StriKe Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 He was a witness to the plight of people affected by the devastating flash flood in Uttarakhand and it is no wonder that cricketer Harbhajan Singh has decided to help the victims in his own small way. The India international will contribute Rs 10 lakh which will be utilised for the benefit of the victims of the tragedy. "I have decided to contribute Rs 10 lakh. A part of it will be donated to the c and the remaining part will go to the Punjab government's relief fund," Harbhajan told PTI today. India's rising star Shikhar Dhawan has already dedicated his Man-of-the-Series performance to the victims of Uttarakhand tragedy but Harbhajan is the first cricketer to come out and help the affected people. The off-spinner could empathise with the victims as he himself was stranded in Joshimath for a few days. Harbhajan and his family members were on their way to Hemkunth Sahib and were stuck at Joshimath after landslide badly damaged the road. The cricketer along with his friend and family then stayed at the ITBP camp, where he was moved by the selfless work of the Indian Army. The cricketer was touched by the stories he heard from the various families who were staying with him in the camp. Harbhajan and his friends were finally rescued from Hemkunth Sahib by 205 Army Aviation Squadron based at Pathankot. Source

Raghav_12 Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 He probably could have helped more by preferring to stay in that area for slightly longer and in process allowing some more needy person to be rescued ahead of him. His presence among stranded people may have led to more media focus on tragedy. Being a police officer he could also have coordinated some of the rescue operations.:giggle:

Being a police officer he could also have coordinated some of the rescue operations.:giggle: he did help while he was there: Harbhajan turns counsellor for stranded pilgrims, tourists Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who has been stranded in Joshimath, on Tuesday took the role of a counsellor alongside ITBP personnel as he met a number of pilgrims hit by incessant rains and floods. The cricketer is staying at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp at Joshimath since the last three days after he too could not reach Hemkund Sahib gurudwara due to inclement weather. The off-spinner accompanied ITBP officials to the forces' barracks and campuses on Tuesday where stranded pilgrims are being provided food and medicines and talked to them. "He counselled them (pilgrims and tourists) that all would be well soon and that force personnel and others are trying to bring as much succour as they can. He gave them food and water and spent with them," a senior ITBP official said. The ITBP has deployed close to 600 personnel for relief and rescue operations in the state and has opened up its office and residential buildings for the people to stay. "Our jawans have even emptied their barracks to accommodate the people who are stuck. Every effort is being made to provide food, water and medicines through two private choppers that have been pressed in by the force," the official said. The force has spread its men to rain-hit areas in Kedarnath, Gaurikund, Govindghat, Pandukeswar, Karnaprayag, Badrinath and Uttarkashi. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NorthIndiaRainFury2013/Harbhajan-turns-counsellor-for-stranded-pilgrims-tourists/Article1-1078472.aspx
