22 children die after eating midday meal in Chhapra, Bihar

The effect caused by traces of organophospate is not the same symptoms as reported in the news on the kids who died. Those symptoms indicate acute organic phosphorous poisoning and that can't happen with residual traces from insecticide containers. Some reports say that 2000 ampoules of atropine (the drug used to cure organophosphate poisoning) were used to treat the kids. This is nowhere accidental but very much intentional.

^ wow... I am speechless if that is true. Now real question is what benefit one gets out of poisoning poor kids. Say if that town feeds 50 kids. For each kid meal, they earn Rs5/day profit which brings it to Rs250 a day with 180-200 days in a school year, you are looking at approximately 50k/yr profit. So someone killed 20-30 kids for Rs. 50k?? Really? Alright, if there is no monitory angle to it, then what is the motive. How can it be proved?

I just do not see how just traces of phosphorous in insecticide containers can kill children - there needs to be higher doses. I think I am pretty confident about it. In this world, sometimes there may not even be a motive - you never know. Even if there's one - why would that be at Chhapra, Bihar is beyond my understanding. But, lets wait for further details to emerge and hope I am proven wrong.

Seems like a conspiracy - poor kids are sacrificed. Hope they get to the bottom of this. Anything is possible in India. Bihar is run by thekedaars - may be rival contractor hatched a plan to put down the one the contract was awarded to.

Will this lead to protests and media coverage, like in the delhi r*pe case? I don't think so, but i hope it does. We can't let this die down, just because it is not a middle class problem. The country needs to show we care for all our children.

38 children fall sick due to contaminated water in Mumbai Mumbai, July 18, 2013 DHNS: Thirty-eight children, including 14 girls, have been put under strict medical observation following severe gastroenteritis attack, displaying symptoms of acute diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, in an adivasi ashram at Tavkheda in the Dhule district of northern Maharashtra, over 350 km from Mumbai. The Tribal Development Commissionerate has ordered an enquiry into the incident and asked the district medical college to collect water sample of the borewell and supply tankers. A show-cause notice has also been issued to Kasturabai Adivasi Ashramshala at Tavkheda in Sindkheda taluka which runs classes from first to tenth standard. The incident came to light in the early hours of Wednesday. A team of seven doctors from Dhule District Health Hospital (DDHH) are camping at the spot, treating the children in makeshift wards at the ashram. Three children with severe symptoms were admitted to Dhule Civil Hospital, while seven others have been placed under observation at Government Health Centre in Nardana. Talking to Deccan Herald from Dhule, DDHH chief Arvind More said: “Initially, only 34 children displayed the symptoms, but on Thursday, three more children were placed under treatment after they complained of sickness. Samples of water as well as blood and stool of the children have been sent for tests. We can determine the cause only after the tests. Right now, it will be improper to come to any conclusion. However, preliminary enquiries point towards consumption of water as a probable cause. Going by the symptoms as well as the recovery of the children who are stable, we have ruled out cholera.†To a query whether the gastroenteritis attack could have been due to food poisoning, More, replying in the negative, pointed out that there “are 376 children in the ashram. If the symptoms were caused because of food consumption then all the children would have displayed the symptoms.†As a precautionary measure, the ashram authorities have stopped using the borewell water, as well as that supplied by the tankers.

I think the oil used in preparing food was adulterated.

Yes, mustard oil contamination is quite fatal. Only rare cases will result in death, since the mustard oil gives a foul smell and tastes bad if contaminated. It will be difficult to swallow for the children. BUT, such high quantity of organic phosphorous is causing me doubts. Even the insecticides and pesticides won't kill the children immedietly. It will cause a lot of symptoms before hand and they can be saved if rushed to hospital. P.S: If it rains after using fertilizers or pesticides in farm lands, some of them might drain into nearby wells. It will just cause illness if someone drinks it, and rarely fatal.

but then how such amount of organic phosphorus can be used in food? Two kids of the maid who cooked the food have also died in this, so it is sure that she too did not know about it.

I guess it should have been mixed in the cooking oil.

I think oil was adulterated from manufacturer's point.

yep, somehow it's not been given any attention. Is there any news that they enquire the oil manufacturer/supplier?

That is what I am also thinking about. I think it may not be the fault of the shopkeeper who supplied oil to the school if it was adulterated from manufacturer's point.

No one will mix a lubricating oil in cooking oil for profit. Usually the much cheaper argemone oil or rancid oil are used. These won't cause much harm as they have very less organo phosphorous and are hardly fatal. lubricating oil is too costly and it wont give any profit by adulterating it with mustard oil. I m thinking that it's mixed on purpose.

No, but the response to the delhi case was from middle class in urban areas. The media's core audience felt unsafe. How many villages erupted in protests? I will be happy to be proved wrong, but the protesters were up against a lack of safety in cities where they live(even though they did not explicitly spell it out). Our villages have always been unsafe, but not many people care.

The girl herself was from a very poor family who had migrated to Delhi from one of UP's villages. Its the media that usually doesnt cover the villages, but im pretty sure outrage for rapes is just as high there as in the urban areas. I mean, its something that strikes any human being's conscience because we all have daughters, mothers. sisters... this is just my opinion.

I did not see any news of protests from villages during the delhi case. I may be wrong. But i am mainly saying that protests by people in chappra might not have the same coverage and influence as the ones in delhi. I am saying the govt and media don't pay much attention to protests by such people. I am being cynical. Hopefully what you believe is true and some real action is taken in this case in chappra.
