arun81 Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 One would think merit alone would be single most deciding factor in getting a job...may be not in India The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is going to evaluate the contribution of weaker sections of the society in government, public sector undertakings, organised private sector and in the unorganised sector. In a recent move, the ministry has proposed to engage a consultant or a competent organisation for this purpose. It is also suggesting measures for enhancing their employability. "We floated the proposal in May this year and we have received over 30 applications from individuals and organisations. We are in a process of screening. We will hand over the task to the best individual or a organisation," said J.P. Dutt, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. "We assume that a considerable chunk of SCs work in the private sector where there is no reservation and they are employed on the basis of merit alone. We want to know the ground reality and ensure that private sectors also absorb more people from weaker sections so that they can be uplifted in the society," Dutt added. The proposal that Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Kumari Selja is going to implement stems from Meira Kumar's idea, the former minister of social justice and empowerment. Kumar believed that in a liberalised economy, affirmative action by industry, which includes reservation, must complement the public sector benefits for SC/ST. Kumar had constant dialogue with the corporate sector on the issue of affirmative action. The ministry will examine the minimum qualifications necessary for various posts in the government departments and public sector undertakings. "We would ask the firm assessing the details to suggest, wherever necessary, the relaxations in qualifications that may be sought for immediately enhancing the employment of SCs against these posts.
