and IMO, was a better tactician in the longer formats. Dhoni has a better 'nose' for the occasion in limited over cricket and frequently pulls rabbits out of his hat.

under ganguly we became competitive in world cricket, started reaching finals ,dhoni took us a step further by winning the finals..it all starts from the basics and the root.. in tests ganguly over dhoni for me,just cannot forget the humiliation we suffered

I think you are talking about Test matches. SA have always been competitive in India barring 2006 when they came as a young team. We won pretty comfortably against Pakistan, should've win 2-0 if not for Kumble's late declaration and Australian Test series - well, we all know how that went.

that was 2004 when saf lost the series 1-0 in india..2007 was a good year for india,we should have won that aus series, drew 1-1 vs saf2008,won 1-0 in england, beat pak at home.. we were competitive both home/away

I was just pointing out that the results were not so great after that win. I know the situations and who knows that such situations won't repeat this time too :idunno:

lol.. MSD is one of a kind in cricket history.. Hits extreme highs.. also extreme lows.. But at this moment his highs outweigh his lows clearly. Under Ganguly we lost like 9 finals in a row.. His team never hit the rock bottom like Dhoni's team did. Also his team never hit the highs that Dhoni's team hit. Which captain you would prefer? One who is only there or there about or one who can win the world or lose everything.. repeating the post here.

+1 For me 2003 WC Squad were far better team than 2011 squad, but the Aussies were almost invincible at that time.
Squad was good.. We had the bowling to exploit SA conditions. Infact we sat Kumble out. But our 5th bowling option was horrible then. Yuvraj was not that good with ball then. 7+4 squad.. with Dravid keeping. Kaif was the only one i would consider as a weak link.
