That was heart-breaking. There was great anticipation that India would finally win a test outside sub-continent in more than 10 years when they were set a target of 120 in 4th innings. But that was not to be. I was in tears :((

Raghav_12 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Take a look at the video... Pinch Hitting evolution in Cricket. - YouTube Now go to :45 and later 3:40 to see how Greatbatch attacked Ambrose. Ambrose's natural length was ideal for someone to hit him over 3rd man/point or ramp shot. In this day and age I am sure batsmen would have gone after him as well in T20s. I'm sure if Greatbatch could take him on, so could batsmen today. It's just that Ambrose played in a different era where fast bowlers were to be respected and new ball was to be seen off. Not so anymore. With power-plays, shorter boundaries, advent of T20s, shots like ramp shots, helicopter, scoops etc. it's a different ball game altogether. I am of the opinion that champions in one era will be champions in another era but at the same time not naive enough to believe that a bowler will be "unhittable" in T20 era. Was about to mention this match. I recall reading in a report of that match that after getting hit few times by Greatbatch, Ambrose walked upto him and confronted saying nobody dares to do that to me.
Crookbond Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I was watching that game - Walsh injured, Lara captain. Bishop and Franklyn Fecking Rose murdered us. Btw, I don't know if people remember - Abey Kuruvilla was given an extended bowl in the 3rd innings so that he could wake his 5 wicket haul. :wall: The 10th wicket partnership added 33 runs without which the target would have been 87 runs. Tendulkar was so upset after this game that he scolded all the kids (Ganguly, Dravid ) that if they don't perform he would send them packing back to India. :hysterical:

Would love to see the complete video of that incident as I've heard about it but never seen it other than highlights which doesn't have all the details. Point is if Greatbatch could do that against Ambrose, more abd better players than Greatbatch would have done it in this era on smaller grounds and on batting friendly pitches. Just because nobody tried that against Ambrose doesn't mean he would have been unhittable in today's T20 era.

This, when you've got to win a Test match at hand? Total chu-giri if you ask me. ^Als the ODI series I think had the infamous Noel Who?Incident with SRT YES Sidhu was not out in both the innings i think. Rose bowled huge noballs. Also i think Bishop got rid of Tendu of a noball in the first innings . You are right but that in no way removes that Kuruvilla incident out of my mind. Even Sidhu agreed to it once on NDTV. Wisden Almanack Tendulkar was near his assertive best as he and Dravid built a commanding position by adding 170. Punishing short and wide bowling and taking advantage of attacking fields, Tendulkar unleashed his full repetoire to score a hooked six off Rose and 14 fours. It took Campbell's leaping catch at gully to dismiss him, for 92, off what television suggested was a no-ball by Bishop
Muloghonto Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Apparently Ambrose lost it big time after Greatbatch charged him and hit him for 6 over point/3rd man region. Just because nobody tried that against Ambrose doesn't mean he would have been unhittable in today's T20 era. Err thats like saying since someone as crappy as Kaluwithrana can belt Pollock and McGrath around, others of greater capability must be able to do it too. Reality is, these bowlers very rarely went for much runs. Doesnt mean some aggressive guy didnt go hammer and tongs on them for an over or two once or twice in their careers. Just like every great batsman has been dismissed by part time dibbly dobbly bowlers, every great bowler has been carted around by some mediocre batsman/tailender at some point in their careers. FYI Greatbach against Ambrose was literally a one-off fluke. Trouble with trying to bash around super-stingy bowlers like Ambrose, Walsh, McGrath,Pollock, deVilliers, etc. is that it almost always works out as '2-3 fours and then out' for the batsman. We've seen that many times. I find it really hard to believe that the stingiest bowler of the 1990s by a fair margin would've gotten carted around in T20 league. Particularly when the only way you can even begin to think of bashing bowlers like Ambrose is to have really strong backfoot play and that is the one aspect where T20 batsmen are distinctly inferior to their predecessors.
Crookbond Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 U_G and Muloghonto - I think there is a difference in definition of "unhittable" between you two.
Muloghonto Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 U_G and Muloghonto - I think there is a difference in definition of "unhittable" between you two. Perhaps. Any bowler who has career RPO of under 4 in ODIs and under 6 in T20 is in the 'unhittable category for me'. I don't mean Ambrose would consistently get 4-3-4-0 in T20 over his career, i think he would more or less be in the 4-0-18/20-0 kinda figures over his career if he played T20s and that would be pretty realistic IMO. It should be noted that McGrath's career RPO in T20s was 6.7 and that too, at the tail end of his career. If McGrath at the end of his career can touch almost run-a-ball RPO, then Ambrose, who was more accurate than McGrath with more bounce could've gotten under run-a-ball RPO if he'd played T20s through his heydeys.
vvvslaxman Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Modern day best ER in T20 Mitch starc 4 overs 25 on an average Steyn 4 overs 25 Tsotsobe 4 overs 25 Riaz 4 overs 25 RP singh 4 overs 27 Morkel 4 overs 27 STeve Finn 4 overs 27 Bhuvan 4 overs 27 approximated all numbers .. It is not far off to expect Ambrose to come out with an average of 4 overs 24 runs or less.
Hafeez Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I think it was this match, may be our Pakistani friends can confirm: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65943.html Out of topic , in the same tournament what a match this was India Vs Pakistan, India lost by 4 runs http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/65945.html What a batting by Tendulkar against Akram, Imran, Waqar and team 38 balls 49 run :hatsoff: look at PAKVWI Match and Bowling of Aqib Javed did better than akram.imran.waqar most Under rated fast bowler ever and Aqib has 3 Five wicket haul VS India most by any Pakistan bowler respect
rkt.india Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 The bowlers who i think would be unhittable in the modern day T20 leagues would be Ambrose' date=' Walsh & Garner. Ie, all of them taller than 6'9 and all of them capable of bowling short of good length bouncers. When the ball is comming at you at 90mph , [/quote'] In fact, these three bowlers were never 90 mph bowlers. Nothing is unhittable in world cricket now other than a low trajectory perfect yorker by Malinga. Garner was 6'8" around Steven Finn and Tremlett's height, Ambrose and Walsh 6'6" around Stuart Broad's height. You are talking we did not have such tall bowlers after that. Steve Harmison 6'6" but far quicker than any of Garner, Walsh, or Ambrose. Tallest and the most difficult bowler to face today is Mohammad Irfan and he is quicker by any of those bowlers and even then he has been thrashed.
rkt.india Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 But Walsh & Ambrose had 3.4-3.6 economy IIRC and a big reason was that they got more bounce than Morkel gets off of good length & short of good length length' date= while having Akram-Pollock-esque control. Not sure about that. Morkel gets as much bounce as them and is quicker.
Muloghonto Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 In fact' date=' these three bowlers were never 90 mph bowlers. [/quote'] False. Again, word of a pro anyday over your sillyness. You are going to lecture *me* on trajectories, this after you claim to extrapolate distance from the wicket to wicketkeeper from 1980s video feeds ? Sorry, i dont have time for you. You pretend to claim a lot of BS based on your kid ideas on topics you are not competent on- such as who was doing what and how fast who were bowling in the 80s. Harmison quicker than Garner or Ambrose.:hysterical::hysterical: Kids these days *sigh* Garner, Ambrose, Walsh were all in the McGrath-esque league of accuracy. Ambrose was even more accurate. When you ally consistent 88-90mph bowling from towering giants who can land it 99 out of 100 times on any dime-sized piece of property on the pitch, you are on a different planet than these harmisons & Irfans.
Muloghonto Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Not sure about that. Morkel gets as much bounce as them and is quicker. Sorry, I've seen them both. Ambrose circa early-mid 90s got more bounce than Morkel does from fuller lengths.

Against australia, the match was truncated by several rain interruptions. Ultimately, Australia had only 4 ovs left in the 34th over when Waugh/Jones decided to go hammer and tongs. They collected 58 off 4 ovs from Marshall/Ambi. It was still only the 11th month for Ambi so you can see some pretty listless bowling here. Not bad for a 21 year old who only started cricket at 17. I first heard of Ambi in the series vs Pak in 1988 when he nabbed 4 wickets in his first 2 matches(or first 2 ODIs that series). I think he probably played for WI with Lara in the 1987 Junior World Cup. I first saw him on tv in the 1988 Champions Trophy final. Pak were chasing 235 and were coasting along at around 176 when he came back for his 2nd spell and promptly yorked out a dangerous Miandad for 76. I think he yorked 3 guys taking 4-29 that game. Anyway he was player of the series in the Australian tour with 31 test wickets overshadowing Marshall and Walsh. The 2nd one is the Hero Cup semifinal against SL. SL were 70-5 when De Silva and Kalpage got together, De Silva crawling for 30 off 61 balls. In the last 5 overs, he clubbed Ambi and co for 38 off 18 balls. I only remember one straight six, as I left the TV not expecting the assault. For what its worth, I think that was Shastri's first tournament as commentator on the TV I think. I watched Imran's assault on Garner in the 1985 Rothmans Cup. Imran hit 6s off the 1st, 2nd and 6th balls and took 22 I think. Still if you look around on Youtube, you might find a few Imran sixes of Windies pacemen, he was quite a tall guy and a very fine hitter, it is not surprising at all. An old image from my laptop

Yes. Ambrose was a great bowler, one of my all time favorite and have seen a lot of him but please stop exaggerating. He was no way 90 mph bowler. He still has lesser SR than McGrath. He was accurate and economical and mean but still not one of the best strike bowlers of all time. Even Brett Lee has a better SR than Ambrose. Since I said Harmison was quicker than Ambrose, you should not be surprised like that. Walsh, Ambrose were mainly 130s bowlers who used their accuracy and bounce to great effect. Ambrose was a bit quicker than Walsh though. I guess you have your own perceptions and fantasies.
